Work Frustration

Posted February 6th, 2010 at 09:39 AM by killercactus
As some of you that know me (or know of me) might be aware, I'm a CPA. For the non-business literate, that means Certified Public Accountant.

It also means this time of year sucks for me.

I've been working 10-11 hour days, and am now here on Saturday morning at 8:30, having already worked for 45 minutes.

That's normal for me this time of year, but what's not normal is the 13" of snow that Hubbard, OH has on the ground. What's also apparently not normal is that I actually drove to work in it.

Yesterday before I left, I talked to many of my co-workers in my "new" firm (I've been with this firm for about 9 months - since just after last tax season, so this is my first busy season), whether they were coming in today. Everyone said yes. Everyone also told each other "see you tomorrow!" when they left.

I, having a 30 minute drive normally and a connection from home, had planned to work from home today, knowing the weather was going to be bad. So, I told my manager I wanted to do this.

"Come on, Frank - it's tax season." was his response. It was somewhat in jest, but the general mood and tone suggested that it was expected that everyone come in tomorrow.

So, here I am. Alone.

There is one other person here right now, and he has a 5 minute drive and speculation flies around the office that he comes to work early and often just to get out of the house.

I woke up at 5 AM to shovel my driveway, only to have the snowplow plow me in again just as I'd finished at 6:15, and drove 1 hr (normally 30 minutes) to get here to work because I thought I was supposed to, and nobody's freaking here.

AHHHHHHH!

Oh yeah - Runa's awesome.

Bummer, dude. Why don't jobs set it up so that if you worked on Saturday (for whatever reason) you got Monday off?

When you have to get 55 hours a week in, it's kinda tough to take Monday off.

Well, just think of it this way.

After tax season, it'll be GenCon practice season.

Nah, because I can't go to GenCon, so it's just "Practice for what I would do at GenCon" season and "Take out my frustration on local tournaments" season.
