What Board Games Will You Be Purchasing?

The Great Wall is due before Christmas; most have finally been shipped out. Hellenica: Story of Greece Leaders & Legends Expansion is now due in late January.

After being fully funded, Spring and Autumn: Story of China had its Gamefound campaign withdrawn, it will reappear on Kickstarter now, hopefully in January.

Within two weeks of each other, all three previously mentioned Undaunted boxes have also arrived.

Yuletide gaming has begun; it took three tries to get Brian Boru to the table, but its challenging and lots of fun!

Time for another purchasing roundup!

1. New games that are recently arrived and being played:

Undaunted Stalingrad
The Russian Campaign Deluxe 5th Edition
Heroscape: Age of Annihilation

(This Haslab Offering failed last Fall. But with the help of others here on the fan site and my own mini proxies, we've been playing our own fan version of it for months now. See my signature thread for accounts of our games, including photos.)

2. Games due in March:

The Great Wall Update Kit (Rules Book 2.0 and revised cards)
Spring and Autumn: Story of China

3. Games backed for Fall:

Dune: War For Arrakis (September?)
Bretwalda (October?)

4. New Kickstarters Backed for 2024 publication:

The Last Kingdom (Kickstarter offering due in a few days; based on the TV series)
Song For War: Mediterranean Theater (Kickstarter has about a week more to run)

5. Retail Games Expected in 2023-4

Commands & Colors Napoleonics Expansion #7 La Grand Battles
Commands & Colors Medieval Expansion #1 The Early Crusades

Gaming Goodness! Check them out.

At the recommendation of a friend I recently ordered Age of Galaxy while it was on sale on Amazon, which I would describe as a Tiny Epic style (not from Gamelyn Games though) rendition of Twilight Imperium; supposedly plays in 45 minutes. Very streamlined gameplay. The rulebook and text is clearly not from a native English speaker but it seemed clear enough. I haven't had a chance to play it yet, sadly, but I'm hoping to try both it and Tiny Epic Vikings soon.

I'm waiting for my FLGS to get Dragonquest: A Fantasy Dice Game in the mail. Another dungeon-based roll and write! Who knew? 8)

Yes, I saw the last kingdom Kickstarter. It did not look like my kind of game, but I expect I will try it if some of my friends get it.

RECENT GAMES RECEIVED

The Russian Campaign, Deluxe 5th Edition--We have played through the five scenarios.

Undaunted Stalingrad--We're halfway through the 15 scenario campaign.

Spring and Autumn: Story of China--played three times so far, with a fourth game scheduled for this month (May 2023).

The Great Wall Update Kit--2.0 Rule Book and 19 revised game cards.

GAMES EXPECTED NEXT FALL

The Last Kingdom I just watched the five season series, and am on the 12th book of the 13 book series by Bernard Cornwell.

Bretwalda A very different second treatment of Anglo Saxon England invaded by Vikings.

Dune: War For Arrakis 2-4 Players (mostly 2) in a medium length game by the designers of War For The Ring. Great minis by CMON.

AWAITING REOFFERING ON KICKSTARTER

Song For War: The Mediterranean Theater
The designers of this first game for them failed to fund, but they will revamp the offering. Originally scheduled for next Fall as well.

The old 70s game Kingmaker has just returned, revised and modernized, by its original company. Kickstarter backers have their game, and I'm hoping to have a retail copy here later this month. Two pals used to own and play it many moons ago. At least two others have expressed an interest in playing it.

I played it several times, but never owned it, because it had some problems. It seems these have all been now addressed by the redesign. The subject is the English War of the Roses.

Just heard that a pal who ordered it for me just got the notification that Kingmaker (aka "Kingmaker The Second") should be here this coming week. A long Designer's Diary addressed the problems it used to have on BGG, and made me excited for this release. So, like The Russian Campaign, it will be a game from the Seventies reborn! This new version will be shorter and play with up to five. After being Kickstarted, it will also have the old version as an option, and even a Solo mode. This is the old design on the English War of the Roses.

How often does a Kickstarter deliver early? The Last Kingdom will be here in August instead of September. It was a simple offering with no multiple backer tiers, stretch goals, or add-ons. It looks to be a much simpler game, but not easy to win! Its Leaders and Heroes of Anglo Saxon England will have powers reflecting their roles in the novel series and TV show by or based on the works by Bernard Cornwell, which actually is a fictionalized version of the history of his own family, which he learned about only late in life!

Another Kickstarter now due in October is Dune: War For Arrakis, a full on CMON production. They just released the newly redrafted rules based on backer comments, including from some who playtested it on Table Top Simulator. This is the new online standard for developing a game, and several are doing this now. It has seven "alternate universe" options where different characters lived longer, shorter, or changed alliances during the first book chronicling the Harlkonnen-Atreides war. What will be out first, this or the second part of the new movie?

