Heavy Hitter or Mid-Level Hero Test
- Does it pass, Yes or No? YES!
- What should be the unit's point value? 440-450 POINTS
- Give a brief overview. She's good - great, even - but actually worse than I expected. About on par with our current mid-400s heroes... alone, at least, and against heroes.
Spoiler Alert!
TEST 1
Map: Mountain Spring
Units: Dark Phoenix (450 Points) vs. Superman II (450 Points)
Dark Phoenix wins; 5 Wounds, 2 Rounds. A quick and dirty match - it seems pretty even to begin with, but Phoenix starts to roll good with her Psionic Wave and Superman starts to roll badly, and he's dead quick.
TEST 2
Map: Mountain Spring
Units: Dark Phoenix (450 Points) vs. Superman II (450 Points)
Superman wins; 6 Wounds, 3 Rounds. Though the auto-wounds are punishing, Superman gets in some good hits and is able to break through Dark Phoenix's shell.
TEST 3
Map: Mountain Spring
Units: Dark Phoenix (460 Points) vs. Destroyer Armor (460 Points)
Dark Phoenix wins; 4 Wounds, 2 Rounds. A map with hills against a melee unit without flying... is a good matchup for Dark Phoenix. She kept knocking him back and he could only get in one good punch.
TEST 4
Map: Mountain Spring
Units: Dark Phoenix (460 Points) vs. Destroyer Armor (460 Points)
Destroyer Armor wins; 3 Wounds, 2 Rounds. Even with the hills, it was tough to keep the Armor away without landing Psionic Wave rolls. And outside of that... she doesn't have much in the way of defenses against heavy-hitters.
TEST 5
Map: Mountain Spring
Units: Dark Phoenix (450 Points) vs. Thor (430 Points)
Dark Phoenix wins; 9 Wounds, 3 Rounds. The match is pretty tough - Thor takes a lot of damage through the entire thing, and it looks bad for him until he gets a huge 5 Wound hit in near the end. Still loses, though.
TEST 6
Map: Mountain Spring
Units: Dark Phoenix (450 Points) vs. Thor (430 Points)
Dark Phoenix wins; 8 Wounds, 3 Rounds. This match is all Thor - Dark Phoenix can't nail her Psionic and he just keeps hitting her. But the Phoenix Fire and the slow burn of her normal attacks eventually breaks him down anyways.
TEST 7
Map: Mountain Spring
Units: Dark Phoenix (450 Points) vs. Yellow Lantern: Thaal Sinestro + Sinestro Corps Soldier (440 Points)
Sinestro Corps wins; 4 Wounds and 1 Battery Marker on Sinestro, 1 Wound and 2 Battery Markers on Sinestro Corps Soldier, 1 Round. Sinestro moves in and BRUTALLY takes down Dark Phoenix. He takes a lot of damage himself, but Force of Fear makes a real monkey out of her and the Soldier only added insult to injury.
TEST 8
Map: Mountain Spring
Units: Dark Phoenix (450 Points) vs. Yellow Lantern: Thaal Sinestro + Sinestro Corps Soldier (440 Points)
Dark Phoenix wins, 5 Wounds, 1 Round. A reversal this time - DP is able to withstand Sinestro's assault, and once he's down low she finishes him off easily, with the Soldier soon after.
TEST 9
Map: Mountain Spring
Units: Dark Phoenix (450 Points) vs. Kang x2 (440 Points)
Kangs win, 2 Wounds on Kang A, Kang B destroyed, 2 Rounds. WOW what a match. At first it seems like DP will dominate, killing one of the Kangs in a single blast, but Kang A is able to take his ally's Temporal Displacement Glyph and then things get interesting. He moves back and forth constantly, taking a turn and laying down a Glyph, removing the other Glyph to take another turn and moving back on to the original. So he's A) getting two turns with each Order Marker and B) moving Dark Phoenix wherever he wants. Long story short DP nearly kills him, but he uses Temporal Defense to save himself and is able to kill DP before even reaching that lost third turn. SUCH a cool match guys you have NO idea.
