Ultimate Heroscape?

Posted September 27th, 2010 at 06:38 PM by kolakoski
Well met!

Luck evens out over time. That is, you may be unlucky or lucky over a certain number of instances, but, over time (and larger numbers of instances), the results will cancel out luck entirely, according to many in the Luck versus Skill threads in the forums. Also, anticipating and mitigating your opponent's opportunities to get lucky is a large facet of skill, usually ignored by those who blame their losses on luck.

Tournaments, in general, due to inherent limitations, in points, time constraints, and viable unit combinations, are a test of skill, yes, but not the ultimate one. A "casual" game of 750 to 1000 or more points over 10 rounds would be a different test, as the element of luck would be mitigated by the far larger number of instances where it has an effect (many more die rolls). Also, any unit restrictions which increase the number of viable units and combinations of units increase the number and kinds of skills required to build/play...

Pirates! A Unit Strategy Review

Well met!

Introduction

Riffing off the title of the popular "Unit Strategy Review" series ("Power Rankings" to follow, Jexik? ), in anticipation of the Gang of Four's October get together, for which it appears our new friend, Glen, and an old friend of chas' that I have met, Troy, will be joining us such that there will be six players (3 vs 3), and for the joy of it , we (it's professorial) will be discussing various units and classes of units in the context of this scenario. As we do, the overall strategic and tactical elements of the game will inevitably be addressed as well. The scenario itself can be found at:

[Note that this guide was written before Second Wind was changed, from dice rolled = total life, rather than dice rolled = total life minus 1, so references to low life units are now obsolete.]

Philosophies of Team (Cooperative?) Play

Posted September 17th, 2010 at 10:10 AM by kolakoski

Well met!

As I have been creating various armies for what chas called a Meet-and-Greet game, in which Sherman, chas, and I are playing against Glen, his wife, and their friend, Matt, my internal debate over which of two armies to play has led me to a broader consideration of what goes into army construction in a team game.

The two armies in question are

Patience

160 Shurrak
120 Tagawa Samurai
100 Syvarris
100 Iron Golem or Kozuke?
40 Theracus
500

and

Fantasy Airborne

185 Nilfeim
150 Cyprien
120 Black Wyrmlings x 4
45 Sonja
500

I put this choice to the Community in the Competitive Armies forum, asking which one people would prefer to play. The vast majority (only 1 page ) chose Fantasy Airborne ( I know; it was in the Competitive Armies forum ). Actually, only delph chose Patience, saying, "I'd play the...

Pirates! - A Valhalla Society Adventure

Well met!

In anticipation of Our Gang's October playdate (10/15), and inspired by a recent discussion of the subject in the forums, chas and I have created the following scenario:

Pirates!

The Iron Brotherhood had successfully completed looting the fabled Hoard of Dragons in the City of the Undead on the Island of Eternal Sleep, and were sailing for home. In spite of the Covenants, signed in blood by both Captains, that prohibited violence, the long-standing enmity between them, and their fanatically loyal crews (as well as their unalterable greed), it was not surprising that they turned on each other the moment the Island disappeared beneath the horizon. After a day and night of dancing death, the mighty Ships were now entwined in their final embrace, and only one crew was destined to survive . . .

Teams: 2 Teams of 2-4 players,...
