FFC #22 - HiS Coming Soon

TGRF's Fan Fiction Chronicles - Entry 22

I have now completed the proofreading and editing of HiS. The size has been modified to 220 pages, 119,996 words.

Bigga still has to look over it, and it's uncertain when he'll be able to get to it, as he is currently busy. Hopefully within a few weeks though he'll be able to power through it. After that we just have to work out any changes based on his comments, and we're good to go. The release date entirely depends on how soon Bigga is able to work his magic. So no pressure, Bigga.

Fair warning: it is going to take a long time to post all of HiS. Several of the chapters are quite long, so I'll have to break them up. I intend to post at least once a day if I can, but even doing that, and even if I post a whole chapter a day, it would be two months before the whole thing is posted.

Hopefully my writing can keep you interested.

FFC #21 - TLFF Takes Shape (part 1)

TGRF's Fan Fiction Chronicles - Entry 21

TLFF (The Last Fan Fiction) has been struggling to resolve itself into a tangible form for awhile. I believe it's getting close, but in the event that everything changes, I won't be saying what direction it's taking until I'm sure.

While I proofread/edit HiS, I've been trying to define the theme/setting of TLFF, and I've recently had to face a fact I've known for awhile:

Your writing is at its best when it is your writing. That is, invented by you, and not relying on or using something someone else made. I've seen this quite a bit in my own fan fiction: the parts which have the least to do with Valhalla and the most to do with my own story are the best, while the parts which rely most on Valhalla and its story are the weakest. I'm not as interested in those parts as I am in the others, and I believe it comes across in my writing. It's for this reason that my origin stories (Final Battleground, Dilmir, and...

FFC #20 - HiS Completed

TGRF's Fan Fiction Chronicles - Entry 20

After a day of furious writing, I have completed HiS. This isn't just another fan fiction. This is a big milestone for me, as it is the longest thing, fan fiction or otherwise, which I have ever written.

It weighs in at 219 pages, 119,364 words, and 59 chapters. At long last, I am approaching novel standards. It was the subplots which contributed to the bulk.

Immediate thoughts after writing it: optimistic. I doubt I can ever top Red, but HiS should definitely be up there with the better things I've written. There's certainly some things I need to work on, which I'll address in TLFF, but I feel that HiS is a big improvement over my last fan fiction, ACoS.

Some of the improvements I'm looking forward to sharing in HiS include the dialogue, developed subcharacters, and realistic character reactions to each other. I tried to work a lot on that, since I was feeling that a lot of the dialogue and...

FFC #19 - CHALLENGE: Writing Characters

Posted September 14th, 2018 at 01:00 PM by TGRF
TGRF's Fan Fiction Chronicles - Entry 19

I wanted to give my readers a quick update on Horizon in Sight. The fiction is moving along. I've split part two in half, so there are now four parts in total. This is shaping up to be the longest thing I have ever written, fan fiction or otherwise.

Part three introduces a lot of new side characters, and upon writing them I've realized that they aren't quite as alive as I would like. My writing process is great for assigning character traits and working out what they need for the fiction and how they go together. In short, it deals with the technical side of things.

Unfortunately, the only way to make characters be alive - that is, actually feel like a real person - is to make them real in your mind, to the point where you automatically know how they would act and what they would say. And the only way to do that (at least properly) is just to spend time exploring them, usually through the use of writing...

FFC #18 - TLFF, Iteration 8

I'm currently going through the outline for part two of HiS, looking for weak transitions. Good thing too, because I'm finding a lot. While I've been fixing those however, TLFF (or The Last Fan Fiction) has slowly been resolving itself into a more defined shape in the back of my head.

For those of you who don't know, TLFF is the fan fiction I plan on writing after HiS. It will be my last fan fiction, although I intend to make it so that it contains several installments, and can be added to at will.

When last I mentioned TLFF, I made the grievous error of relating exactly what I thought it would be about. Clearly, I have not learned that my plans change faster than our cat running away from strangers.

For that reason, I am not going to tell you exactly what new form TLFF has taken. It isn't too different, as it still bears the title By Any Other Path, but the setting has been stabilized and the plot opened up wider.

While I won't tell...
