Hail Utgar!
As the day fast approaches (Friday, 8/26/11) for the Gang of Four's initial playing of The Rapture of Raelin! (http://www.heroscapers.com/community/blog.php?b=1838), I am again in the throes of building armies for it. At 650 points, and favoring 20-siders with a few Glyphs of Lodin, I was leaning towards the following army:
220 Minions of Utgar x 2 (all I have)
120 Runa
100 Ornak
90 Sir Hawthorne
50 Iskra
50 Reckets
20 Marcu
650, 14 spaces
My only fear was that I had no large/huge figure(s) to counter Braxas, who, even without the benefit of the Glyphs due to Acid Breath Diffusion, is a terror in this format, due to the preponderance of small/medium units - which is why I am probably going with
220 Minions x 2
120 Runa
100 Ornak
100 Pulverizer
50 Iskra
50 Reckets
10 Isamu
650, 13 spaces
There are obvious weaknesses still, of course, but the combined synergies between Runa and the Minions, Iskra and the Reckets, and Ornak, Runa, Iskra and the remaining 2 heroes, within the context of this format, should make for an entertaining evening. Or a nightmarish one, if I face Dividers, Stingers, range, etc.
I am always torn between and among various approaches to our monthly game. I look forward to playing immensely, and want to share the process of coming up with an army with the Community. It is not enough for me when I display my builds, nor when I read of others', just to see them on a page. I want to know what the builder is thinking, and what he anticipates will happen, and what matchups he fears, if any, and why, and what he plans to do about it.
I can count on certain people to choose their armies with the lowest variance, highest Ranking units, with the most logical chance to win. Most of us have a pretty good idea of what those are, and how they compare, rock/paper/scissors-wise.
I can count on certain other people to insist on continuing to find a way for their favorite units, that do not exist among the units in the paragraph above, to compete with them. Within this latter group is one well known to you all - Killercactus.
I have owned Runa and 1 squad of Minions for a very long time. I had no inclination to play either. But, recently, through Auggies, I was able to acquire another squad. Naturally, I started looking for ways to use them. The "classic" Minion army has 3 squads, but I am compelled to play 2, as that is the number I own.
Coincidentally, looking for a good, new scenario to create for our group, and for everyone to share, and coming up empty, I decided to revisit, and improve a previous scenario - A Swell Party!(http://www.heroscapers.com/community/blog.php?b=1572) - by using Raelin as the Princess (with no Guardians, and other rules reworkings) and Glyph(s) of Lodin instead of an Attack +1, as well as making the Map more viable (less height). The result (hopefully) preserves those aspects of the scenario that were good (the Ballroom, the start zone restrictions), gets rid of the bad (too much height, too favorable for flyers and range), and adds a new and entertaining facet (encouraging use of 20-siders) to the scenario.
Of course, this "encouragement" is not enough that the first group of folks I mentioned earlier would not still field the same armies as before, but some of us will feel better about our normally insane attempts to extract more favorable outcomes for the Runas of the world than expected, given past history.
So it is that I field an Ornak army containing Runa/Minions and Iskra/Reckets, and feel good about my chances.

Army TweakHail Utgar!
[This is basically for chas, as he is looking at units I am not using.] This is a slight variation of the army above: 220 Minions x 2 120 Runa 100 Ornak 90 Feral Troll 90 Sir Hawthorne 20 Marcu 10 Isamu 650, 13 spaces I was concerned about Goblins, thus Sir Hawthorne. I also wanted Marcu & Isamu, as extra heroes for Ornak, and extra cards for initial placement. |

It's Almost Time . . . ![F]Hail Utgar!
As those few who follow my obsessive ramblings herein know, I have set my course for this game with a bizarre (but ) combination of synergies in play . . . 1. Runa/Minions x 2; and 2. Ornak w/Runa/Sir Hawthorne/Feral Troll/Marcu/Isamu. As I am building the Map, I shall make it melee friendly. I need all the help I can get! If it were not for the ing I would be subjected to for playing the "same old guys" again, I'd probably try . . . 160 Sonlen 150 Goblins x 3 120 Kaemon 100 Mindflayer 10 Isamu 650, 17 spaces The Goblins could try to get lucky with Glyph-grabbing, while my heroes have plenty of 20-sider action, healing, and KAEMON! How could I lose?[/font] |
