GenCon Day GC T-4 (Sunday, August 1).
Worked today and enjoyed it, with breakfast at church, then Sunday School and worship. A lot of people were gone on vacation trips, but we still had good singing and a sermon on Zechariah 1:1-6. Then, at noon, I became, officially "on vacation."
The afternoon has been spent eating left-overs for lunch (a swiss and Prem sandwich on whole grain bread), taking a nap, and thinking about the next week. I've already been shopping at the Dollar Store for Slim Jims to eat during the tournament events (keep the diabetic in protein). I also sat doing this and watching the Food Channel on TV. So, it's vacation for sure!
Watching the weather...it is 99 in Little Rock right now and 85 in Indy. I'll take the cooler weather as a travel bonus, if I can get it. We're predicted to have temps over 100 (real temperature) all week long.
GenCon Day GC T-3 (Monday, August 2).
A sure sign...

I can remember, when I was four years old, at my grandparents’ home in Wisconsin, sitting on the cold floor, putting together puzzles. One was a Hopalong Cassidy one and another the Cisco kid. That might give you a clue to the ancient era of this memory. My mother, later, told the story that when there, I was sleep-walking, my hands moved as if putting the puzzle pieces in place in my sleep. I was hooked on puzzles.
Six years later, at age ten, I was introduced to a brand-new game, Tactics II (Avalon Hill) which changed my view of what games could be. (Up until then, they were just luck and I wasn't very lucky. Suddenly I saw that games could depend on being smart.)
I love games. All sorts, even athletic ones, although my knees, which got kicked in by a six-foot four Swede exchange student in college, did reduce my on-field life.
So, when I discovered HeroScape, especially in conjunction with my reduced mobile life due to two bouts of cancer (colon...

Each year, I write a story for our Christmas Eve service. This is this year's.
Can You See What I See? – Of course not!
A Story for Christmas Eve 2008
There is an ancient and venerable legend that on Christmas Eve, at the very stroke of midnight, the animals around the manger where Jesus was born are given the ability to speak in human tongue. For one hour they are allowed to tell the story from their point of view and then they are silent, at least silent of human speech, until the next December 24th. I don’t know if the tradition of the legend is true, but I invite you to believe that it is for at least one of the animals with whom we, in our imaginations, populate the crčche of Jesus.
Call me Seymour. Actually, you need to say it in donkey. “SeeeeeMour.” It rhymes with Eeyore. And it’s a donkey name, a burro name, the name of an ass. That’s me. And you can well guess that the reason I’m talking to you this evening is because...

Ask Papa-'Scape (humor)
Hello, again, boys and gulls. It's been a few weeks since old Papa-'Scape has had a chance to sit down and share his amazing wisdom with the wonderful world of HeroScapers.com. We've had a national election and many local ones, some of which are still counting. You can count on them to be counting and recounting for another month, at least, and that brings us to our first question.
Dear Papa-'Scapeman,
Our game group is arguing about how many starting hexes you have to have in a game. So, dude, how many?
Dear Counting,
There was that old flag, back during the American Revolution (I remember it like it was yesterday) with the motto "Don't Tread on Me." Well, I say, "Don't Count on Me." Don't call me "dude," either.
As to your question, though, how many starting hexes do you have to have in a game, the answer depends on several factors. First, it depends on what game you're...

Ask Papa-'Scape (humor)
Good morning, boys and girls and other things or people! Autumn is in the air and allergies are stuffing up our noses. School is back in full swing and Christmas preparations or ones for your other favorite mid-winter holiday are in their most fevered planning modality. It is a great day for a short nap and National HeroScape Day (always the third Saturday in October) has just passed us by. That brings us to our very first question for this edition of "Ask Papa-'Scape."
Dear Papa-'Scape,
Our [State name omitted as a courtesy] group did not get together on National HeroScape Day but we wanted to. Some of the members had to look at some land they had recently bought. Others had just gotten married and were much too busy. One had just bought some oxen and needed to inspect the livestock. So we didn't get together. My question is: can we have a tournament or a game day on another day for our National HeroScape Day celebration?
