Team Wonder Woman vs Team Thor continues, despite efforts to contact the police…

Bob: “Once again, Wonder Woman stinks at initiative. By the way, David. Do you know anyone named Ernie?”

David: “Ernie? No, I don’t think so. Why?”

Bob: “He sent you a package.”

David: “Oooo, I love getting packages! Just set it to the side, and I’ll open it after the battle!”

Bob: “Ok. Abe Sapien spends 5 Lore to play Terrified on Wonder Woman. He’ll roll 3 dice, and each shield will move her 1 space. Zilch! That was certainly the opposite of productive.”

David: “Have you forgotten about that Chain Lightning?”

Bob: “Good point. Ok, Abe is level with Wolverine and fires his Pistol Marksman Special. 1sk/2blanks vs 2sh. 4 Lore, 2 Cards.”

David: “Wolverine spends 5+3 Lore to play Mass Might, which gives Wolverine +1 attack in Melee. He takes height on Abe and strikes down. And I think we’re going to need a tissue: 1sk/2blanks vs 1sh/1blank. I think these dice have been soaking in Burt’s Beer. 6 Lore, 2 Cards.”

Bob: “War Machine begins to take a turn, but Wolverine spends 4 Lore to play False Orders. That allows Wolverine to swap the opponent's revealed Order Marker with an Unrevealed Order Marker, and the figure that receives the just revealed Marker must take the turn instead. Wolverine gives War Machine's marker to Psycho-Man, and Psycho-Man gives his unrevealed marker to War Machine. Psycho-Man now takes the turn. Dazed and confused, Psycho-Man steps forward. He then targets Wolverine for Fear, which will move the affected figure 4 spaces. The d20 is 11, which is shy of the 15 needed. 7 Lore, 2 Cards.”

David: “Wolverine strikes down at Abe. That’s more like it! 5sk vs 2sh/0sk/1blank = KO! Abe Sapien is now a box of frozen fish sticks. 4 Lore, 1 Card.”

Bob: “War Machine is finally up, unless Team WW has anything else up their sleeves.”

David: “Nope!”

Bob: “War Machine spends 2 Lore to play Eagle Eye, which adds +3 to ranged combat!”

David: “Ouch! +3 for only 2 Lore???”

Sock Puppet: “Afraid so, guys. Ranged units in Battlelore tend to be more scarce and weaker.”

Bob: “War Machine is certainly not weak! Ok, he can’t see Wolverine from his current position, and Wonder Woman is out of LOS. War Machine decides to skip Wolverine for the moment and position himself to fire down at Wonder Woman. 4sk/1blank vs 2sh/2blanks. However, Wonder Woman’s Bullets and Bracelets ability allows her to reroll up to 5 dice that aren’t shields when attacked at range! So Wonder Woman has to return the 2 Lore she received from the blanks and rerolls. It’s the same result: 2sh/2blanks = 2w (4 left). 9 Lore, 2 Cards.”

David: “Wonder Woman flies over to War Machine to have a nice, long talk. She rolls the d20 for her Lasso of Truth, which is a 12. Success! Her Lasso allows her to move an adjacent figure to any other adjacent space, so she drags War Machine closer to ground level. She strikes down: 4sk vs 3sh/3sk = 1w (3 left) and 1 knockback space. War Machine plunges into the water. Wonder Woman spends 5 Lore to play Bonus Attack. Sock Puppet, help me out with this one.”

Sock Puppet: “Ready to assist, David! Battlelore allows mounted figures to make a bonus move and attack if the first strike destroys or causes the target to retreat. We’re treating knockback as a retreat. Now, we don’t have a Heroscape equivalent to Battlelore’s Pursuit Bonus Attack, so we’re only allowing it with a card such as this. So, Wonder Woman can moved down to engage War Machine and make a bonus attack! All attacks prompted by Lore Cards, including this and Backstab earlier, must be normal attacks and may not be used in conjunction with any special abilities other than for knockback use.”

David: “That was a mouthful. Ok, so Wonder Woman knocked War Machine back, and Bonus Attack allows Wonder Woman to engage him and make another attack. Ok, this strike is 3sk/2blanks vs 3sh/2sk/1blank. That knocks War Machine back one space, but War Machine takes no damage. 5 Lore, 1 Card.”

