Custom units in my comic card template
Posted July 17th, 2009 at 02:17 AM by hextr1p
I've been trying to put together a unit card based on the Marvel comic army cards, and I finally finished one I was happy with.
Obviously, there are a few visual differences from the official cards. Most notably the lights replacing the power cables. I did this to help better signify that the set-up is my own card design seeing as how I couldn't fit my tag anywhere on the card without it looking overly ugly. I may switch the lights up with something different based on the characters I put together (wires, pipes, etc.). But for now, this is good.
Also, I created my own super strength and flight icons. Not a knock against those here on this site. I just wanted to use EPS versions for the best print quality. And, okay, I kind of like my flight icon a little more.
So take a look and let me know what you think!

:: PREDATOR::

Figure used: Predator from the HorrorClix Alien Queen set
I mixed this one up with stats and a power of my own, some heavy inspiration from Annerios' great Predator customs, and some rewording of different special powers. I got a great deal on this figure, so I've been meaning to put it to use for a while.
Originally I had this guy set up as a Vydar unit. But I think the comic book card template really helps to provide the unit with more theme.

:: THOR::

Figure used: Heroclix, The Mighty Thor convention exclusive #224
*Note: Custom is not mine! Designed by Matt Helm and Garada. I only did the artwork for this one and cleaned up some of the special power wording!
Wanted to test out a color combination and thought it best to use a figure I already had in the Might Thor con exclusive. I felt MHnG's Thor custom worked best for what I was looking to do, and I think the color combo came out quite nice in representation of the Asgardian champion. Also, you can see the superstrength and flight icons.

Nice work, Hex! You should cross post these in the Comic Customs section

Great job on that Predator
~Aldin, amused that the Predator isn't a predator (and of course he shouldn't be) |

Simply amazing. I love all of the shading and coloring on that predator card, and thor looks awesome.

CAV: Yeah, I'll be sure to do that later. I also am going to set up a download for the icons I used.
ALDIN: Thanks! And no, a Predator should not be a predator. Theme over redundancy, that's my motto... that and, "Macaroni and cheese makes it better!" EP: Yeah, it's all about the texturing. I couldn't duplicate the exact Marvel card texture, so I went with something I thought looked pretty nice. And it's versatile! |

They look great, absolutely stunning work.
If I may add one small critique. The word "POINTS" on the Predator card is hard to read or even see. It may be because of the image quality and a real-life card would not be fuzzy, but it was the only thing I noticed that may even need a hint of tweaking. Btw, the Thor card not only looks amazing, the powers and such are great too! Great job to all! |

Awesome! Those cards look great!
I'm a bigger fan of Predator than Marvel and that combination of abilities are both representative and playable! |

ETERNAL: I noticed this, too, about the 'POINTS' text and will go back and change it. Thanks for pointing that out, though. And the Thor card is fun to play. There are other good Thor cards out there, but I felt this MHnG card was both thematic and easily playable within the structure of the official HS game. A welcome addition to my Marvel Heroes!
DARKMAGE: Thanks! As I mentioned, the Predator cards are heavily inspired by Annerios (another member here). He has a few other Predator cards posted in the customs section. But yes, this fig is quite fun! There are so many different ways to take this unit as far as theme. I'm thinking of putting together an alternate card eventually with different special powers. WHITESTUFF: Yah, they blink n' stuff... like Chrimmas! |
