The New York City Gang Of Four

ARMIES FOR SHERMANSCAPE (3/8/25)

Sherman Davies has made a map for us called Lindaria's Isle. So far the five regular group members are in, so it will be a team game. No special scenario rules except that the few Ice hexes shown are actually Wellspring Water, and Pine Trees get the Jungle Foliage defensive bonus. A successful roll for Wellspring Water heals two wounds instead of one.

Delta Plus VC Points are in effect.

* = Sherman Davies Custom, including Supers These can be found in his custom thread (DC, Marvel, and LOTR threads).

Well met!

Need a name for this army:

165 Dividers x 3
160 Black Panther (Sherman Davies custom)
100 Raelin the Kyrie Warrior (SotM)
100 Emperor Andask
75 Torin
600 points, 14 spaces

 How about The Lone Rangers, since you only made one army instead of two like the rest of us?

Well met!
If I must . . .
135 Racheim
110 Calibrax the Kyrie Warrior
100 Emperor Andask
100 Raelin the Kyrie Warrior (SotM)
90 Ranjit Singh
65 Kha
600 points, 7 spaces

:coffee: You must; you must! Now send it in to Sherman Davies for approval, like the rest of us had to, before I can add it to the list.

Well met!

It was off the cuff. This is better:

135 Racheim
100 Agent Skahen
100 Raelin the Kyrie Warrior (SotM)
90 Ranjit Singh
65 Kha
55 Elaria the Pale
55 Prince al'Kahora
600 points, 8 spaces

Always liked the concept of Ranjit Singh. In Delta, he is reasonably affordable. Each Hero's' stats will be boosted by 1 in Attack, Defense and Move (exceptions for Ranjit Singh and Raelin), Kha's 20-sided die plus 1 by Elaria, and Rachiem, Agent Skahen, Raelin, Kha, and the Prince have multiple attacks. Bad?! Surely not . . .

P.S.: I'll be shocked, shocked, if we get in two games.

P.P.S.: I remember back in the day when Finn and Thorgrim were used (often in a "bomb" with Theracus) to boost a figure's Attack and/or Defense. 120-160 points in Classic. Spending 90 for Attack and Move for everyone but Ranjit seems like a deal to me.

Well met!

Replacing second (or even first) army, noting Unique Squads' availability for this. OMs much easier to manage here:

160 Black Panther
135 Racheim
100 Emperor Andask or Agent Skahen
90 Ranjit Singh
70 Ninjas of the Northern Wind
45 Tarn
600 points, 12 spaces

Better Sherman?

P.S.: I'm guessing the Agent Skahen version of this army is stronger . . .

Keep in mind that Black Panther does not follow a Valkyrie General, so he would not benefit from Ranjit Singh.

Well met!

Oops! So back to two armies:

165 Dividers x 3
160 Black Panther (Sherman Davies custom)
100 Raelin the Kyrie Warrior (SotM)
100 Emperor Andask
75 Torin
600 points, 14 spaces

135 Racheim
105 Locksley
100 Raelin the Kyrie Warrior (SotM)
100 Agent Skahen
90 Ranjit Singh
70 Ninjas of the Northern Wind
600 points, 9 spaces

P.S.: Although I will be unlikely to field both armies (in the second game), Mielki the Kyrie Warrior could replace Raelin the Kyrie Warrior (SotM) in that event, or

135 Racheim
105 Marro Warriors
100 Syvarris
100 Agent Skahen
90 Ranjit Singh
70 Ninjas of the Northern Wind
600 points, 11 spaces

Well met!

That is (thus far ): I'll field

165 Dividers x 3
160 Black Panther (Sherman Davies custom)
100 Raelin the Kyrie Warrior (SotM)
100 Emperor Andask
75 Torin
600 points, 14 spaces

in Game 1. If we win, I'll field

135 Racheim
105 Locksley
100 Raelin the Kyrie Warrior (SotM)
100 Agent Skahen
90 Ranjit Singh
70 Ninjas of the Northern Wind
600 points, 9 spaces

in Game 2. If we lose, I'll field

135 Racheim
105 Marro Warriors
100 Syvarris
100 Agent Skahen
90 Ranjit Singh
70 Ninjas of the Northern Wind
600 points, 11 spaces

in Game 2.

I've been watching the Marro Warriors rule for several months at our table. In this format, they may be even nastier . . .

P.S.: It appears we'll have six players now. Again, "I'll be shocked, shocked, if we get in two games."

