What DCI means to Heroscape

Posted October 8th, 2008 at 11:45 PM by CheddarLimbo
With National Heroscape just a week and a half away, there's lots of excitement in the air. Recently there was a little controversy about Wizards and their support (or lack thereof) of the event itself. Coming off of a less than impressive Gencon presence, Wizards initial reaction to not offer any sort of support for NHSD left a bad taste in many mouths.

Fortunately, things change. And now Wizards is going to support NHSD in two very important ways. There will be prizes, Skahens mostly, but there is another kind of support - DCI Sanctioning.

I was registered with DCI for a number of years when I played Magic: The Gathering, and when I heard Wizards was going to put Heroscape into the program, I got very excited. DCI, for those that aren't already familiar, is a method by which event participants can register themselves and enter into a ranking system based on tournament results. It's a great way to see where you stand in your region, and it also lets you keep track of your tourney standings and record. In addition, it's a way to increase the legitimacy of the tournament setting we love so much. As great as our private tournaments are, we suffer a little from the lack of formal structure right now.

Now, I've heard a number of people venting and frustrated about this idea and frankly, I don't get it. Some people claim that DCI is an elitist club, or that it only benefits the most hardcore players. Others take exception to how the organization ranks players, or cite obtuse rules, or flaws in the system.

Maybe DCI is some of those things, maybe not. But whatever else DCI is, we should recognize that first and foremost it is a way to clearly and decisively show Wizards that people love and play their game.

There's been doomsaying a plenty this year about the End Times of Heroscape. And how, with the Wizards transition, we need to make sure that our favorite hex-based addiction doesn't become the forgotten red-headed step child of the Mother of all Gaming Companies. I can't think of a better way to show Wizards how much we love their game then by filling out that little card and registering each time we play in a sanctioned tourney. It shows Wizards that people want to see their product, and will pay to do so. And repeated attendance shows a long term commitment.

These are the kinds of things that decision-makers at Wizards want to know. And this solid documented information will allow them to make the right decisions for their company and for us the fans.

So this NHSD, don't poo-poo the DCI - sign up! Write Wizards a little love-letter each time you fill that card out and get it punched. It's your way to tell Wizards "I love this game, and I want to keep playing it for a long time!"

Take it easy,
-CL

Didn't GB announce that it wouldn't be set-up in time for NHSD?

Do you have any handy source where I can read about the innards of the DCI ranking system? I have a particular interest in this as I'd like to know whether to continue to maintain the NERV system, which does pretty much the same thing. I'm worried that I'm going to be one of those that "take exception to how the organization ranks players, or cite obtuse rules, or flaws in the system".

While I share your enthusiasm for letting Wizards know how much support the game has, I'm not sure I agree that we're suffering from a lack of formal structure. Looking at the Wizards' DCI site, I see a lot of stifling documentation that I think we're better off without and not much that makes me think a "formal structure" is better than what we're currently pulling off without it.

Anyway, nice post, and I agree with much of it. I'm just happy with the structures we have now, particularly that they're ground-up and not imposed from above. I'm wary about changing the model without some clear benefits and I'm trying to understand what those benefits are.

Oh, I didn't realise that blog posts didn't include signatures. Here's a link to the NERV thread for those that have no idea what I was talking about.

I signed up for DCI at GenCon in conjunction with the Heroscape events...after day 1 it was useless since it was not set up.

It will not be ready for NHSD.

My main issue with a national ranking like this is that it may change the overall fun of playing the game and turn it into something that is more about where you rank than just enjoying the game itself.

Using DCI will not show WOTC anything other than who is playing the game at DCI events. We all know that 100x more people play this game in complete non-tournament situations.

Onacara, do you feel that the NERV has done this in the North East? It was certainly a worry when I started it, but I've felt it has only added to some friendly rivalry in the area.

Good read, CheddarLimbo. Thanks for the passion you've shared with the rest of us. Hopefully, Wizards catches hold of that from all of us (HS players) on NHSD.

Wow, I totally missed the announcement that is wouldn't be ready in time for NHSD. I'm such a nerd...

Anyway, Onacara, you say "Using DCI will not show WOTC anything other than who is playing the game at DCI events.", and I guess that's true, but we've got to do what we can. Even if we're only reporting one in twenty games this way, that's one in twenty more than if we didn't report any at all, right?

And Ollie, I think GB linked to the DCI software in one of his threads about the announcement. The software itself should have the information you're looking for.

Yes you have a point Cheddar...BUT...we have first time tournament goers at our local events which are very laid back and these people are so intimidated sometime that they make themselves ill. I think putting something as "ominous" as the term National Ranking may scare some away.

I'm generally not into tournaments, but that might change. After the July 4th weekend and the arrival of Wave 9, we're going to be setting up tournament sized boards for the first time (at least at my house) here in NYC, and try out our 500 Point "perfect" armies on them!

Its ironic that corporate support has seemed so slim thus far, given the high level of activity of the Heroscape player community. Sometimes I wonder if all our fan activity makes them think "well, we don't have to do anything, those crazy fans will do it for us." Reminds me of the old 'Save Star Trek' campaign after the original show went off the air. Anyone corporate listening out there..? STAR TREK SIZED PROFITS POSSIBLY TO BE MADE HERE!?!
