'Scaper of the Month - August 2017

Posted August 17th, 2017 at 05:05 PM by HS Codex

’Scaper of the Month
Son of Arathorn
Author: The Grim Reaper’s Friend

Our regular contributor for this series, Fi Skirata, hasn’t been heard from for several months now, prompting me to take over the ’Scaper of the Month articles. Tornado, the last ’Scaper of the month, named ollie as the next choice. However, ollie never replied to my message, so I have instead selected Son of Arathorn as the next ’Scaper of the month.

Profile:

Who are you really?
A philosopher-in-training.

How old are you?
Twenty-one.

What is your occupation?
I’m a full-time student, entering my senior year of college in Santa Fe, New Mexico, where I study everything from ancient Greek theatre to Faraday’s notes on electromagnetism.

What other interests do you have?
Baseball (I’ve been a Chicago Cubs fan since I was 4), writing (both for school and for pleasure), acting (whenever I get a chance), and running down mountainsides.

What’s another board game/RPG you enjoy and why?
War of the Ring. I took the plunge a couple summers ago and spent an obscene amount of money on this board game, and I’ve never enjoyed anything so much (heresy, I know). I love it because it deals with my favorite fictional universe (I’m a lifelong Tolkien fan), while giving you and your friends the freedom to shape the story yourselves. Every time you sit down to play, you and your friends are reenacting or rewriting one of the foundations of modern fantastic literature, and it never plays out the same way twice.

HeroScape:

When and how did you get into HeroScape?
When I was in the 4th grade, I went over to a friend’s house after school, and saw a Rise of the Valkyrie set sitting on the table. The thing that really grabbed my attention was that the game allowed you to construct battlefields with so much freedom. I saved up, went halvsies on a master set with my little brother, and the rest is history.

I know you’re fairly involved in the customs scene, so what got you started with creating customs?
I found the HeroScapers forums when I was in high school, and the first thing to grab my attention was the plethora of custom threads at the time. Sertorious and Typhon2222 were cranking out cards, the SoV and C3V projects were getting their respective balls rolling, and people like Rocktroll, Soundwarp SG-1 and Grishnakh were creating masterpieces with plastic and paint. Once I saw all the amazing stuff being made, I had to try it for myself.

Do you have a favorite custom unit (yours or someone else’s)?
I’m gonna cheat here, and pick two, one from outside Valhalla Customs, and one produced by C3V. I love dok’s Nidhog; I think it’s about as close to a Valkrill dragon as you’ll find anywhere. And I think Van Nessing is just about the coolest stand-alone hero in the game.

Community:

What do you enjoy most about Heroscapers.com?
The collaboration. Whether it’s custom creation, terrain modification, writing fan-fiction, we all couldn’t do what we do, as well as we do it, if we were doing it alone. I think having so many people to draw inspiration from, to bounce ideas off of, and to offer encouragement to, is a huge part of what makes this site so good.

Describe your favorite HeroScape moment.
My room in sophomore year of college turned into a game room for myself and three other residents in the dorm, one of whom was the R.A. We probably spent as much time playing 2 on 2 or free-for-all games during a semester as we did studying. It’s not really a moment, but it was a weird, wild run of games. If you want one moment out of that stretch, the R.A. lost a full-health Charos to Cyprien’s Chilling Touch on two consecutive rolls of 20. Dice were thrown.

Is there any member of Heroscapers.com you’d really like to play against?
Dad_Scaper. I hear he runs a mean tournament.

Lie Detector:

Three Truths and a Lie
  • I can read ancient Greek, French, Arabic, and Elvish.
  • I have an irrational hatred of cows. Well, I think it’s rational hatred, but people I trust tell me it’s not.
  • I once taught a high school class on the fictional history of Middle-Earth.
  • I’ve been smacked full in the face while standing in front of a crowd of 350 people.

Last Month’s Truth (Tornado)
  • I never fake the funk on a nasty dunk.
  • I have a total of 22 screws and a plate holding my forearm and ankle together.
  • I am an arm wrestling champ.
  • I played Magic: The Gathering when it was released the first time at Gen Con.

Closing :

What message do you have for the ’Scaper community?
Don’t be afraid to try your hand at something new. You’ll never get good if you’re not willing to suck for a while.

Whom do you pick for the next ’Scaper of the month?
I’m pretty sure Dad_Scaper was a ’scaper of the month back in the day, though if he hasn’t been, I choose him. Dude deserves it. If D_S has gone already, I choose Kinseth.

I apologize for the lateness. I just now realized that I accidentally posted this on my personal blog, rather than the Codex blog. My deepest apologies.

We are pleased to bring back the 'Scaper of the Month Articles. Dad_Scaper was interviewed back in the day for a ''Scaper of the Week, but we've decided that since it was a long time ago - and since we've basically reworked the Codex - it can't hurt to interview him again.