Well met!

Sent out an email to the Gang listing the figures I'll potentially use on Saturday; i.e., Dividers x 3, Black Panther (Sherman Davies custom), Raelin the Kyrie Warrior (SotM), Emperor Andask, Racheim, Locksley, Syvarris, Agent Skahen, Ranjit Singh, Ninjas of the Northern Wind, Marro Warriors. Among us, we have all of them. We are fortunate to have been together, and collecting figures (and terrain), for so long.

Thanks, guys.

Well met!

Upon reflection, and in response to a conspiracy theory recently expressed, in the first game, I shall play

135 Racheim
105 Marro Warriors
100 Raelin the Kyrie Warrior (SotM)
100 Agent Skahen
90 Ranjit Singh
70 Ninjas of the Northern Wind
600 points, 11 spaces

saving

165 Dividers x 3
160 Black Panther (Sherman Davies custom)
100 Raelin the Kyrie Warrior (SotM)
100 Emperor Andask
75 Torin
600 points, 14 spaces

for game 2.

Local News

I continue to get new AOA figures, although not all of them. Most are painted. So with the proxy cards for others, I'm playing and will be playing lots of interesting new armies. I met some new contacts at the recent store event at Hex & Co West (there are three of these new chains stores around here in Manhattan); Thrasher Darkrai was there as well. Turns out the same people who own them also partly own The Brooklyn Strategist, which is also a game store, and a long walk from me here.

We have at least one new contact who will be coming over, one intermittant guy will return to play the new Renegade Bonus Scenario #7 a couple of days afer participating in our next group game where we should have six players, which is almost unprecedented--and easier on GM Sherman Davies who won't have to play two armies at once to complete our teams. There are also two others who may form their own group here along with the first guy on a later date. So things are really gonna hum here at The Game Palace!*

That new bonus scenario includes two new "Derelict" cards for one off characters, so you can proxy them. They represent damaged "Mindless" Soulborgs who litter the battlefield where Sonlen & Company are searching for the "heart" of Major Q10, who presumably in the Lore will then be reforged into Major Q11--the figure who will be the next Renegade Games promo available in April with purchases, as the revival of Heroscape continues.

Some of the new regular AOA figures include the first Common Heroes and Squads we're getting from Renegade, and the first units from the new general Volarek. And in our next game I'll be proxying Raelin IV ("Vengeful Raelin" as opposed to AOA's "Evil Raelin") as reestablished as a Jandar figure once again. It turns out she was only faking being controlled by Utgar a second time to get close and attack him. She did make a friendship with Loviatek while under cover, as Raelin herself wants to usurp Utgar, who killed Raelin's family! (The two female kyrie get together for bonding, most recently in Scenario #6). Its nice that Renegade is continuing the Lore, as well as the game.

"Things are really gonna hum this summer
Things are really gonna whirl
Every fella with a girl
Every fella with a girl that he can walk with
Spoon with
Underneath the moon with
Every day will be a sugar plum
And things are gonna hum
Things are gonna hum
Things are really gonna hum!"

There's just a few short hours;
That's all the time we've got
A few short hours;
Before we stir the pot...

I'm going Scaping in the morning
Pow! Bam!
We're gonna play the lot
Feather and tar me
Call out the army
But get me to the game on time!

(With apologies to My Fair Lady)

:coffee: In fact Taeblewalker just posted in sick! I'll be notifying our new prospect from here in Brooklyn to join us instead!

(Edit) Well, last minute madness is nothing new here! Just talked to him on the phone; he'll let us know tomorrow morning if he can make it. If so, he'll borrow some of our armies, since he doesn't own his own stuff or know Delta Plus.

TWO SHERMAN DAVIES GAMES (3/8/25)

Taeblewalker cancelled, one new contact couldn't make it, but a guest joined us (let's call him "GB") So we ended up with five players, with our GM SD playing two armies in the first game. It was a moderately long game and GB had to leave after it, so we had four players with everyone playing one army for the second game. Having already played both of his armies, SD took one of the TW armies, since he'd already brought the minis for them (SD Customs).

This time we had many new AOA units in the armies (listed above on Post #2276).

This post will take a while to write, so tune in later for more! The gang took some photos, and hopefully we'll see them here soon.

