The New York City Gang Of Four

Well met!

The "tentative" date is no longer tentative. We will be playing on June 11.

Yesterday, I suggested that I might have a scenario by this morning. A few hours late, but here we go . . .

Next to the Throne!

To have the ear of the Emperor, it is necessary to stand close to him . . .
The Map. The Holocron of Death Star Throne Room. Delete Special Rules, Void Spaces, Destructible Objects, and Power Glyphs. Treat this as a regular 'Scape casual map. Place the Emperor on the throne. The Emperor figure may not be moved or attacked. Note: This Map is claustrophobic, so it is suggested that players eschew figures that are too big or clumsy. Also, the ceiling is high enough that figures may Fly or Leap over the uncapped pillars - and I'll allow Drops.

1748288383880.png

The Armies. Players will be divided into two teams of three armies apiece. If an odd number of players, one player (myself in the first game) will control two armies. Each player will field a 500 point (Classic, AoA and C3V/SoV allowed, no Marvel) army taking up no more than eight spaces. Thus, each team will fit within one of the 24-hex Start Zones shown. We will use Delta points and it is suggested that you use the DELTA ARMY BUILDER to construct your armies. As usual, in anticipation of playing two games, each player is encouraged to bring multiple armies.

The Victory Conditions. After 10 Rounds, the team with the most units adjacent to the Emperor wins. In case of a tie, additional full Rounds will be played until it is broken.

Well met!

Thanks, my Lord! For our purposes, I fear its Special Rules, Void Spaces, Destructible Objects, and Power Glyphs would disturb our normal 'Scape wa, but I am open to suggestion . . .

Well met!

A note about yesterday's games. A disappointing day for me. Thrasher won the first game so fast that it seemed that I hardly got to play my cool army. And, in the second, it seemed as though I didn't roll a Shield for at least a whole Round. I do not recall ever having such bad luck. I must admit that I may have played the Pathfinders too aggressively too early. Otherwise, thanks to chas for having us over, and to Thrasher for designing and building a fine map.

In general, I prefer team games to free-for-alls, which seem to bring out the worst in us.

Kolakoski,

Thanks for the good long phone conversation, and nice editing job on the scenario now based on a few points we discussed! We also talked aboutr the last game, since I also suffered from a bit of postgame depression! I had a tough time that day, and so smaller maps than our usual 20x30 hexes may work better as well as team games; they have in several previous sessions. I don't mind losing, but losing badly is...bad.

We also discussed the map for this new scenario of K's, and clarified a few points, some of which now appear in the scenario. Note that the photo of the map is reversed from the map plan view, which makes it a bit hard to figure out what is going on in some places!

After getting a link from Thrasher, since its not in the normal list of books (!?!), it took me half an hour, but I finally did print out the C3V Ogre Castle Crasher card, and so its available now for everyone here, although I'd have to proxy it or have Thrasher bring his. I'd never even heard of this C3V character, even though he was approved way back in October!

I really like my "Hotsy Totsy" army, and will probably play it again in some form in the future. I'm thinking that a map with lots of lava fiedl/molten lava that doesn't impair movement by forcing players to cross it might be fun to try, and I'm up in July for GMing. Of course, I'd warn everyone of the lava presence beforehand!

K. and I often discuss building maps and armies, as well as scenario rules together, and have for many years. Everyone else of course is welcome to join in.

When you use the DELTA ARMY BUILDER, you can use its Copy button. If you then paste it, it will list the figures individually (without their Point values) above the total Points, Figures, and Hexes in the format below. The last line reflects the appropriate settings for the Builder.

500 Points, 8 Figures, 8 Hexes
Settings: VC, Delta Points

P.S.: Having built my armies already, you may view them here to see how the format looks in its entirety.

I've built mine too, but I like to keep them secret before the game. It should be an interesting session. Unlike all the units for the same general armies which I've been doing for the Renegade Bonus Scenario Series, these are both using very varied Generals.

