Saved this guy from becoming a Crow's meal

Yesterday heading out to a meeting, I passed a crow doing battle with something on the sidewalk.
I pulled my car over, got out, and crossed the street to discover the creature was a lizard. The reptile was putting up one heckuva fight.
I've got him in an aquarium with some sand. I'll eventually let him go free.
Here
He's a tough little guy.
I picked him up yesterday and he bit me good on my index finger. Almost drew blood. Now I respect him and handle him with a leather glove.
Also notice his tail was once broken off and is now growing back nicely. He must've been another predator's menu a while back, huh?

No clue! I know blue-bellies when I see them, but he's not one of those!
When my topmost YouTube video ends, look for the video in the scroll at the bottom. There's a dog who gets nipped on the nose. Looks like the same type of lizard. |

Found it.
Southern Alligator Lizard. One of three types of alligator lizards native to Califonia. Get this: The lizards can frequently be found near human habitation and are notable for their fearless self-defense; they will often bite and defecate if handled. In the wild they eat small arthropods, slugs, lizards, small mammals and occasionally young birds and eggs. (Stebbins, 2003) They are not difficult to catch or keep in captivity, and make suitable and interesting pets. They will thrive and even breed if fed on small insects such as crickets supplemented with suitable vitamins and minerals. This is that lizard! He's a mean SOB and he did defecate when I was holding him with leather gloves (luckily!) |