David: “Wonder Woman got initiative on her own this time. Wolverine gets the first Order Marker, though. He moves down to strike Psycho-Man, since War Machine is too far away. 2sk/1blank vs 2sh. Since Wolverine doesn’t wound Psycho-Man, that will trigger Psycho’s Doubt ability. That removes an unrevealed Order Marker from Wolverine’s card!”

Bob: “War Machine spends 4 Lore to play Magic Missiles, which gives him +2 attack if it’s ranged. He flies to a nice, high spot and fires down on Wonder Woman. 5sk vs 2sh/1blank. Wonder Woman rerolls the non-shields due to her Bracelets: 4sh = 1w (3 left). 7 Lore, 2 Cards.”

David: “Wonder Woman spends all 7 of her Lore to play Field Command. Sock Puppet: Help!!!”

Sock Puppet: “Ok, this is one of the cards that refers to ordering many or all of your units. That’s simply too much for Heroscape, so we’ll allow using cards such as this to grant one extra turn from another figure. That means Wonder Woman will take her turn, then Wolverine gets to take a turn. Again, Wolverine is confined to a normal attack due to being directed by a Lore Card.”

David: “Nice! Wonder Woman flies up to engage War Machine, but fails her Lasso roll. So she strikes up at him: 2sk/2blanks vs 3sh/4sk. 3 Lore, 2 Cards. Now Wolverine takes a special turn. He takes height and strikes down on Psycho-Man: 4sk/1blank vs 1sh/1sk/3blanks = 3 wounds (2 left). Wolverine doesn’t have Super Strength, but we’re playing with a modified knockback. So Psycho Man gets knocked back 3-1=2 spaces. Psycho-Man lands into the water and slams into an elevation change. Normally, that triggers a roll for knockback damage, but that doesn’t apply if the attacker doesn’t have the strength. Ok, that ends Wolverine’s turn, but no additional Lore or Cards are taken due to this turn not being from an Order Marker.”

Bob: “By the way, folks, we’ve been checking for non-Super Strength Knockback throughout this battle, but we’ll only report if any knockback takes place. Now, Psycho-Man steps out of the water and misses his Fear roll on Wolverine. So he strikes up at Wolverine: 2sk/1blank vs 1sh = 1w (6 left). 13 Lore, 2 Cards.”

David: “Wolverine loses the turn due to losing his Order Marker from Psycho-Man’s Doubt.”

Bob: “Thor spends all 13 Lore to play Assault! Socks, this card says all units are ordered with +1 attack. However, you said that an ability like this only grants one bonus turn. Right?”

Sock Puppet: “That’s correct, Bob.”

Bob: “Oooo! Ok, Thor takes his turn first. Thor lands next to Wolverine and strikes up at him with his +1 Assault bonus: 2sk/1blank vs 2sh/4sk. That was weak! 2 Lore, 2 Cards. Now War Machine will strike down at Wonder Woman with his +1 height and +1 Assault bonus. Since this is a Lore turn, War Machine must make a normal attack. 2sk/3blanks vs 3sh/2blanks.”

Bob: “War Machine strikes down at Wonder Woman. Wonder Woman spends 5 Lore to play First Strike. This allows Wonder Woman to attack first! Oh, boy! Before she rolls, War Machine spends 3 Lore to play Parry, which limits the number of attack dice to 2! Man, I love the back-and-forth of these Lore Cards! Ok, Wonder Woman makes her First Strike up at War Machine with a measly 2 dice: 1sk vs 2sh/1sk/4blanks. Not only did that block, but War Machine hit the Jackpot of 4 Lore from the blanks! That ends Wonder Woman’s First Strike, so War Machine continues with his attack down at Wonder Woman: 2sk/1blank vs 3sh/1blank. 7 Lore, 2 Cards.”

David: “Wolverine strikes down on Psycho-Man. He considered his Berserker Rage Special to strike both Psycho-Man and Thor, but he doesn’t want to lose an Order Marker from Psycho-Man’s Doubt. It’s 3sk/2blanks. Psycho-Man spends 3 Lore to play Backstab. We’ll roll 1 die for each skull, and each blank will reduce a skull and deliver a wound to Wolverine. No blanks, so Wolverine is safe! Psycho-Man defends with 1sh/2blanks = KO! Wolverine heals his wound. 5 Lore, 2 Cards. Bob, we’ve got a tight battle!”

