The Holochamber

Posted July 23rd, 2010 at 06:21 PM by AliasQTip
I recently created a scenario for my Esenwein Castle Battlefield that allowed players to score points for knocking off zombies (and other figures too). It was a lot of fun. There wasn’t any storyline to it – just destroy figures, score points. I wanted to put a storyline to it and incorporate another idea I’ve toyed with for some time – summoned tiles.

Here’s the story: Deep within Vydar’s stronghold, the secret underground city beneath Montfre Manor, is a virtual reality chamber (maybe many) that he uses to train and maintain his troops. The room can simulate virtually any type of terrain found in Valhalla.

So in the scenario players will score points for opponent’s figures they destroy and get to place terrain tiles at the end of each round. What’s more, destroyed figures will come back or be replaced with newly drafted units. The game goes on this way for 7 rounds; the player with the highest points wins!

Now, my battlefield is a rather boring looking hexagonal map; but it’s supposed to look unnatural and plain. It’s just an open field that the players will build upon. What the map will look like at the end of the game is up to the players to decide. My scenario will accommodate up to 3 players giving them the opportunity to place 18 terrain tiles each. And, all of this with just the Rise of the Valkyrie Master Set!

What I really like about this scenario is that it’s perfect for trying out new figures because they keep coming back again and again (or for playtesting custom figures for that matter). It also gives people who may have never sat down and built their own map a blank canvas to work with and a built in scenario to boot. I personally will be using this to playtest some Transformers customs I’m currently working on.

It’s also adaptable. I’ve just used a RotV but you could grab tiles from the other large expansions as well. LAVA anyone?

Be looking for this one very soon. I just need a name for the scenario (suggestions) and to tweak a bit of the language. It also features a cameo appearance by Major Q1. I’m still working on a back story for him and this fits nicely. Since Q1 is really me it seems only fitting that he designs maps and scenarios too.

For the Fans…
Esenwein Castle was completed recently with three scenarios. I’d really appreciate some feedback if anyone played the 3 player scenario, A Light through Yonder Window Breaks. That one was largely untested and I’d like to know how it worked out for you.

The two Adventure Packs I created (Cathedral & Graveyard and Factory Windows & Doors) have really taken off. Adventure packs can be used to expand and add theme to your existing terrain. Definitely worth checking out.

Very, very interesting concept. When do you think you will have it done and posted by? I am eager to try it out.

Tomorrow afternoon, perhaps. I'm off to bed now; got work in the morning. I hate working Saturdays. Like I said in the blog, it's mostly done. If you've subscribed to my maps thread you'll know as soon as it's posted. Good night all.

Scenario Name suggestion:

Grindhog Day
Groundhog Daze

...just trying to say something about having to do it six times with the destroyed units returning...

Just played the scenario with my wife and we thoroughly enjoyed it. (Although I did whoop her, for once.) I'm putting the final touches on it now and hopefully will upload it later this evening. (Maybe get in one more game first. ) The final score was 480 to 220 and we went through a whopping 18 different units! I can only imagine what a three player game would look like. Crazy and hectic, I guess. Here's what the map looked like after our game:
