FFC #3 - Who will (and won't) be in Horizon in Sight

Now that I'm nearing the end of the phase on subcharacters, I figured I could tell you who exactly will be showing up in Horizon. As always, this is liable to change. New and old characters can sneak in there one way or another, and some characters might change or be dropped completely. But at this point, that's pretty unlikely, at least for those characters who play pivotal roles. Background characters are always capable of popping into existence during writing.

Dan will of course be there, as will a lot of other familiar faces from the Quest. A lot of them have changed quite a bit, so I'm not going to spoil things by detailing who they are or what they do. But a quick mention of each won't hurt.

Heleer. Heleer has always been an integral part of Dan's tale, and she remains so in Horizon. This time though, she has an actual past (as opposed to the Quest, where she seemingly sprang into existence in Dan's cell). She's one of the two most developed subcharacters so far, and I'm excited to let her tale unfold as she interacts with Dan.

Vydar. The valkyrie himself. While nowhere near as pivotal as other subcharacters, Vydar actually got more development than I thought he would, and he came out quite a bit different than he was in the Quest. You'll have to wait to find out how, but suffice it to say he's not the one-dimensional schemer he once was.

Gormal Ironfist. The dwarf was nearly cut from the cast, but I decided he needed to appear, and made some fast revisions. I'm glad I did too, because he came up with a lot of development, turning him from a disturbingly-Irish-sounding dwarf into a well-rounded character. Quick question: 4'7" sound about right for a Feylundian dwarf?

Vervalsing. Another member of the intrepid Quest heroes, I couldn't tell Dan's tale without the fire-breathing protector of Icarians. Vervalsing underwent more changes than some, and he's definitely different than when you first saw him in the Quest, but I believe the changes are for the better. I can't wait to put him and Dan together and see what happens.

Kaemon Awa. Yep. The samurai found his way into the tale. I personally really like Kaemon as a figure (both thematically and statistically), and I think he's fairly popular with the community, so he seemed like the right choice for the position I needed to fill. And fill it he did. Kaemon has a relatively short screen-time (at least so far), but he makes the most of it.

Ana Karithon. The healer returns in Horizon, and she's not the pulpit-pounding cleric you remember. She could very well be the most developed subcharacter I have, and I really look forward to writing her tale. For have a tale she does, and it's still unfolding when she crosses paths with Dan.

Francois. The unnervingly-zealous knight of Jandar's unfortunately did not make the cut to the cast. Yet. There was no place for him, although if there's room for a background character, I'll try to get him in there. That being said, it is unlikely at this point that Francois will be seen for more than a chapter or two, if at all.

Nargshir. I can say the wolf warrior who turned against Utgar will likely not be showing up in Horizon. There is no place for him as of right now, and I see no hint that there will be. That being said, you never know. Some form of him might pop up briefly.

Utgar. Yep. I removed Utgar as well.

Okay, obviously I didn't do that. However, as it turns out, Utgar is currently not in the tale anywhere. There just isn't a need for him yet. Of course, Valkrill isn't in the tale yet either, and I know he'll be showing up, so you can bet that Utgar will too. At some point. I would guess that for most of the tale he will be in the background however. I can say that he likely won't be battling Dan at Einar's wellspring. Don't get me wrong. There's currently still a battle at the wellspring. Just... not with Utgar.

UPDATE: So this morning I realized I went through the last two phases backwards. I should have done subplots before subcharacters. This means I need to go back and analyze the needs of the main character and main plot, since those are what give rise to everything.

I came up with way fewer subcharacters than I had. As in two side characters and one important one, versus the five important ones and one side character I had before. So that's a problem.

I do have a tone of potential subplots now, but I'm not sure what will happen to the subcharacters. There will likely be some changes, and people will probably be dropped. That being said, they are already developed, and they won't hurt anything, so if there's a place for them in a subplot I'll just put them in anyway.

~TGRF, keeping you updated.

UPDATE: I have temporarily paused the development for Horizon, while I work out the beginning of the structure for my novels. I was hit with a brainwave on Friday, and think I finally have the right structure and setting. So far so good. Everything seems to be aligned correctly and falling into place. Once I am sure the setting works, I will go back to Horizon.
UPDATE: Still on my novels. Things are working. Finding the correctly aligned goal is just proving a bit illusive. Once I find that I should be able to get back to Horizon.
