’Scaper of the Month
Grungebob
Author: The Grim Reaper’s Friend

We’re excited to bring you the first (since the relaunch) ’Scaper of the Month featuring an admin: Grungebob!

Profile

Who are you really?
My name is Jerry Hawthorne.

How old are you?
I’m 50.

What is your occupation?
I’m a full time board game designer at Plaid Hat Games.

What’s another board game/RPG you enjoy and why?
I really love HeroQuest (also by Hasbro MB and Stephen Baker).

What other interests do you have besides HeroScape?
I like contact juggling and yoga.

HeroScape

When and how did you get into HeroScape?
Back in Feb 2004 I discovered HeroScape while searching the inter-webs for gifts for my nephews.

What got you started in C3V?
We were making customs long before C3V. I think I made my first custom in early 2005 right as Wave 1 was releasing.

What is your favorite C3V unit?
I like those Cathar Spearmen. They look like a solid addition and appear like official units.

Describe your favorite HeroScape moment.
I snatched victory out of the jaws of defeat at a tournament by using Deadeye Dan as an emergency backup, and rolling a 20. I caught my opponent off-balance and all his order markers were wasted.

Is there anything you would change about the game (unit, rule, mechanic, etc.)?
I think an elegant set of rules for uncommons right from the beginning would have been appreciated.

What is your favorite aspect of HeroScape?
I like its ease of play, and its dynamism of environments, and its visual appeal.

Community

What do you enjoy most about Heroscapers.com?
Looking back, I would have to say its longevity.

Can you tell us how you became an admin?
The first Heroscape website was called Heroscape.net. I was an original admin on that site. I got asked because I was the most enthusiastic member of the forums. Later when the .net site went down on a C&D, I was admin on a dysfunctional stand-in site called HeroscapeHQ, then Colby and I spun off and created Heroscapers.com. I actually came up with the name of this site.

Is there any member of Heroscapers.com you’d really like to play against?
Probably Revdyer. I’d like to see him again.

Lie Detector

Three truths and a lie
  • I took 3rd place dancing the samba at a Latin dancing competition in Puerto Rico when I was in my 20s.
  • I once killed a king cobra in the jungles of Thailand and ate its bladder during a ritual of virility.
  • I helped design the entire Star Wars universe for the never released HeroScape Star Wars edition.
  • I’ve driven across the US on a motorcycle twice with less than $100 in my pocket.

Last Month’s Lie (Dad_Scaper)
  • I’ve participated in the Rehoboth Beach Lifeguard Olympics.
  • As a lawyer, I’ve won a case before the Supreme Court of the United States.
  • I’ve played to a draw against an international grandmaster in a game of chess.
  • I’ve directed tournaments for the following games: chess, Heroscape, Magic the Gathering, and Diplomacy.

Jim indicated he was up for the questions, but hasn't been on since. The deadline change gives me some extra time if I want it, so I'm going to take it and give Jim more time to come back. The next article should arrive on the 23rd with the new deadline, rather than the 14th.
