Very cool. It sounds like what I was hoping Runewars would be.

Thanks for sharing all these pics and info. I know there is a lot that goes into it. Its very fun to look at.
Thanks TREX! It's become a passion/obsession. It's fun bringing unpainted minis to life and to have lots of different terrain available to help bring a world to life. Most of that terrain is my friend Chris's, including the 4x4 neoprene winter mat. We still had a lotof his and my stuff we didn't use. I should be getting my own 4x4 snow and tundra neoprene mat in a week or so.

Instead of using the money I got from selling all 3 Mice and Mystics releases I had to buy into a new miniatures system, I'm going to use it for more terrain. The different levelled style that is at the bottom left in most pictures, West of the checkerboard tile ruins, and the type that has the giant worm on it, is really neat. It's Chris's and came prepainted, and is modular so that you can all kinds of setups. I'm going to buy some of that to have for my own collection and to use in conjunction with his, or when I want to play and don't have his stuff available. It'll be about $120 or $130, but certainly worth it since I plan on playing the heck out of this game and even try to get my daughters interested enough to try it out. I could probably also use it for The Drowned Earth game and have it in a jungle setting.

Well Chris and Decatur got to my house a little after 1 and left at 5:30. Chris had a couple boxes of stuff to bring in, and we chatted for awhile before even setting it up. Decatur hadn't filled out his warband sheet yet, so he had to do that too. It was also our first game, though Chris had taught it to a couple people at our group's all day event on the 29th. So maybe a few hours of play, but we did do a lot of chatting and had a few fancy beers

There is some out of game stuff we each have to do, like level up our wizards and some other cool things. 3 of my soldiers (Poleaxe McMichael, Kid Mace, and Big Sack Bill) got knocked out during the game, so I had to roll after the game to see if they died, were seriously wounded (can't participate in next game) or were ok. Kid Mace ended up dying but the other 2 are fine. He was a lowly Thug that only cost 20 gold crowns. So for the next game, I can bring back all the other soldiers but will have to pay to replace Kid Mace. Though now that I have 110 gold crowns from treasure gained during the game, maybe I'll spend 80 for a Man at Arms, or just save my money and get another cheap Thug, or equally cheap Thief. Definitely good to have some cheap expendables as well as some specialists.

Interesting. I'll have to look into it more to see how it compares to the RPGs I like. Is there a Gamemaster that controls the monsters?

Yeah, I don't they are anything alike. From what I've seen of Runewars, that's mostly a clash of armies type of game. Frostgrave is smaller unit scale of only being allowed 10 members of your warband, and while there is fighting and lots of magic using, your main goal is to get treasure off the board. After the game you roll on a treasure table to see how much gold each treasure is worth, as well as some magic items. You want gold to hire better soldiers, items and enhancing your hideout.

No Gamemaster. The monsters are random for the most part and you roll to see which table edge they enter on. Then after the soldier's phase of the round, there is a monster phase. They have an AI that will have them move toward the closest player figure. If you move within an inch of one, they will force combat. They can also close on you with their normal move if able. Other players will roll the dice for the monster during combat. Sometimes monsters won't show up, sometimes they will. Some scenarios have special rules that have monsters more involved.

Re: What Board Game Are You Currently Playing?

Runewars has exploration and dudes on a map, with players - potentially more than two - battling over resources scattered across the play area. As you say, it has more dudes.

Re: What Board Game Are You Currently Playing?

I see you guys have a tape measure on the table there. Would it be easier with a short stick or ruler marked out. That is probably the only reason I haven't dived into gridless terrain, measuring out all your actions. I don't suppose it would be too irritiating. What's your thoughts on that @Hahma .

Some gamers uses these types measuring tools.

Though for Frostgrave, bow range is 24 inches and some move is greater than 6 inches.

I'm used to tape measures. They make real small ones too.

Re: What Board Game Are You Currently Playing?

Had a nice gaming day on Saturday. I played

2x 7 Wonders Duel
Food Chain Magnate
Caverna
Istanbul

I've had Caverna and Istanbul for awhile now and I really enjoy both of them. I'm always happy when I get to play them. I also won both so that's always fun too!

I played 7 Wonders Duel for the 1st time. Won the first game, lost the second. I liked it, but I don't think it is amazing. I don't quite get the hype on this one. There are lots of other 2 great 2 player games that I prefer. I'll still play 7 Wonders Duel occasionally and enjoy it, but I'll still be reaching for stuff like Summoner Wars and Hive before that.

It was also my first time trying Food Chain Magnate, or any of those really strategically heavy Splotter games. I had a fun time playing, but I got stomped by the more experienced player--which is hardly surprising as after playing there is an incredible amount of depth just to understand how to play competently much less play well. As such I don't think I am likely to get into those type of games. I just have more fun with other games like Caverna, Agricola, Terra Mystica, etc where a new player can relatively quickly figure out how to at least feel successful at doing something and feel like they can maybe compete.

Here I just feel like experience will trump all for the first couple plays and it just wasn't an interesting enough game to make me want to play it that often to actually figure out how to play well enough for me to really enjoy it. An alright game I'll probably play occasionally when the group wants it but not a great one for me.

But overall it was a great gaming day. I really wanted to find a group in Madison here to play these heavier type games that I can't often get family or casual gamers to play with me and thus far it has been a great success. I'm able to get those titles to the table and satisfy that itch while I can continue to enjoy a bit more lighter fare and social dedication and party games with others.

After posting this I had some crazy fun ideas for different game systems. All I can say for now is I have been inspired. Ill post my ideas in pdf form later. Thanks.

Re: What Board Game Are You Currently Playing?

Totally missed those Frostgrave pics.
Super sweet.

A few questions.
Did you make the bridges?
How easy would it be to use some of that terrain for Heroscape?
Would the stairs work for Heroscape?
Is that large stone bridge an aquarium piece? Pet World?
I have been contemplating buying one for years. Would that work on a Heroscape board?

Thanks!

I made the 2 darker brown bridgesand Chris made the lighter brown ones. I used the sticks I got from Hobby Lobby, same as I used for the upper floor of that Heroscape ruins piece. Chris used coffee stir sticks. He actually liked the wood from mine better because it shows the wood grain nicely.

I'll have to check to see if the stairs will work, in the sense of Scape bases fitting on them. I have to leave for game night in a couple minutes.

The bridge is from a pet store. Not sure which, but I think Chris said it cost around $25.

As far as what would work for Scape, I suppose it all would if you come up with rules as far as placement on the map and somehow mark hexes on them. The scale of our figures is like 28mm to 32mm, as manufacturers don't make them all consistent. Frostgrave allows you to use minis from various sources, which makes it easier to get into for people with a bunch of DnD stuff laying around.

Home from gaming and took some pictures to give better visual with Scape figures.
This is from 4Ground Games from England. http://www.4ground.co.uk/ruins-of-daldorr

These pieces are for a game called Malifaux. These come pre-colored and you just have to assemble/glue. http://www.miniaturemarket.com/pcgmf008.html

These are Pegasus Hobbies Ruins pieces. Those two come in the kit. Pretty easy build, painting isn't too bad.

Here's the aquarium piece from a pet store. Just found it on Amazon for around $35.
