Any other X-Wing fans here? I've got a small fleet for both the Rebels and Imperials.

2x X-Wing
2x A-Wing
1x B-Wing
1x HWK-290
1x YT-1300

4x TIE Fighter
2x TIE Interceptor
1x TIE Bomber
1x Firespray-31
1x Lambda Shuttle

I'm always finding out something new about this game, strategies and tactics I never would've thought of. And there's plenty more to get!

What are your favorite ships to fly, or combos to put in a squad? I'll be posting lots more when I have more time!

One of the guys in my game group found a scenario on Boardgamegeek.com for the battle of Hoth.

The rebels are defending some shield generators at the center left side of the top picture. The guy who brought the scenario made the generator out of paper. He also used some rectangular cardboard with images of AT-ATs and some smaller cardboard circles for the smaller AT's. They were marching toward the generators with some Empire ships as escort. The figures represented rebels and they had some minor rule of sort I can't remember exactly.

I used the scape tundra set as well as some other snow pieces to help build the trench in front of the shield generators and also the glaciers to add some difficulty to maneuvering. I nearly crashed when maneuvering between two glaciers in the center.

It was pretty fun, I had a couple A-Wings and maybe an X-Wing. We had 3 players a side. We've had games where we had 3 or 4 a side and maybe a couple ships each and just asteroids, but tried something different in the above game.

A few of the guys in my game group did some major playtesting for the base set and gave some good suggestions that were used. I got to test the B-Wing and Tie-Bomber before it came out, but haven't played X-Wing in a while unfortunately.

Wow, love those pics.

I just discovered X-Wing over Thanksgiving break; my uncle brought the Core, an Interceptor, and an A-Wing over. I bought a YT-1300 soon after, though I haven't had a chance to play it yet. I'll have to throw the Millenium Falcon in a 'scape game on of these days.

My favorite combination so far is the A-Wing plus Maneuverability (allows you to use a sharp 1 red turn as an action w/o stress. It gives the A-Wing insane maneuverability, outperforming even TIEs (though no Barrell Rolling still is a disadvantage. I haven't tried out a large fleet yet, so I'm most excited to put 6-7 TIEs on the board and try not to crash into myself.

I've been interested in the game, as I enjoy all things Star Wars...but the game is just so darned expensive!

I'm a huge fan of the game. I've bought in whole hog. I've got at least 3 of every small ship (with 8 Ties, and 5 x-Wings). I think it's a great game. Last month at BGG.Con, I ran a epic scale game with 10 players and 500 points per side (basically my whole collection). Here are some shots from the event.

Here is a shot of the setup.

A shot as the two fleets converge.

A shot of the Falcon as it gets swarmed. All of the large ships had huge targets painted on them. Everyone was gunning for them. None of them lasted very long.

A shot toward the end of the game. The rebels made some (IMO) poor maneuvers and ended up in a huge mess in the middle. The imperials controlled the flanks and pushed them into a huge meat grinder in the middle. It was brutal (especially at the end). Ships were dropping like flies in the last round.

The last two rebels in the meat grinder (they didn't last long).

A final shot of the tracker board I used to keep the game organized. As you can see, the Imps didn't lose many ships.

It was a ton of fun and everyone had a blast. I can't wait to run another epic game next year.

Dignan, how long did that game take to play out?

I know for us, even 100-150 points-ish can take close to 2 hours, so I'm just curious.

Rebels - 4 X-Wings / 2 A-Wings / 2 B-Wings / 2 Y-Wings

Imperials - 6 TIEs / 3 Interceptors / 4 Bombers / 2 Advanced

+ the big ships and 2 sets of Imperial Aces coming in soon! :D

The game took about 5 hours to play. The amount of carnage sped things along. I think it could have taken longer if the rebels hadn't gotten stuck in the grinder, but the game does speed along with all of those ships firing.

The key is being organized. You've got to have some means to track all the ships in play and who's turn it is to move/shoot.

Well, since there is a thread now, how about people post up some of their favorite armies?

The army selection process is by far one of my favorite aspects of the game. Trying to come up with the right ships, the right upgrades and pilot skills, etc. My buddy and I typically play anywhere from 50 - 100 points, depending on time, and sometimes we'll start with, say, a base of 50 points and roll a d20 (with a multiplier from 1-5) and add that many points to the base for our starting army points.

I don't know that I have a favorite army yet, but I do want to play a 4-Bomber army with the extra Bombers I asked for for Christmas, heh!

Right now, the 2 armies I want to field and play are the following:

ESCORT
Captain Yorr (shuttle)(24): PS 4
Ion Cannon(3) / Recon Specialist(3) / Gunner(5)
Maarek Stele (TIE Advanced)(27): PS 9
Veteran Instincts(1) / Engine Upgrade(4)
Darth Vader (TIE Advanced)(29): PS 9
Engine Upgrade(4)
total 100 points

BOMBS AWAY
Captain Jonus (TIE Bomber)(22): PS 6
Expert Handling(2)
Major Rhymer (TIE Bomber)(26): PS 7
Expert Handling(2) / Cluster Missiles(4) x 2
Gamma Squadron Pilot (TIE Bomber)(18 ): PS 4
Seismic Charges(2)
Gamma Squadron Pilot (TIE Bomber)(18 ): PS 4
Seismic Charges(2)
total 100 points

Thoughts?

