To Frenzy or not to Frenzy

I'm in a pickle.
I get to go to GenCon this year, which is awesome. I'm playing in the Main Event, which is even more awesome. My only other GenCon trip had me finish in the Top 8 of the Main Event, which I think is my greatest Heroscape accomplishment to date.
I'd love to duplicate that feat again this year, or even surpass it, especially since I know that I probably won't make it to GenCon every year, meaning my chances of representing on the biggest stage could be slim. So, up until about a week ago, I was set on playing one of 2 armies - both of which were highly evil, competitive, and I thought gave me a chance to go the distance.
Then, a week ago, phantazm21zero said to me while I was debating with him which of the two armies to play, "Play Vipers - you know you want to."
Yeah - easily for him to say knowing that he's playing the same army he's already used to win 3 tournaments up here.
At first I dismissed this, but then I started thinking about it. The point total, reinforcement schedule and maps are actually pretty favorable to a Venoc Viper army. Plus, I have a Dragon Wars ticket for Saturday morning if I don't make Day 2. Lastly, Venocs are my favorite unit to play and one that I've sworn to try to prove in the competitive arena. But do I really want to try and prove it on THE competitive arena of competitive arenas?
I don't know. My desire to make a run at winning the championship and proving my Heroscape skillz are clashing with my desire to play a really fun army and see if I can win with it (knowing I have something else to do Saturday morning if I don't make it). I'm sure that I'd have fun if I lost games with Vipers, but I'm also sure I'd enjoy winning games with the other army. I like the maps for Vipers, but I don't like that I'll probably see a lot of melee bonding, 4-figure ranged squads and Q9's ugly metal arse.
I'm truly at an impass. I fear that if I play Vipers, I won't make Day 2. But, I also feel like, with some good dice and decent matchups, I could pull a 4-1 and sneak in there, and if I do the reinforcements for my army are sick.
What would you do?
Curse you phantazm.....

Megasilver, I'm pretty sure killercactus has his viper army dialed in, and that's not it.
I feel like I'm in a pretty similar boat to you, actually. I really think I can win with both of the armies I'm most strongly considering, but one of them is more "my figures" while the other is more "eeew... that army". Ultimately, I think phantazm21zero is right. Do what you want to do. |

Use As Shock Troops with Deathreavers120 Kaemon
120 Mogrimm 100 Romans x 2 80 Vipers x 2 80 Deathreavers x 2 10 [Isamu] [or drop him leaving 500] 510 Deathreavers/Vipers/Romans/Kaemon in that order. |

I've been sold on the Beast for awhile.
Just enjoy yourself, Killer. Let the chips fall where they may. And doc, you enjoy yourself too; If you can have a blast playing "ewww that army!" for 5-9 games...then go for it. |

What's a cooler story to tell:
Getting 17th with Vipers, or getting 9th with the obvious? At the same time, I know exactly how you feel. I've not played any of the stuff since Wave 9 enough in a highly competitive environment to really know that I can swing it with them, but I'd also like to show that certain units are pretty good. ![]() I've gone 5-5 in the main event at GenCon; it has always been more stressful and less fun for me than most other tournaments. One of the few tournaments that I've won, I just played something I always liked and resolved to just have fun with it... I'm in a similar situation in Summoner Wars. I know that a certain strategy for one of the factions is way too good right now... but I'm not sure if I want to highlight that fact. |

Yeah - sorry Megasilver and kolakoski. If I do whip out the Vipers, those armies aren't it. I posted the army on the forums in other places, so I might as well post it here:
Q9 - 180 Raelin - 260 Vipers x6 - 500, 21 hexes Sure, it's not your typical themed Viper army, but I have my reasons for selecting it over a Mittens build or a pure Viper build. I've been pretty vocal about how I think Vipers should be played (or, at least, how I think they have the best chance to win), and I think this army does that in a few different ways (and no - it's not as obvious as "hope Q9 and Raelin kill everything and I never activate the Vipers"). I like that dok, Jexik and R˙chean are telling me to play Vipers. You think they're being serious, or are they thinking "Haha! If KC plays Vipers, that's one less player to worry about...." ![]() |

I vote vipers. I had great fun with them at my last tournament (Hydra, Venoc Warlord, Vipers x7). |

I love that army, ollie. I played against vipers + mittens + Hydra at the recent Colorado gameday, and if I hadn't been playing mega-cheese (4th+Cap!) I think it would have been a tough army to crack.
(Plus we played Jotun's Gap and forgot to put the ruins down, so it was a total shooting gallery. oops...) Jexik, placing 17th doesn't sound too fun, even if what you played was awesome... if you place 17th, it probably means that you went 3-2 and if one person you played had won one more game, you would have had a better SoS and been 16th. That's excruciating. |

KC- I think the chances of us playing against each other are low enough that I'm not going to give you bad advice to increase my odds of making day 2.
If we played on day 2, I'd just be happy to be there. Dok, I'd rather get 17th with something I really want to play than 17th with something that I only chose because I thought for sure it'd get me to day 2. Sometimes those things coincide. Some of my "fun" armies are really strong. |

I hope so, then you can expose Jexik for the fraud he is!!!!
What is even more excruciating is when you play that "eww" army and don't make Day 2! (I suspect anyway) There are far more of those stories than the other way around. Only 20% make it to Day 2; playing the ultimately "eww" army is no guarantee of anything, so if playing the "eww" isn't fun for whoever is playing it, then what is the point? You had a zing coming to you, Jexik! |

KC: Ive got you picked for the Fantasy Draft and I say play the Vipers. Ive only played 3 tournament games against them but every one of those games have been some of my most memorable. Clarissamus beat me at TTO with Archers and then the very next round I had to play another Archer army (I barely won that). The last tournament Tiny Timmy sure was putting me on the ropes with his vipers. I think in your skillful hands you wont need luck as much as some may think.