GAME ONE (Three Armies vs Three)

Team A

Sherman Davies: Both Armies (Eomer Army Left Flank, Human Torch Army Center)
Thrasher Darkrai: Thyraxis Dragoon Army (Right Flank)

Team B

GB: Iron Lich Viserot Army (Left Flank)
Kolakoski: Black Panther Army (Center)
Chas: Raelin IV "Vengeful Raelin" Proxy; not 'Evil Raelin' (Right Flank)

[All Flanks noted from their own side.]

GB kicked off the game by advancing his Hellforge Mandikor into the enemy territor past the central "island," juiced up by Viserot's Vile Injection markers. This was the first time the group saw the Hellforge on the board. It was very D20 dependent. It had very bad luck attacking, but very good luck defending, and so kept TD's army busy for several turns.

Kolakoski took a while to develop his army, eventually getting part of it across to the central island, where I had the best experience of the game fighting alongside it there. The Human Torch was hard to deal with, but we finally did take him down!

My plan to team up against Grimnak was diverted by how quickly the enemy Templar Cavalry with Eomer reached me both on and to the flank of the island. He took out my Major very quickly, even with Raelin swooping in to avenge him! But I did take out about five of the cavalry, although Drake went down pretty quickly. I also had bad attack die rolls, and didn't get to use many of my special powers. Sonlen did get to do one or two Healings and fight on the island. Finally I had only Bol left, but he did well as he usually does for me; taking out one or two enemy figures while getting his bonus against Large units.

On our Left flank, after losing both the Hellforge and Viscerot, GB's Necrotech Wraithriders chain grabbed a Marro and Nagrub, but again with bad attack rolls, took a while in finishing them off, even from heights! Even Shiori did well, continuing the "weak Ninja successes" made by Otonoshi in other games this week at the Store Event. The Thyraxis Dragoon, blocked at first by other of the owner's units at first, now got into the action; he's a nasty customer! TD had just gotten his new unpainted promo figure the previous Sunday, but now he was already all painted up very creatively, and hit GB's army to good effect!

After a lot of back and forth, Kolakoski was defending with some of his troops on his side of the swamp river at the Center of our side, using the protection of his Raelin II. However, with my and GB's armies going down, he was isolated there, although he fought back hard as the enemy crossed the river from the island.

Although we had to surrender, it was closer at the end than expected, and all together we had taken down a lot of the enemy with us. It was glorious in general for both sides!

GAME TWO (Two Armies vs Two)

Team A

Kolakoski: Ranjit Singh Army
Thrasher Darkrai: Zaax Army

Team B

Sherman Davies: Taeblewalker's Absorbing Man Army
Chas: Xenethrax Army

Sherman Davies opened the ball by moving both of his Marvel heroes Absorbing Man and Captain Britain right over to the central island to start a "Clash of the Titans" against Zaax.
I moved the Ordo up to the island too quickly, and they were wiped out on the first round by shooting Marro Warriors. Yikes!

I flew Xenethrax over to the island to make a first Erupting Earth attack on two of the Marro, but missed both, although I did start dropping the vine glyphs as quickly as possible. But then when SDs Heroes went down, I had to join in the hero duel by sending the dragon against Zaax! I managed to take it down in my luckiest and best moment of the game, but was killed soon afterward.

My Adelbern made a suicide charge against the island, and then Ewashia tried to defend our side of the swamp river, but failed, going down much too fast. I'd failed to drop a water hex under her to boost her defense, not planning to stay on that hex where she was located. Little did I know I'd be there for the rest of the game on height.

This was not my day in either game, but it was great to flex the muscles with so many new Renegade AOA characters being used for the first time by our gang! Sherman's new map was great and easy to build. The Wellspring Water was only used once or twice, even boosted up in healing strength a bit, and once having Ewashia next to it, I got to use one of its four hexes in that way. It was the first time in a while when we had one of our massive games with six armies on a large board. With the weather now improving and more new player contacts being met, I hope that can happen more often.

Well met!

Thanks to chas for hosting us once again at his Game Palace, and to the expanded Gang (minus Taeblewalker unfortunately) for a fun day of gaming. Tons of VC and AoA customs played, with no proxies necessary! We are indeed fortunate.

Flip-flopped again as to which army to play first, as I was (needlessly) doubtful that we'd get a second game in. In Game 1, the Black Panther Army began with a slow roll up the center. As my teammates had such a rough time, I soon found myself fighting alone. My Dividers were destroyed before they could develop, with Cell Divide only working twice on figures that had no same level space to bring back previously destroyed figures. Discovered that Orb of Vengeance Aura activates only once per turn but, even so, first Torin and then the Panther took advantage of it to great effect.