Typically when we play, I let my friend - or son - decide which faction they would like to play, and more times than not, I end up being the Rebels. My experience with the Empire is limited, so I'm not even sure that either army is even feasible, but they sure seem like they'd be fun.

What is the best way to build up a fleet of X-Wings and TIE's? Buying multiple core sets, or buying one core and multiple expansions?

Cores. Expansions are only worth it for the new pilots & upgrades (Wedge Antilles!).

Yep, you only need to buy one tie and x-wing expansion pack. Then you just want to buy some core sets. It's a little cheaper, plus you get extra movement tiles and dice. I was lucky enough to grab a couple extra when they went on clearance at target for $11.

Mmm, clearance price. Nice score.

Yeah, I didn't even need the ships, but I couldn't pass them up for that price. It was too good a deal. I should have just bought everything there.
The funny thing is, the big Target Superstores still have X-Wing in stock, at the retail price of $39.99. All the smaller Target stores (or so it seems) are the ones that had X-Wing on sale, and the shelves are empty.

It harkens me back to the days of going to Target, or Wal-Mart, or Toys R Us, trying to find a Heroscape score that no one knew about, or that you could hit first. Sadly, though, I keep finding the full retail-priced copies of X-Wing, but I know those discounted copies still have to be out there...somewhere.

And no, I don't need the ships either, but it's that Heroscape chase all over again. Y'all know what I mean. ;)

@Hahma: Star Wars minis, plus X-Wing, plus Heroscape? Very cool!

@Arch-vile: You mean Daredevil, right? That's one upgrade I haven't tried, yet, but it seems like a very bad idea on anything without Boost.

@Dignan: I really, really need to get a multiplayer game of X-Wing in soon! Too bad the Rebels got chewed up and it wasn't a closer game.

Right now, the 2 armies I want to field and play are the following:

ESCORT
Captain Yorr (shuttle)(24): PS 4
Ion Cannon(3) / Recon Specialist(3) / Gunner(5)
Maarek Stele (TIE Advanced)(27): PS 9
Veteran Instincts(1) / Engine Upgrade(4)
Darth Vader (TIE Advanced)(29): PS 9
Engine Upgrade(4)
total 100 points

BOMBS AWAY
Captain Jonus (TIE Bomber)(22): PS 6
Expert Handling(2)
Major Rhymer (TIE Bomber)(26): PS 7
Expert Handling(2) / Cluster Missiles(4) x 2
Gamma Squadron Pilot (TIE Bomber)(18 ): PS 4
Seismic Charges(2)
Gamma Squadron Pilot (TIE Bomber)(18 ): PS 4
Seismic Charges(2)
total 100 points

Thoughts?
ESCORT: IMO, the Shuttle isn't a very good offensive piece, making the Ion/Recon/Gunner combo way too much of an investment. I haven't tried the Ion on the Shuttle yet, but if you can hit something, the Shuttle would be able to stay on its tail, despite its terrible dial, and escort it off the board without being shot down easily. I'd swap the Crew out for someone else, though.

BOMBS AWAY: I haven't tried Expert Handling yet, so I can't really comment on that. But this list looks like a ton of fun. Jonus/Rhymer and Cluster Missiles were made for each other.

@Porkins: Definitely get a minimum of 2 Core Sets. 6 of each die is helpful, so you're not having to remember and re-roll dice. Plus, it is a little cheaper for the ships involved. I plan on getting 2x X-Wing and 2x TIE Fighter to complete my fleet of each and have some extra copies of the upgrades they come with.

The only "cheap" X-Wing I've sen in person is a pre-owned Core for $19.99 at a local book store.

So let me ask you, Necro - what would you do to make the Shuttle army more viable? And I guess I should say that I love this game (X-Wing) and it is so much fun that viable, to me, means competitive to a degree, but fun to play as well.

Drop Recon Specialist? Lose Ion Cannon? I'm just curious what you would do to make it more playable.

IMO (and others from what I've read) the Shuttle's (lack of) maneuverability makes it really difficult to keep pointed toward enemy ships. Investing 8 points in a Gunner and Recon that'll help out with only a few shots per game is a lot that could be better spent somewhere else. The Engine Upgrade goes a long way toward making the Shuttle more flyable (some people think it's a necessity), although I think you could strip back to just the Ion Cannon. Especially if you're going to be taking on other ships' Stress via Yorr, since you won't be able to take actions. Once you've got a small ship Ionized, though, the Shuttle can follow right behind and finish it off, and it's hard for the opponent to get rid of with 10 Shields/Hull.

Finally got the X-Wing and TIE expansions (1/2 respectively), so I can play Wedge and the "Empire All-Stars" squad (all named TIE pilots, 97 points)! :excited:
