Bomb Threat

Posted April 16th, 2010 at 08:53 AM by Sylvano the Wasabus
Yesterday was a busy day at work.

Then around 10:30am the police phoned us, saying someone had claimed that a bomb had been planted in our building. They said they couldn’t tell us what to do- we could evacuate or just ignore it. They were sending a team over either way.

No one seemed to know what to do until I spoke. My job is not worth dying for.

We evacuated – there were only about twenty people in the building. I cleared them out and locked the place down. Then we stood in the parking lot waiting for the police to show up.

It was a gorgeous day to be outside. My teeny office has no windows and for once I could actually see the day and breathe real air.

We phoned the big bosses with someone’s cell phone outside and they arrived after a bit in their SUVs. They did not seem to want to take the bomb threat seriously. But they stayed away from the building.

After a very long time an enormous black SUV pulled up with four enormous policemen inside. Why does everyone have a huge SUV?

The big bosses rushed forward and claimed to be in charge and answered all of the questions the policemen asked. We were standing further back, listening to the inaccuracies and outright lies. The big bosses don’t know the building at all.

The police sent in a search team. Someone who knew the building had to go too, to show the way, unlock doors and identify suspicious things. Where did the big bosses disappear to all of a sudden? I went with them. Not because I’m a hero, or wanted to show off. Somehow I knew all along that it was going to be me. I was suddenly the only available candidate.

The cops were gentlemen. They were easygoing and light hearted and they joked politely with each other. But they were also very professional- they had little flashlights and we left no area of the building unchecked. They told me “this city has been too quiet- it’s due.”

We didn’t find anything. We searched the outside of the building next, and then the policemen got back in their big black SUV and left. The big bosses told us to write a very detailed report. Then they congratulated each other on how well they’d handled things and got in their big SUVs and left. We went back into the building and returned to work. The whole thing only took about two hours.

I didn’t feel brave or scared or anything while we were searching. It just seemed like something that had to be done.

But now that it’s over and two hours have passed, I’m wiped out. I have a huge headache and feel sick to my stomach. I’m exhausted and my leg hurts. If I wasn’t so tired I’d be mad.

I’m not mad at the person who called in the bomb threat. Who hasn’t felt like that? The cops were great. I’m mad at the big bosses. Why do they think they’re better than the rest of us? Because they get paid more? I’ve met the big bosses many times and they have never impressed me as people. Most of them are selfish bullies.

And so, like everything in my life, this somehow relates to Scape. I am not the best Scape player. I tend to make quick impulsive decisions that are often long term mistakes in games. I wonder- do big bosses play better? Is that what they have- a bigger view of the overall situation? After all they sent a little nobody, me, into the building because I’m not that big a loss to them. I’m probably only worth ten points.

I’ll admit that in scape my great synergy heroes are always in the front with the troops. They get targeted and die. And I lose. So I am defined. Can I change?

Note to bomber: next time claim the bomb is in the big bosses building. Please?

Seriosly, if the big boss guys are so great and proud and they are always so proud of themselves why the hell do they never do anything.

Glad to know nobody blew up.

After the Columbine shootings my high-school went on high-alert. Not long after we too had a bomb scare. A small mysterious package wrapped in brown paper appeared in the middle of main hallway - with a time written on it... 9:30. The school was evacuated to the stadium for hours while the police sent in a high-tech bomb robot to disarm it. Turns out it wasn't a bomb after all, just some kid's ice-pack from the nurse's office. She had written 9:30 on it so it could serve as his hall pass.

Alias, that is absolutely hilarious! I can imagine that whole situation in my head and it is just so funny to think about. A big ice pack, wrapped in those cardboard-like paper towels that schools use, being mistaken for a bomb.

I bet there were some really angry administrators and officers after that one. Probably wasn't too funny then, but in retrospect you can't help but laugh at it.

Just makes me think, though; what teenager has the money, contacts, and ability to make a bomb, let alone obtain the materials?
And, why bomb a school? Because, really, there's nothing really worth bombing in a school. Sure, you'll get out of school. Until they transport you to another school, and likely to prison when they figure out it was you who did it.

(How many times have a school actually been bombed, anyway? I've always been curious of this, though I doubt it'll be anywhere above one digit...)

When I was in college back in the Seventies, we had a bomb threat where I worked--as an intern National Park Service Park Ranger at the Statue of Liberty, here in NYC. Of course, who was at the info desk when the threat came in: me!

So I played the evacuation announcement tape, and then watched all the careful procedures being carried out by the more senior uniformed and trained personnel around me. The last order I received from a supervisor was: "Man the desk until we tell you to leave." So I sat there and watched as the last of our uniformed crew left the building.

When the all clear was sounded, they came back and saw with an astonished look on their face that I was still there, and had been during the whole thing. No one had ever told me to leave...

...and no one ever said anything about it to me, either.

Yeah, why does everyone have big SUV's?

I understand that police need space to store their equipment but what the heck are the bosses storing? The McGullikutty Files? The new gold watch that's too expensive to wear in case it bumps into something and shatters?

I've been there as well Wasabus and didn't think to much about it either until afterwards. Then I took a day off, just in case some nut job screwed up a date.
