Anticipating A Swell Party!

Well met!

I don't know what to do. Not an unusual occurence, but rare as it pertains to Heroscape. I am of course referring to A Swell Party!

It is going to be chaos. Not that I'm complaining. I created the scenario, after all. But I am so not sure what army to field. There are so many issues that need to be addressed.

Of course, the object of the game is to get the Princess to your Portal, directly under the noses of all the other players and the WoA. I imagine a force, with lots of units that take no leaving engagement strikes, dashing through the battlefield, Princess in tow, blocking units heedlessly throwing themselves in the way of much stronger units, taking heavy losses, to finally make it to its Portal, moments ahead of the ravenous horde of its enemies.

I'm not at all certain that this is doable from the start of the game, but, after a few turns, with most units tied up and/or dead, I expect a lot of games to end this way....

Well met!

A Swell Party!

Despite her own doughty Warriors of Ashra standing ready within reach, the Immortal Elven Princess stood uneasily eying the various suitors for her hand, and their heavily-armed retinues. They had all arrived by Portal for the festivities and, while all would leave the same way, to only one one would she be betrothed, all having promised that the recent, temporary truce would become permanent, when she finally chose one of them to marry, who would then be crowned King (to whom they would immediately swear allegiance), upon the simultaneous events of attaining her majority and her marriage. She was very much afraid that there were those whose disagreement with her choice, her anticipated choice, or even her right to choose, might lead them to act rashly. As she began to speak, her worst fears were realized . . ....

Attempt the Impossible?

Posted January 9th, 2011 at 04:54 PM by kolakoski
Well met!

The Gang of Four plays again on the 21st of this month, and I am once again preparing a scenario. It is called The Rape of the Sabine Princess! Details are in the link below.

http://www.heroscapers.com/community...08#post1310108

Briefly, it is Heat of Battle played as a party for the presentation of a Princess, who is the Flag in a game of Capture the Flag. There is a neutral Guard force, which is controlled at the end of each turn by the player who had the lowest initiative roll.

The Princess in this case is Kyntela Gwyn (naturally). Her Guard are 4 squads of Warriors of Ashra. This is a fairly skill-based game, with the Guard adding only a bit of additional luck in exchange for the additional challenge. Getting the Princess off within HoB is an interesting challenge in its own right. This will play well and be entertaining.

What I'm wondering, though, is what you all think of the idea...

Christmas in Silver Spring; Snowbound in New York

Well met!

My stepdaughter-in-law is from Tanzania. Her name is Da-tou (the spelling is undoubtedly wrong, and the hyphen is there to hint at pronunciation). 5-6 years ago, in February (I know, I'm terrible), she presented us with a lovely granddaughter, Taleetha, which means in Aramaic, little princess. And she is one, in every sense of the word. (As I sit here typing this, my fingernails are a dark pink.)

My wife, Babs, is the sort of woman, well, if I were a man, and I were not around, I should be in love with Babs. Everyone loves Babs. We have a friend who always greets us by hugging and kissing Babs, and then saying, "Oh, it's you", in the manner of a man of style referring to someone he tolerates to be in the presence of so fine a woman.

Babs is determined that we be in her life, and she in ours, as much as possible. So it was that we were in Silver Spring, Maryland, for Christmas. We took a Megabus on Christmas Eve, no...

Reflections on Scenario Creation

Posted December 21st, 2010 at 02:42 PM by kolakoski
Well met!

I have spent an inordinate amount of time reading novels, as opposed to working, studying, exercising, etc. A good work of fiction (in print or on the screen), among other things, is totally engaging, makes you care about the characters, and gives them hard choices within a good story. I try to do the same when writing a Heroscape scenario.

I have my favorite Heroscape units, of course, that figure prominently in my personal Heroscape ethos, which has little or nothing to do with the "official" back story. I therefore don't write scenarios that dictate what units must be played. A related issue is writing scenarios, like Pirates!, with built-in unit restrictions, to encourage a wider variety of viable characters, or to create a certain ambience. Even there, I included a disclaimer to permit variants with fewer or no such restrictions, as many other players' ethoses differ radically from mine.

I mentioned "hard choices"...