Bob: “That’s correct. We have Wonder Woman (3 wounds) and Wolverine against Thor and War Machine (1 wound). Thor wants to take down Wolverine and strikes up. Wolverine spends 1+3 Lore to play Stone Skin which will ignore 1 skull for wounding purposes. 4-1sk/1blank vs 3sh/3sk = 0w and 1 knockback space. That’ll knock Wolverine into the water. 7 Lore, 2 Cards.”

David: “Wonder Woman fails her Lasso roll on War Machine, so strikes up. War Machine spends 5 Lore to Scatter, which allows War Machine to move back and end Wonder Woman’s turn.”

Bob: “Thor takes the hill and strikes down at Wolverine. 5sk/1blank vs 1sh/3sk/1blank = 4w (3 left) and 2 knockback spaces. Wolverine slams into the tree directly behind him and takes another wound (2 left). 4 Lore, 2 Cards.”

David: “Wolverine climbs out of the water to reduce knockback risk and strikes up at Thor. 4sk/2blanks vs 4sh/2blanks. Wolverine makes a Rapid Healing roll, but doesn’t heal!!! 6 Lore, 2 Cards.”

Bob: “I think Team Thor has the advantage, but Team Wonder Woman certainly turned things around in the past 3 rounds. I can’t wait to see who prevails!”

Uh, about that…

Have you ever seen someone play a song by rubbing their fingers along the rims of wine glasses? Each glass is filled with a different volume of water, which causes the glass to emit a different pitch. The sound is quite beautiful.

I had a birthday this past Friday, so I decided to go to Red Lobster last night. Since I went by myself and asked for a table for one, the staff sat me in a corner table facing the wall so I wouldn’t scare the other customers who actually had friends. So there I am, sitting and munching on a soggy piece of stale bread when I heard the wait staff sing, “Happy Birthday.” I turned around, but they were singing to somebody else. One of the waitresses saw me looking and rushed over.

“Sir, you’re supposed to face the wall.”

“I know. I heard you singing, and I thought it was for me. I recently had a birthday.”

“Oh, congratulations! That means you’ll have one year less to live!”

I faced the wall and continue munching on that bread. Then I thought about those musical wine glasses. So I went to the front of the restaurant and wheeled the lobster tank to the kitchen, filled 8 vats with water, and placed them onto the stove. You may know that when you drop a lobster in boiling water, it emits a squeal. So by setting each vat of hot water to a different temperature, I thought I could cause each lobster to emit a specific pitch based on the vat I dropped it into. It worked like a charm, and I played myself "Happy Birthday!"

The rest of the restaurant heard my melody. Tears well in their eyes, and they gave me a standing ovation. I decided to play an encore with "I Ran" from A Flock of Seagulls. Then I received my bill, and tears welled in my eyes.

Long story short, I had to sell one of my kidneys.

Hopefully, I’ll be able to return to the battle tonight.

Team Wonder Woman vs Team Thor, and what is in that package that Ernie sent David?

David: “Wolverine takes the lead at the top of Round 9. He slashes up at Thor. Does anybody need to play a Lore Card?”

Wonder Woman: “Not me.”

Wolverine: “Nope.”

Thor: “No.”

War Machine: “I’m all sweaty, and I have to pee!”

David: “You have 3 life left, so hold it in. Ok, Wolverine. You’ve got the attack! 3sk/1blank vs 2sh/1blank = 1w (6 left). 9 defense dice is a lot to tear through. Wolverine rolls for Rapid Healing Factor 7, and adds +5 to the roll for his wound markers. It’s 15+5=20, which allows him to heal 2 wounds! (4 left). 8 Lore, 3 Cards.”

Bob: “While you weren’t looking, David, War Machine took a leak behind one of the trees. He flies over to the hill on the other side of the trees of Wonder Woman and fires his Gatling Gun Special down at Wolverine. Remember: this is 4 attacks of 2. 2sk vs 2sh/2blanks. War Machine has been hitting his skulls with that gun. Let’s see how the other three attacks fare. 1sk vs 3sh/1blank. Once again, War Machine is simply feeding Lore Tokens to the opponent. 0sk vs 1sh. 0sk vs 2sh/1blank. I think War Machine ran out of ammo. 9 Lore, 2 Cards.”

David: “Wonder Woman spends 6 Lore to play Stolen Orders. Sock Puppet, we need your help!”

