Well met!

First of all, I would like to thank all those who participated in organizing this event for their hard work and kindness, and to Grishnak and son for picking up Chas, Sherman and I at the LIRR station and making us feel so welcome. it was also nice for all of us to put some faces to those we otherwise know only from this forum.

[I fielded 2 x 10th, Kaemon, Krav, Kumiko and the Marro Warriors.]

I was fortunate not to encounter Taeblewalker, Onacara or Sherman (1st, 2nd and 3rd place finishers, respectively), or things might not have gone as well for me as they did. I also did not contend with Rats or the "Steamroller".

This is not a Battle Report per se, as I am vague about details, but more of an impressionistic view of what happened, and the lessons learned.

My first opponent was the lad, Dylan, who fielded Parmenio, Sacred Band x 4, Kaemon and Isamu, on Highways. He scared the #$%^ out of me...

Islandscape Practice II

Posted July 24th, 2009 at 10:42 AM by kolakoski
Well met!

In this missive, I will be considerate of my friends, and not reveal the identities of their units. I will instead comment upon the wisdom hopefully gleaned from the experience.

1st Kenshikai

2 x 10th
Kaemon
Krav
Kumiko
Marro Warriors

I faced no classic 500 point armies in the three games I played. No Knights, no Glads/Blasts, no Nilf, and no Rats. My army consists entirely of A/A- Power Ranking units, except for Kumiko. I can't put my finger on it, but there would be something wrong with taking Raelin, even if she would make my army stronger under most circumstances. As it was, the only real use I got out of Kumiko was as a glyph grabber on Highways and Dieways. Her 5 defense gave her a few turns of life. I lost the first game in a very tight contest that should cure me of my tendency not to clone the Marro Warriors in a timely manner. Otherwise, I won my last 2 games with few surprises (one without...

Islandscape Practice I

Well met!

Chas (He Who Owns All Heroscape) was kind enough to host us at his palacial game pad last evening. He had recreated a tourney map with snow, ice, water and mountains, cold, wet and bleak. I took my usual seat and placed the 1st Kenshikai before me.

Two full squads from the 10th Regiment of Foot, dirty fighters every one, were the core of my army. Barely able to suppress their eagerness, a mass of Marro Warriors prepared to rush across the stream before them, to the place of power in the near distance. The deadly Krav Maga, agents of a time in the far future, were arrayed ahead, to screen the main body from enemy skirmishers. In immediate support of them standing immobile, but radiating such force that the snow around them was melted for a foot in all directions, were two Heros. One was Kumiko, deadliest of all the Ninja in Valhalla, equal parts distraction and destroyer. The other was the Supreme Warrior, Master of the Sword and Bow, wielder of Counterstrike,...

The Roman Army . . . Not Today

Posted July 21st, 2009 at 12:00 PM by kolakoski
Well met!

See previous blog entry.

I give up. The Islandscape (GenCon Main Event) format does not permit me to create the kind of Roman army i desire. Therefore, I am going with the following:

150 2 x 10th
120 Kaemon
100 Krav
80 Kumiko (I insist)
50 Marro Warriors
500

575: add 1 x 10th; 600: add Raelin v1 & Marcu; 640: add Krug & Marcu.

The Roman Army Today

Well met!

RoninValentina posted recently, asking for help constructing his Main Event GenCon Roman army. Coincidentally, I am entering Islandscape, with its Main Event format, with just such an army. There seems to be a Consensus about certain things, but most issues are subtler and more subjective.

1. Take Marcus. The Romans are very slow. Marcus gives all soldiers +1 movement. Romans are soldiers, which brings us to . . .

2. Be a soldier. AE, 4th Mass., and 10th Reg. are soldiers and thus staples in Roman armies.

3. Take Raelin. Consensus might make this number 2. Roman armies clump.

4. Take Me-Burq-Sa over Ne-Gok-Sa. In a 500 point army, you need the 40 extra points. and MBS is great as the Fifth Attacker.

So the core of a 500 point Roman army is some combination of Marcus, MBS and 2 (or 3) squads of Romans, depending on what units you want in the 200-300 points remaining.

I believe Consensus...
