What I Wish Hero-Scape Had

Posted September 15th, 2011 at 02:26 AM by R!SK
I'm very green in the realm of HeroScape. I've only bought one Set(Swamp, which I think my friend lost), also I own some castle expansion sets and a few packs of creatures.

Yet I think I've experienced enough, with the aid of some friend's collections to grow a few opinions of this game.

I love to play HeroScape, I love even more making the maps. As an (amature, with only so many pieces) map designer, I try to prioritize pieces, use most of them and most of all make something that looks good and plays well.

Yet, no matter if I'm playing with a friend's collection that's large, I find myself to be very vertically challenged, with the drastic exception of the castle set pieces.

This makes me think of Legos, in Legos its easy to build horz. or vertically, and I think the big difference being the shape of the individual pieces being more square/cube than the flatter heroscape tiles.

So I'd really like/wish HeroScape had made double, triple tall tiles. Legos had flat pieces too, 3 stacked would make a normal block.

Legos though didn't make everything out of the flat ones they chose the thicker ones and hence you had a toy that was easier to play horz. and vertically.

I guess I imagine these taller 'blocks' to be double tiles, mostly, but including other ones would be nice and it would go a long way to creating mountains and hills more easily. A lot of what is inside a mountain is bulk and you wouldn't need so much ...plastic in there if they made these.

Thanks for listening to my thoughts. Please comment.

Height in Scape building is deceptive. You can make cool setups using lots of height, but they usually don't play well! Small to moderate levels are best for game play. And don't forget access for your two space characters...

You can use those castle pieces to help build extreme heights- they easily go underneath terrain too. I understand- sometimes we all need mountains.

I built a cool looking big map one time that had a fortress built into the side of a mountain. It worked pretty well actually, I just left a few gaps in the side to minimize piece usage and taped construction paper over them. Improvisation goes a long way.

Oh, and made the top removable so it could come off to move pieces inside the castle. The castle was pretty small, and so are my hands, so I didn't have to lift the top off very much, I just reached through the door.

I saw a YouTube video some time ago of someone that used the doll house tables that you get when you order a pizza to add some cheap height to his maps.