Sock Puppet (laughs): “No problem! This is one of those cards that affect Command Cards, which Heroscape doesn’t use. However, I’ve been treating Order Markers as a type of Command Card. So this card will allow the turn to be taken by a figure who already has a revealed Order Marker instead of the figure who revealed the current Order Marker. So Wonder Woman will forfeit her turn, and she will let Wolverine take the turn based on his Order Marker 1.”

David: “Neat! Wolverine holds and strikes –“

Bob: “David, Thor will spend 5 Lore to play Magic Web. That returns the figure to its original position, which won’t change due to Wolverine holding position. It also immediately ends Wolverine’s turn.”

David: “The Lore giveth, and the Lore taketh away! Magic Web only prevents further movement or battling, but all end of turn abilities still apply. First, Wolverine rolls for his Rapid Healing Factor 7. It’s 9+3=11, which heals 1 (5 left). 7 Lore, 3 Cards.”

Bob: “Thor strikes down at Wolverine. 4sk/1blank vs 2sh/2sk/1blank = 2 wounds (3 left) and 2 knockback spaces. Wolverine slams into an elevation change and takes another wound (2 left). 7 Lore, 2 Cards.”

David: “Wolverine climbs out of the water and pivots around Thor to prevent further knockback risk. He strikes up. 2sk/2blanks vs 2sh. Rapid Healing = 1+5 = fails! 11 Lore, 3 Cards.”

Bob: “Thor strikes down at Wolverine. Wolverine spends 1 Lore to play Agility, which will block one wound. 6-1sk vs 1sh/3sk/1blank = KO! 9 Lore, 2 Cards. Wolverine certainly put up a valiant struggle.”

Round 10

David: “Wonder Woman spends 6+3 Lore to play Mists of Terror. This causes opponent’s figures to move back 1 space and make a panic check. Sock Puppet, let me see if I can figure this out on my own. For each blank the attacker rolls, the defender moves back 1 space and rolls 1 die for each space moved back. For each additional blank rolled, the figure takes a wound.”

Sock Puppet: “Give that man a cigar! One important note, you have to resolve the attack first, then make your retreat and panic check.”

David: “Thanks, but I don’t smoke. I do drink tea, though. Hint! Ok, Wonder Woman lands next to War Machine and strikes. 5sk/1blank vs 2sh/4sk. That’s enough for a KO without needing the knockback or panic checks. And I forgot to check Wonder Woman’s Lasso of Truth before she attacked. 11 Lore, 2 Cards.”

Bob: “It’s now a showdown between Wonder Woman with 3 wounds, and Thor with 1 wound. Thor spends 7 Lore to play Portal, which allows him to move a figure 4 spaces in any direction. He places Wonder Woman off the hill. Thor lands on the other side of her and strikes down. 6sk vs 1sh/1blank, and that’s a KO to win the game!”

David: “Bob, that was such a fun game. Sock Puppet, I don’t think we could’ve done it without your help. Those Lore Cards were certainly fun, though we did have to do some on-the-fly translations. I can also appreciate the issues with turn interruption, as things did get a bit confusing when both sides were tossing Lore Cards back and forth.”

tick…tick…tick…tick…

Bob: “I think it was a successful experiment, David. This might actually inspire someone to create cards with powers that are more compatible with Heroscape. And this was yet another fantastic battle with Matt Helm’s superb customs. We’ll have to do this again.”

David: “Oh, you know we’ll want to return to the HelmAVerse.”

tick…tick…tick…tick…

David: “Do you hear something?”

Bob: “It’s coming from that package.”

David: “My package! I almost forgot! Oh, boy! I can’t wait to see what Ernie sent me! I can’t wait to find out who the heck Ernie is!”

tick…tick…tick…tick…

Bob: “Uh, David. Maybe you shouldn’t open that. That ticking’s getting louder.”

Tick…Tick…TICK…TICK…TICK!

David: “I love packages! Oh, boy, this is so exciting!”

I was worried that it would be too confusing for the reader to follow, and parts of it might have been. It was certainly fun to try.

After that great read with the easily understandable action cards, I'm sure "Ernie" feels bad about the package... then again, "Ernie" never feels that bad, feelings get in the way when you're a proffessional.

Great job as always David, and thanks again for breathing a little life into the HelmAverse. When I share these custom card ideas there are two things I really look forward to. First is to see how glorious a job A3n can do with creating the imagery. Second is to see/hear when somebody actually takes them for a ride and gives them life. I sure hope you get half the pleasure from playing as I do just reading about it.

The next round of Burt's is on me.
