I've never played HeroScape, but I've owned the RotV master set since its release. I recently pulled it out for some soloscape. I wanted to simulate a game and write an after-action report. So... this is the first time I've done something like this. I went with a horde-like game. I chose Finn, Thorgrim, and the Tarn Viking Warriors as my team. Every round a new opponent enters the battlefield. I do not roll initiative for this game, the Vikings always take the first turn. There are no order markers either, but turns play out as they normally would, except every army card gets a turn. I built the Trollsford Swamp Battlefield. The Vikings started in the southeast on the high-ground, while the enemy spawns in the northwest.
Round 1: The Tarn Viking Warriors move forward, but do not manage to roll for a Berserker Charge. The Marro Warriors are the first to enter the battlefield. They are able to move up but the Vikings are not in range yet. Thorgrim and Finn move forward.
Round 2: Ne-Gok-Sa spawns on the battlefield. The Tarn Viking Warriors take their turn and move forward but they are slowed down in the water. Fortunately I roll a 17 and they can use Berserker Charge. They get themselves out of the water but not in melee range of the Marro Warriors. The Marro Warriors attack. The first two Marro Warriors are able to eliminate two Vikings, and the other two Marro Warriors miss their shots. Thorgrim moves up, as does Ne-Gok-Sa, and then Finn, but none of them are close enough to any enemies to make an attack.
Round 3: Grimnak spawns this round. The Tarn Viking Warriors are finally able to close the gap. One achieves the high-ground, but he misses during his attack. The other Viking is at least able to destroy his opponent, despite being on a lower level. The three remaining Marro Warriors take their turn but they miss all of their shots. Thorgrim catches up but he has to jump into the water to engage a Marro Warrior. He completely misses his attack. Ne-Gok-Sa moves towards this engagement, and believe it or not rolls a 20 for his Mindshackle ability... Thorgrim joins the enemy. Ne-Gok-Sa can still attack this round so he turns and destroys a Viking. Finn moves up but he is unable to attack anyone. Grimnak moves ahead as well, but has yet to reach the battle.
Round 4: The Zettian Guards arrive on this turn. The only Tarn Viking Warrior left misses on the attack, despite his height advantage. The Marro then take their turn; the first misses his shot but the second destroys the Viking Warrior, leaving Finn as the sole remaining unit. Finn fails to injure his brother, and Ne-Gok-Sa fails to injure Finn on his turn. Grimnak moves closer, but it is Thorgrim that is able to deliver a wound to Finn. The Zettian Guards move up as well, but both miss their target.
Round 5: Deathwalker 9000 spawns. Finn attacks Thorgrim and delivers one wound. One Marro Warrior makes a hit and delivers second wound to Finn, but the other Marro fail. Ne-Gok-Sa's Mindshackle fails and so does his attack. Grimnak engages but Chomp fails and so does his attack. Thorgrim and the Zettian Guards take their turns and both fail to wound Finn any further. Even Deathwalker 9000 moves forward and misses Finn.
Round 6: Mimring spawns. Finn attacks Thorgrim but fails to do any damage. The Marro Warriors fire away but only one shot hits the mark, giving Finn a third wound. Ne-Gok-Sa's turn is next; he rolls a 20 and Mindshackles Finn.
Conclusion: Not very eventful, lol, but it was just something I wanted to write up. The Vikings were never able to deal any real damage outside of killing one Marro Warrior. Thorgrim was quickly mindshackled by Thorgrim. Finn lasted longer than I expected, but only managed to hit Thorgrim once. Ultimately, Ne-Gok-Sa was able to Mindshackle him as well.
