C3V Wave 21 – Pack 1

DISCLAIMER: This is not official. This is a fan made custom project.

C3V Public Announcements Thread
This is where you can go to get started with C3V (Classic Customs Creators of Valhalla).
This thread lists all the units C3V has released: C3V Books of Index.

C3V brings you Wave CV8, otherwise known as:

WAVE 21!!!

Curse of Stormtorn Peak

Pack 1
HEROES OF A BYGONE AGE
Yi Feng - Vydar
Chen Tang - Jandar
Zhen Yuan - Utgar
Master Lao Xin - Ullar
Locksley - Ullar

We kick off a new year and a new wave with Heroes of a Bygone Age, a pack of 5 unique heroes from Earth's history.

=======================

The four monks in action.

Yi Feng

PDF

The first hero is Yi Feng, a monk who fights for Vydar. Yi Feng practices the Iron Shirt discipline of kung fu, focusing his energy to harden his body against blows and make it easier for him to retaliate.

The figure used for this unit is a Heroclix figure. The figure name is Arashi #31, 32, 33 from the Indy set.

=======================

Chen Tang

PDF

Our second monk in the pack is Chen Tang, fighting for Jandar. His signature technique, alternately called Cinnabar Palm or Quivering Palm, is known as "the blow of deferred death." A Quivering Palm strike makes its effect felt long after the blow was delivered.

The figure used for this unit is a Heroclix figure. The figure name is Boon #40, 41, 42 from the Indy set.

=======================

Zhen Yuan

PDF

Zhen Yuan has two fighting techniques at his disposal, making him a dynamic warrior. First is Eagle Claw, using animal instincts to take advantage of his opponent's weaknesses. Combine this with his Whirlwind Assault and sworn hatred for his enemies, the Japanese, it is easy to see why Utgar is glad to summon Zhen Yuan.

The figure used for this unit is a Heroclix figure. The figure name is Shang Chi #12 from the Avengers set.

=======================

Master Lao Xin

PDF

Master Lao Xin, the final monk of the pack, was summoned by Ullar. He leads all monks, across all generals, as their Sifu: a master, teacher, or leader. A master of many martial arts, Lao Xin's attacks never miss their target.

The figure used for this unit is a Heroclix figure. The figure name is Seven Deadly Brothers #005 from the Superman set.

=======================

Locksley with some released and unreleased friends.

Locksley

PDF

To continue our budding Merry Men faction, Ullar has summoned Locksley. Whether this is a given name or merely indicative of his origin, no one can be sure. But with his Brigands, and with more Merry Men on the way, Locksley leads his band in the purest form of vigilante justice: he steals from the rich, and gives to the poor.

The figure used for this unit is a DnD Minis figure from the Blood War set. Its model number and name is 16/Free League Ranger.

We have lots more goodies coming your way in 2018 and beyond: pirates, orcs, tree people, Native Americans, WWI soldiers, and more! Send a PM to superfrog, Dysole, or Kinseth if you are interested in playtesting. We couldn't do it without you.

I had the same thought as P_J Keller, I didn't recognize the friendly archer to the far right of Locksley.

I agree with you to an extent, obfuscatedhippo, as Ullar has received notably less support from C3V/SoV than any other general. It certainly would've been nice to see all of the monks serve him, but I'm not sure if that entirely lines up with what we saw before the game was cancelled.

Some factions like the knights and Samurai had all of their heroes under the same general, but like you said, we already had a precedent of mostly standalone themes of heroes getting released under each general, whether it was dragons, cowboys, or ninjas.

Since Master Win Chiu Woo serves Aquilla, I'm inclined to believe that if more monks were released, they would follow this pattern. Of course, I don't remember ever seeing a faction leader for these units that made armies between them possible until C3V came along, but seeing a ton of different generals in an army there doesn't bother me any more than it does when looking at the elementals with Kurrok.

That all said, I wouldn't mind seeing another monk squad to give these guys some more variety and another monk hero for the remaining generals (although it might be a bit hard to find one for Valkrill).

@kmgenius , good luck hunting. We announce figures from time to time and we really encourage people to get the minis when we announce them, instead of waiting. Which I know is not any kind of help for people who came to the game, or to our part of it, late. Some of these guys, particularly in this pack, have been in our pipeline a *long* time.

I offer the following tips:
(1) Be patient looking for the right minis, if you want them. Use proxies while you wait.
(2) Go to our mini announcement thread, and look for the minis that you don't have, and see if you can get them at a reasonable price. If they're in there, we're going to be using them.

Good luck!

@kmgenius I'd check eBay. They're all available there for under 5 bucks.

Excellent work! Thank you. My son's favorite unit is the Shaolin Monks. Time to see how strong they are with this new wave!

Great job!
Construcive comment: does anyone else think the monks are underpriced? Hair shirt, whirlwind assualt seem like solid powers. Maybe it just feels that way, I haven't playtested them. Obviously they have been playtested, was there agreement on the point cost?

We tend not to reveal too much about the details of conversations we had about specific units. However, a unit doesn't get released without being approved by a majority of Playtesters and then a super-majority of all C3V/SoV members who can see the playtesting discussions (these aren't the only votes along the way). So you can be pretty sure we're confident with where they're at.

But that doesn't mean we're foolproof. Maybe you'll craft an unexpectedly top-tier army from these units and have fun crushing your friends (and enemies)! Please let us know how it goes.

Glad you like the look of them.

The monks are pretty good. In the right situations, they can be very good. But they suffer from the fact that they only get one attack per turn if your opponent plays smart. Iron shirt is good, yes, but not so good that it makes up for his low defense and low life. Whirlwind can easily be avoided if the opponent knows it's coming.

But I think Yi Feng is a great 60 point filler, worth including even in non-monk armies.

Iron Shirt offers no protection, so I question how good it actually is and as stated above Whirlwind Assault is easily avoided most of the time.

I am not privy to what goes on in C3V buy my understanding is that they playtest extensively and I would be surprised if they ever let one slip past the goalie.

Yeah thanks guys. You're right, you can spend the same points and have a lot more attacks. Thanks for taking me behind the curtain.