Bretwalda is a totally different treatment of the Anglo Saxon kingdoms and Viking invasions of England. Its also due next Fall. Its a beautiful game, and I'm also getting the first expansion, which allows for a Viking player (and a fifth player). How can you not?

Song For War is a crowdfunder I backed, but then the offering failed. The new company making this first design on the WWII Mediterranean Theater with the British, Americans, Italians, and Germans, should be reoffered. Its been two months since it was withdrawn, and many of us are hoping to see it reborn with its innovative features and new scenarios.

I'm looking forward to backing (Time)Scape from Adventure Together Games. They released a trailer that is pretty neat:

Other than that I'm just saving for whenever Heroscape goes on preorder and trying my best to talk myself out of any other board game purchases.

When will Timescape be available for backing?

The aesthetic is glorious; they really nailed it. The timing is a bit unfortunate, as I am more likely to put money towards buying new terrain from Renegade which would be compatible with my current collection. Then again, it would provide different map options....

I really need to stop so I can save for when Renegade releases their first wave of Scape, but I broke down and backed the Crossbows and Catapults KS. The nostalgia factor was simply too great to be overcome by a sensible choice. :)

Ordered! Thanks for the heads up on this new version Chaz! A beloved game of mine from the ‘70s. Remind me to show you my hand painted large scale version of the game board sometime!

A minor update on Timescape by Adventure Together Games: it is now called TimeStrike. Also, clicking around their website, I noticed that they actually have a prototype card:

uc

(I took the liberty of giving her one of ryguy266's shirts. She looked cold)

Definitely similar, yet also definitely more complicated. Still no update on when the Kickstarter will be, but clearly things are still happening.

Freelancers: A Crossroads Game and Pirate Fluxx. Next month it'll be The Adventures of Robin Hood and possibly the Friar Tuck in Trouble expansion.

Excited for this as well! I’ve had the opportunity to work on editing for this project and it’s been a blast working with their team and seeing everything come together ahead of the kickstarter.

Dragons Down, when it comes out. It's a remake of Magic Realm and the tutorial video looks great!

Here's an update on my last post 3 months ago:

Arrived: Kingmaker (The Second) Did a full five player, and enjoyed the new revisions. Had a second play cancelled due to the big flooding rain we had last weekend, and hoping to reschedule this month.

Arrived: The Last Kingdom Started with 7 solitaires at various player counts. Then did a 2, 3, 4, and 5 player with live opponents. Looking to play again soon.

Delayed: Dune: War For Arrakis (CMON KS) From October now to November. Can hardly wait! Getting both expansions--Smugglers and The Spacing Guild.

Delayed: Bretwalda (Phalanx Gamefound) From the Fall now to the Spring. Solo mode cancelled, but with extras being offered to compensate. Getting Danelag, the Viking expansion.

Withdrawn: Song For War: Mediterranean Theater (New Company KS) Offer failed, but expected 2024 reoffer. Highly anticipated by many wargamers, with innovative features and nice graphics. Expected with new shorter scenarios and other enhancements for this unusual treatment of moderate difficulty for land, sea, and air combat all around the Mediterranean coast and in the sea--Gibralter, Corsica, Sardinia, Italy, Sicily, Algeria, Libya, Tunesia, Egypt, Greece, and Crete.

I'm thematically interested in Battle For Sampo: Kalevala Chronicles, which just showed at Essen 2023. It is based on Finnish myth, which is not something you see every day. And its by Stephen Baker! There's almost no info about it yet, but I saw it on a preview video by Sam Healy, who didn't know much about it.

I don't know if anyone gave on update on this yet, but the kickstarter will launch October 24, 2023. Yes, the figures will be prepainted ;) Pretty cool stuff! More information below!

Two designs I preordered some time ago have been hanging fire forever from GMT:

Commands & Colors Napoleonics Expansion 7: La Grande Battles
I own all 11 C&C games with all of their dozens of expansions, but this is my favorite. It will include a revision and more scenarios for the larger than Epic format LGB format, some rules revisions, some new troop pieces, and a few Standard and Epic scenarios.

Commands & Colors Medieval Expansion 1: The Crusades This will have many rules revisions and different troop types, since the core game covered Byzantine battles.

I did get the new C&C Napoleonics laser printed dice, to replace the old stickered ones.

***

Dune: War For Arrakis has had several delays; even a Christmas delivery would be optimistic. Orders are currently being boxed in China. Which will come first; the game or Part II of the new movie?