NewScape

As I mentioned in a private email, I now have printed out cards for proxy play for the 12 Renegade Embers of War story arc's 12 new cards. 7 of these finish off the old ones designed by the Hasbro War Council. 5 are Renegade's new designs. I now have a total of 60 AOA cards.

If Renegade were to stop producing after these October releases, I'd call the revival a success. But I don't think they will, since GI Joe Scape, in which I'm not interested, has also been announced for the future. Atomic Empire of North Carolina sells painted (and unpainted) AOA sets at a sizable discount.

Well met!

Below is a map I built for a demo years ago here on Roosevelt Island.

As uncapped Pillars are ugly, I use capped ones with black pebbles to show that they can not be used as perches. Today, chas and I are building The Holocron of Death Star Throne Room for tomorrow's game, and we'll cap and pebble all the Pillars.

You could 3D Print caps with statues of Palpatine on them XD.

Remember, the Emperor is watching! Always!
Well met!

Or cover them with Minions of Utgar . . .

On another note, in reference to new AoA figure: the Greatbow Archers are way under priced at 80 Points, IMVHO (V is for Very).

Just a note that I've now printed out the 12 new AOA Embers of War cards, due in October, and so they are available here for proxy play. I now have a full collection of 61 AOA cards. Some I've bought the real cards for, some are just paper copies for proxy play. This includes upcoming/recent proxies such as Thyraxis Dragoon, Major Q11, Decker, and even Raelin IV.

Kolakoski as this month's GM has disqualified these new cards for his Delta Plus point scenario this time around, but I'll allow them for next month's July game (using regular point costs).

Armies for Kolakoski's Monthly Scenario "Next To The Throne."

Yesterday the New York City Gang of Four played two team games for our regular monthly session, the first with five players (K. played two armies for a total of six) and the second with four players/armies (Emperor had to leave after Game One). Wildwood Runner x2 100
Wildwood Sentinel x3 255
495, 6 Hexes

P.S.: Thrasher is one of the best players I have ever met - and I freely admit that my play is far from perfect. So I (fielding two armies in the first game), as Game Master, decided ahead of time that he team up with me in our first game. As chas would be fielding his Siege in the second game, the Brontos army was free for the first. Thrasher then said the Wildwood army sucked (proof below), so, of course, we chose the Airborne Elite army. He decided to play:

Thrasher Darkrai Army #1 (Elven Wizards)
Haduc 110
Ulginesh 150
Jordawn 90
Chardris 75
Emiroon 50
Kyntela Gwin 20
495, 7 Hexes

My Airborne Elite dropped around the throne on Round 1. By the end of the Round, Thrasher's Wizards were also there. In spite of my throwing away my Sentinels of Brax and Cyprien (although I'm being harsh as Cyprien failed to roll any Shields in 3-4 Defense rolls), things were so bad for our opponents that chas asked me if I had known how well our armies synchronized with each other ahead of time. Of course, I did not. I did not know what army Thrasher was playing until he pulled them out of his bag. I did not anticipate that Drake, chas' perfect counter to the AE, would be countered by the Wizards' Special Attacks. In any event, combined they were unapproachable. There are other counters, like Dragons, Soulborgs (DW9000 alone went down early), other Special Attackers, etc., but we were fortunate. In any event, although we played 5-6 Rounds, it was all over by Round 3.

In the second game, there were only four of us, and I chose chas to be my teammate. Thrasher's Construct army took out all the Wildwoods by Round 3 or so. chas gamely played on for a few more Rounds, but the conclusion was foregone.

Thanks again to chas for hosting us again. Nice to meet Cardboard. Too bad he's leaving for San Francisco, unlikely to return any time soon. We are fortunate to have among us so complete a collection of figures and terrain and, now, the likelihood that we will be maxed out at six players on any given game day. For chas' scenario in July, he is looking at maps with lots of Water. I saw a map with a triangular lake that I thought was created by Flash_19, but could not find it. While looking for it, I found this great looking asymmetrical map by Browncoat that might serve.

