Brown, a new beginning.
"It is not the accumulation of extraneous knowledge, but the realization of the self within, that constitutes true progress."
- Okakura Kakuzo
For reference my old belt system worked as follows.
White-yellow-green stripe-Green-blue stripe-blue-red stripe-red-black stripe-black, and then nine degrees of black belt.
Well I have been out of Martial Arts for almost two years now, having practiced Tae-Kwon-Do for 4 years and reaching the rank of Blue Belt. After the economy crashed my old school was forced to close, leaving me and a lot of others out on streets. After that I sort of fell out of it.
I had been researching some other schools in the area, and had planned on visiting one last weekend. I ended up spending the day with the nasty cold, so that didn't pan out.
I got to visit the school today, and spent a good three hours trying out the different lessons that they offer. I was very impressed with the students and instructors there, and I think I'm going to stick with them.
The belt system there is different, but they are letting keep my rank even after I've been out of it for so long. I am now a brown belt. I'm not exactly sure how the system there works yet, so I still have some research to do.
I really enjoyed practicing with them, and I'm really, really glad that I got back into Tae-Kwon-Do. I hadn't actually realized how out of practice I was though. Right now I can barely move my legs, but it was definitely worth it.

Congrats on getting back into the arts. Personally, I prefer Judo: judon't know if I have a knife, judon't know if I have a gun.

Very funny, Filthy! I, too, congratulate you, Chardar. I promoted to Sandan last October, and I started Karate 14 years ago, at the age of 46. It is never too late to start, or to resume, "polishing the mirror."

My son's taekwondo school uses the system of your new school (white, yellow, high yellow, orange, high orange, green, high green, blue, high blue, brown, advanced brown, red, super red, junior black, black, and then the various degrees).
My son just recently earned his junior black belt. That was a pretty tough belt test which included 5 forms, nomenclature, sparring, and breaking 3 boards using advanced kicks. Best of luck to you as you continue your studies. |