TEST 10
Map: Mountain Spring
Units: Dark Phoenix (450 Points) vs. Kang x2 (440 Points)
Kangs win, 3 Wounds on Kang A, Kang B destroyed, 3 Rounds. Same as before, but Dark Phoenix got really close at the end, engaging and tying Kang down. It would have been a tie - Phoenix Fire ended up dealing the last wound after she was destroyed.

Squad Test

Army Test
- Does it pass, Yes or No? NO!
- What should be the unit's point value? 300~ POINTS
- Give a brief overview. As a team, they were pretty much useless. Particularly with the one-on-one nature of the match - Phoenix can tear through squads, but against a 15-life flaming demon lord? She's neutered and soft. Definitely not her matchup.
Map: Mountain Spring
Units: Dark Phoenix, Phoenix, Jean Grey (900 Points) vs. Surtur (900 Points)
_____________________________________________________________
Army Test
- Does it pass, Yes or No? YES!
- What should be the unit's point value? 490+ POINTS
- Give a brief overview. This time, things went a lot better for Phoenix. Jean alone was on a real roll, killing BOTH Vigilantes and pretty much decimating the opposing army before even evolving. But Phoenix wasn't TOO hard to put down so, I think, if luck turned the other way, it would have been closer. I think DP may still need a price boost, though.
Map: Mountain Spring
Units: Dark Phoenix, Phoenix, Jean Grey (900 Points) vs. Batman, Robin: Dick Grayson, Robin: Tim Drake, Punisher, Commissioner Gordon, 5th Precinct Beat Cops x3 (885 Points)
Spoiler Alert!
Dark Phoenix wins; Dark Phoenix unharmed, all others destroyed, 7 Rounds.
ROUND 1: Punisher is Gordon's Vigilante. He gets warped forward and Dick follows. Both sides advance until Jean is close enough to hits Punisher for three.
ROUND 2: Jean is able to throw Punisher around and kill him on her first turn. She moves in on Batman, who takes three wounds. He's able to catch second wind near the end of the match, as he and Tim are able to put in three wounds.
ROUND 3: Jean finishes Batman off and takes time on Robin. It's a rough one; he gets three wounds during the round and she takes none.
ROUND 4: The cops start to move in with Gordon's help, finally taking down Jean, even if Tim is killed.
ROUND 5: Phoenix is reborn, but has no luck against the Cops. They, on the other hand, are able to deal three solid wounds. Their luck does not continue.
ROUND 6: Somehow, the Cops are able to kill Phoenix! Of course, now Dark Phoenix emerges... when she does, she kills all three in one turn. She moves on to kill Gordon.
ROUND 7: Psionic Wave finishes off Dick.
Army Test
- Does it pass, Yes or No? YES!
- What should be the unit's point value? 500+ POINTS
- Give a brief overview. This one was closer for sure, and I think another turn or two could have really turned things around... but DP is just hell on any team, honestly. Unless you have a major heavy hitter you're out of luck.
Map: Mountain Spring
Units: Dark Phoenix, Red Skull, Hawkeye, Black Widow (1000 Points) vs. Professor X, Jean Grey, Cyclops, Angel, Beast, Iceman (1000 Points)
Spoiler Alert!
Team Phoenix wins; 7 Wounds on Dark Phoenix, 1 Wound on Black Widow, Hawkeye unharmed, Red Skull destroyed, 6 Rounds.
ROUND 1: DP flies in fast, before the Mutants can organize. She's able to kill Angel and put a wound on Professor X, but not before Cyclops is able to put two wounds on her.
ROUND 2: Phoenix moves in deep, no longer locked down by Jean. She tears through the opposition a bit, even though Jean puts on two more wounds. Cyclops goes afar to try and take out Red Skull, but, no dice. Finally DP kills Professor X.
ROUND 3: DP, tied up across the board, kills Jean Grey. Cyclops, however, is blasting at Red Skull. He sends in Black Widow to deal with him, but he's able to kill Red Skull on Turn 2.
ROUND 4: Cyclops tries to fight back, but can't manage it and is killed.
ROUND 5: Beast hurries in to do some damage, and he's able to deal 2 Wounds. But he's killed by the end of the round.
ROUND 6: Iceman makes a valiant effort and deals a wound, but... he's dead before long, too.
Army Test
- Does it pass, Yes or No? YES!