P.P.S.: I'll try to remember his thread when looking for maps on my next go around . . .

Chas Commentary of Near To The Throne

As I said to one of our members who couldn't make it, the two games were very lopsided, but the tactical combats as usual were fun. I had expected the large open center would be the main arena of conflict, but actually there was almost no fighting there. Combat occurred in the space between the start zones, and in the second game in and around the "pavilion," and in the second game on the stairs to the throne. We used the side corridors, where space was somewhat constrained for movement, but there was no action there.

Game One Saylind is my favorite rarely performing Scape piece. In the old days when she first came out, I used to do riffs on pretending to be her, and since she didn't seem to being used, pretending she was Atlaga's girfriend, and jealous of other women who would actually team up with him. But she almost always fails to summon, even though her odds should be good, and especially when victory or defeat hangs on her roll? Today there she appeared in two armies in the different games, but did not particularly shine in either.

We had very bad luck with the Kolakoski's enemy Airborne dropping right away around the throne. My advance down the side corridor, one hex wide only, had to be abandoned after the airborn covered it so completly. Meanwhile Thrasher, with a complex combo of different Elf Wizards, managed to combine their powers like a true chess master, so effectively that they appeared partially by teleportation right in front of the Airborne. Massing together to use their powers as an Elf Pod to the max, they were making the throne room area an impossible goal for us.

Soon Thrasher was brashly advancing fire wizards to shoot against us, and then teleporting them back up to the throne out of our range in the same turn! Yikes! Our side, Team Blue (the color of poker chips on our start zone hexes and the plastic "stones atop the local towers as Red was for the other side. I used this zone for both games).

The two sides mixed it up a bit in the space between the start zones, but the enemy by Turn 3 had their figures which mattered gathered around the throne or on the stairway in front of it already. I declared that they'd won the game, but after Turn 5 at the halfway point, I suggest we all did "Pickett's Charge" in a fruitless attack on their position far away, since it was the only way to win! I had Ana K. heal Sgt. Drake, and then he and Master Woo went at it, but not supported by anyone else on my side. Woo went down immediately. Drake got to the stairs, putting a wound on an Elf Wizard with his pistol, mounted to the third level of the staircase, did it again, and then died at our "high water mark." Although I was to activate Bol and Ana, I was the first eliminated from the game. later on the others moved forward toward the throne, but it was too little too late. I don't think it would have mattered, but we would have done better if the others had followed me right away. But they were having fun engaging with the enemy still in their own Red Start Zone, and I couldn't blame them.

Game Two With a busy family life, Emperor as usual had to leave after only one game. So there were now four of us, and no one had to play three armies this time. We switched teams and chairs; I was paired with Kolakoski.

My partner K. said I should go up the side corridor, as I had tried last game, while he held the area between the two start zones from attack which the enemy was making, including in and around the "Pavilion" (the opposite the throne room area). Because I couldn't get my entire army up there, I peeled off Otar (playing the wild Boar for the very first time) and later Jarek Guy to help him out. Otar gave a good account of himself, and Jarek Guy even took out three strong enemies with his Plasma Grenades! Not bad for a holding force. They started to make an impact just as K. was sadly eliminated from the game. This time the enemy was ignoring the throne to take out my partner with both armies, and then they could concentrate against me.

This time I got up the stairs with Drake, Sonlen, and Rhogar. Chen Tang was eliminated before he could use Qivering Palm, which the enemy was wary of, but most of their figures were Large or Huge and would not be affected by it. I did take out Talingul, to my satisfaction, although I didn't mention Thrasher's statement before the game that "if you get to attack Talingul, I won't be doing my job." At one shot I took out two of their figures with a BOOM!

But Boreos and Augamo were on my trail up the side corridor I'd traversed earlier, and together they took me down. But at least I'd done some enemy eliminating, and even made it to the throne this time!

:passout: I'd take my hat off to my esteemed opponents this time, but I think they already removed my head...

