Heroscape - Back to the Basics

Posted July 5th, 2010 at 03:51 PM by Filthy the Clown
I am relatively new to Heroscape. My wife surprised me for X-mas 2009 by giving me Master Set 1. What a gift it was! We have played numerous games with MS1, and I would go so far as to consider it akin to cheap couples therapy. Soon afterwards, a google search led me to this forum, where I have enjoyed reading posts from other heroscapers who have a passion for this fun game. I have since augmented my heroscape collection with other figures and terrian expansion sets. However, my wife has lost some of the passion for this game, and I finally extracted her answer as to why.

There is now too much heroscape in our house.

What used to be a simple process (select an army from the cards of MS1, set up a map, and have some fun) takes much longer. When drafting, it takes 5 minutes just to lay all of the cards out on the floor, let along peruse them and draft an army. Plus, it takes time just to pick through the figures and find one's army. Not a big deal to me, but apparently it drives her crazy (just like the Fine Young Cannibals). I have tried:
  • creating pre-made armies to use (she never quite likes the army that she chooses)
  • Trying different scenarios (Capture the Flag, etc)
  • Playing a stripped-down, lower-points-level game. For example, a dungeon crawl on MS3 (she does not care for this. And to be honest with you, I had my fill of D and D as a teenager).

So, I have since separated MS1 out of the community plastic tub, and this is what we use when we game (repackaging it into the original box was a PAIN, so many thanks to lefton4ya [http://www.heroscapers.com/community...searchid=56076] for the repackaging instructions).

That being said, we find ourselves enjoying our games with a greater intensity. MS1 just seems to be more pure and original, and having a finite amount of heroes/unique squads to choose seems to bring out more creativity in regards to strategy. Simply put, we have more fun with less. My next step is to slowly introduce some of my favorite non-MS1 figures into our games, a squad or two at a time. But, it seems that the majority of my collection now sits on the sidelines, only seeing use when a friend comes over.

Does anyone have this problem with spouses and heroscape? What solutions have you found, and have you also gone back to the basics for some, or all, of your games?

Welcome to Site Supporter Status!

I have a problem with my brother, who doesn't like playing HS anymore since I beat him too often. I try to use weaker and/or lower army point totals, but he thinks this is unfair on him. I need to find some way to get his interest back up, but nothing's working.

Have you tried using themed armies? Find out what he likes (vampires, robots, etc), then build him a nice, themed army. You might have to let him win a couple. However, when I always try this "strategy," the dice gods don't like it: I usually roll better than ever.

That's the other problem; he doesn't like me building his armies. He will build an army like Braxas, Minions x2, and Ashra x1, I try to tell him to replace Ashra with Marro Warriors, but he won't.

I even try to let him win by using bad figure placement, but the game is still close...

I know what you mean. I have thought of another tactic to try with my wife: bribery. If she wins, I will take her to dinner, do some chore, etc. You might want to give this a shot, such as offering a prize for winning, doing one of his chores, etc?

Of course, another option is extortion. Play a game, or I WON'T do a chore, take her to dinner, etc. I should go ahead and clean out my doghouse...

I think you are very lucky to have a spouse who'll play.
I think you've got something there too- MS1 is the best. I know my daughter likes to play with a limited number of figures- there are so many she feels like she's just learning to use some of them well, and doesn't want to add a bunch of new ones with yet more unheard of specials.
Heroscape needs a new MS1.... it was made to be the best intro to the game- and it was.

MS1 will get opened up tonight for a few games...Without the tub of other figures. DW9k and the Tarn will have another moment in the HS spotlight.