- What should be the unit's point value? 500+ POINTS
- Give a brief overview. Wow that was a super fun game! As long as the opponent has a heavy hitter or two, DP isn't TOO bad to go up against... though she's definitely a dominant figure. She was able to do more 3/4ths of damage to Thor and kill Iron Man MK5 alone, and by chance killed Wonder Man (though that was as much his fault as anyone else's). A great fight.
Map: Mountain Spring
Units: Jean Grey, Phoenix, Dark Phoenix, Professor X, Cyclops, Psylocke, Emma Frost, Jubilee, Gambit (2000 Points) vs. Captain America: Steve Rogers, Thor, Iron Man: MK1, Iron Man: MK5, Wasp, Wonder Man, Bruce Banner, Incredible Hulk: Bruce Banner, Mockingbird (2000 Points)
Spoiler Alert!
X-Men Phoenix wins; 2 Wounds on Gambit, Cyclops, Professor X, and Jubilee unharmed, all others destroyed, 9 Rounds.
ROUND 1: Thor, Wonder Man, Hulk, and the Iron Men are Avengers. Both teams advance, with Iron Man putting a wound on Jean. Jean, in response, pulls up Cap and puts three wounds on him with her normal attack. Psylocke can't do anything, though.
ROUND 2: Shock and horror - Cap goes down in the first turn of the next round! Iron Man takes Jean down with his next attack, with his Android pulling Jean out of the Professor's range. The Professor moves in with his next move, then takes a turn with Phoenix and Emma, dealing a wound to robo-Iron Man.
ROUND 3: Tony flies in and hits Emma for two, while Iron Man deals a wound to Phoenix. They can't retaliate. Thor flies in and WHAMS Phoenix, killing her... and bringing out Dark Phoenix, and dealing Psylocke a wound. Gambit comes in and Psylocke runs back, taking a leaving engagement wound. Iron Man blasts DP for two and puts a wound on Thor via Phoenix Fire. Psylocke comes in and gives Thor another two wounds.
ROUND 4: Dark Phoenix gets into motion, taking an LE from Iron Man but dealing a wound to Thor via Psionic Wave. She then attacks him, dealing a CRUSHING four wounds and killing the God of Thunder! Gambit engages Iron Man, while Emma puts another wound on Iron Bot. DP moves, her Psionic Wave killing Iron Bot and wounding Iron Man, who she then damages with two more wounds.
ROUND 5: DP moves, finishing off Iron Man but wounding Gambit. Professor X advances slowly opposite Wonder Man. DP and WM engage in the shadows, but no wounds are dealt.
ROUND 6: DP yanks Wonder Man around, then deals two wounds... suddenly, Wonder Man explodes, dealing two wounds to her! Wasp then flies in, using her Wasp Sting to finish DP off. Gambit leaps in and kills Wasp.
ROUND 7: Bruce runs into an engagement, while Gambit engages Mockingbird. Mockingbird LEAPS into the fray, finishing off Emma Frost but taking three wounds from Psylocke. Cyclops moves in, then Psylocke kills Mockingbird.
ROUND 8: Cyclops kills Bruce, bringing out the HULK! He and Psylocke pound on him, dealing two wounds but not enraging him. He leaps up onto height.
ROUND 9: Hulk runs down and hits Cyclops, but Professor X blocks him. He and Jubilee pound on Hulk... and Jubilee, with three wounds, finishes him off! Just for fun, I continued as if Bruce Banner had been able to heal off three wounds. Hulk kills Cyclops with his next attack, then leaps down and hits Xavier for three.
ROUND 10: Hulk leaps down and hits X, who blocks it. He and Jubilee pound on him, dealing a wound. He kills Xavier as Gambit runs in. He kills Gambit, but not before taking another wound.
ROUND 11: Jubilee just barely puts in a last wound on the Hulk - he no doubt would have murdered her with his next turn.
FINAL THOUGHTS: She's good - great. She's generally pretty dominant overall... but not TOO far above the bounds. Against a bunch of low-level figures she's hell, but against super heavy hitters like Surtur she has no chance. I think dropping her Life down to 9 should be good with her at 490... but that's a high-end estimate and I expect either her price to go up or her Life to go down some more after playtesting.