***Emperor Places At First Renegade Official Championship Event In NYC!***

In the latest Store Event held at Hex & Co West in Uptown Manhattan, our newest group member Emperor took Second Place in the eight player event, winning two of his three rounds. He came away with a nice custom silver banded Ewashia Mistress of Tides figure as his prize. Congratulations to him! Our Sherman Davies also attended. Both got the custom Yellow Order Marker Set that all attendees received.

Emperor stopped by here on his way home to drop off a Major Q11 figure the event runner had picked up for me earlier. This completes my set of all of the AOA Promo figures out so far. I'm still working on my Thyraxis Dragoon, the only one to come unpainted. Its sits on my painting table, about one third colored so far. He wowed an earlier session at the store, the second one I'd attended, by frenzying three times in a row to take out the Grimnak the Orc T-Rex, while other players gathered around to watch!

Time To Get Familiar With the New Renegade Embers of War Cards!

In other news, I've now printed out the 12 new Embers of War cards whose figures will become available next October for proxy play. In fact, everyone participating in our July group game which I will run, will be required to use at least one of these cards in each army for it (Date To Be Announced). Each player usually makes up two armies, as we play two games per monthly group session. I've asked participants to print out the EOW cards they will be using, and supply proxies for them if they can. Full scenario rules will be available soon.

Age of Annihilation Completed!?!

Interestingly, another poster has reported that with this next batch of characters/cards, "Age of Annihilation" will be complete, with 61 new cards. Most of us had thought that the name AOA is synonomous with last year's Renegade Revival of Heroscape, but apparantly not so. The next collection of new Renegade Scape is to be called "Mysteries of The Citadel." Huh. Sounds rather D&Dish to me. I wonder if it will start off with a new Master Set. (Edit) Apparantly yes it will.

Looking forward to chas' posting the final version of July's scenario. I have already created an army for this, which can be found here.

"EMBERSCAPE" WED. JULY 16

This is a draft ChasScape scenario, but I don't expect many changes, if any. I've added a couple of small things. I'll keep this post updated.

I'll freebuild a map with lots of Water and Foliage (all of which will give the defense bonus, whether Jungle Foliage or Evergreens. And my regular House Rule will apply, you can't draw a Line of Sight or shoot between evergreens). There will be some Wellspring Water too, with its normal values.

This is a Free For All, with 600 point/24 hex armies. Regular build points will be used. We'll roll for order to choose our Start Zones before game start, and do it again for Game Two. We will change our seating positions to be near the zones we choose. Full Card Scoring; none of this sissy math stuff. Only the person who takes down the last wound/figure gets the points. Bounty Jump your opponents whenever possible! Keep each card you finish off in front of you. The winner is the person who has killed the most points after 10 Rounds.

The only wrinkle will be that each army will have to include at least one of the 12 new Embers of War cards--coming out in October but available for printing out now on the Renegade site. All other AOA cards along with Classics and Customs (no Supers) are also eligible, including promos we don't have yet (Decker and Raelin IV).

Please print out your own Embers of War card(s) you'll be using, as I'll only have one of each here, and be using one or more of them myself. If you can't come up with proxy figures for them, I'll do it for you, but see what you can do, and let me/us know what you'll need ahead of Game Day, including such proxies. Plan to make two armies as usual, but you'll only have to run one per game.

Have had a Greatbow Archers army for a while. That and (as per chas' suggestion) a Crimson Widow Pirate army can be found here.

🌞 Summer of Scape Starts 🌻

Here at my place in Brooklyn Heights, aka The Game Palace, I've got some more upcoming 2 Player Heroscape play dates arranged now, with folks other than our regular gang members. Any visitors/lurkers who are intimidated to join in a group game, or closed out of one because there are now six of us regulars-- and that's a full table if everyone shows up for a particular date (a rarity these days)--is welcome to PM me to set up a 2 Player Scape Session. Being retired, I'm usually available more often than not.

Well met!

I’m guessing the winner is the player who kills the most points. I also don’t see a Round limit, not that we ever reach it when we have one.