In Game 2, the Ranjit Singh Army had pretty much everything its way while the "Clash of the Titans" was going on. I lost a total of two Marro Warriors, Racheim never needed to move close enough to the enemy to use his augmented Triple Attack, and the Ninjas of the Northern Wind never moved from their initial position in our Start Zone. It was a very short game.

When Sherman Hosts, he generally includes his Superhero and LotR customs (designed to be compatible with Classic) in the mix of draftable units. His Black Panther is one of my favorites, and I field him often. Panther Strike is very cool, and I am always looking for ways to augment it. Orb of Vengeance Aura is just the latest.

Ranjit Singh is an intriguing unit, but unappealingly expensive at 140 points in VC. But, at only 90 in Delta, I could not resist. The next time we use Delta, I'll probably field him again.

TD's TD

Thrasher Darkrai said at the Store Event a week before our last game that he would have his new unpainted promo Thyraxis Dragoon all painted up for our game, and he did. Nice paint job. It was his great paint job on his Pirates which I got to play with that got me juiced up to buy a prepainted AOA Master Set in the first place! (I just got a Battle Box too).

Since Thyraxis Dragoon is the first Renegade AOA promo offered unpainted, I'll have to do mine too. TD painted his TD (Dragoon) just a bit differently than the official paint job; I will too, but in different ways. As an extra advantage to this, we'll be able to tell them apart if they both appear on the same battlefield. Hey Thrasher, maybe you should paint those matching initials somewhere on the figure--as both his name and your artist's signature!

Thanks to Thrasher Darkrai for the painting inspiration, and to "GB" mentioned above for running the local store events these last few months and providing all the promos for them!
Like most beast riders, "Thyraxis the Dragoon" is in fact the rider, the beast ridden is a "rinobug." This confused a lot of people when old riding figures first came out like Grimnak and Tor-Kul-Na.

Getting The SOTM Band Back Together

One of the AOA groups I've been collecting (besides Bears, Kyrie, and Pirates) is the SOTM Heroes. The new bio Lore for the upcoming Major Q11 is now in his book in the Official Units section. It tells about him being rebuilt from Q10 by Kyrie Warrior Queen Khyrion, and has Sonlen helping to orient his new programming.

We've now had Raelin IV ("Vengeful Raelin") proxy played on the table for the first time. Turns out she never really turned Evil, she was just undercover! And we now have the new AOA Sgt. Drake, Shiori and Sonlen out. Sonlen writing to Shiori in the Lore for Bonus Scenario 7--which I've now tried out solo--hopes that they will get their band back together, as in that scenario he recovers the Soulcore of Q10 for the rebuilding of that Soulborg now noted in the Lore.

Some have realized that if they break their Renegade orders for new figures into smaller ones, they will get more free promos. So I should be getting my own Major Q11 soon. Its good to have friends!

Chas Photo Commentary

Photo 1:
Note that there are two Sonlen's on the field, and my only two AOA trees, as I'd just received the Battle Box, and added the trees to the map a minute before the game started! Other figures from that set are also on the field, most for the first time. A crouching Black Panther can be seen to the left of Grimnak. Its rare for us to have two of the same figure in a game, but we all wanted to field some of the new AOA stuff; this time we didn't even have to use proxies, which we've been using since the Haslab offering, now a couple of years ago!

Photo 2: The battlefield is packed with a huge diversity of figures from six different armies (listed upthread): Old Classic, VC Customs, AOA, and Sherman's customs (mostly Supers). If you can identify half of the figures in these pictures, you are a real veteran Scaper. A rare appearance by original SOTM Shiori (we don't generally use her much) can be seen in a couple of the pictures.

Photo 3: See Starfire (middle ground right) and a custom painted Agent Skahen (background left) from a different Nakita Agent pose Sherman did for me years ago!

Photo 4: Here is a good view of Thrasher Darkrai's newly painted Thyraxis Dragoon. I should get to mine some day.

Photo 5: My Zenithrax dragon steps up to drop off her vine glyphs--which nobody dared to step on--and confront the terrible ZZax...

Photo 6: ...and take the scary monster down! My finest moment in either game. Sometimes it takes a dragon to fell a Hulk villain.

You can also see some of my proxy Wellspring Water--old Sparkly Water with a Gold Star.

SCAPE COMING ATTRACTIONS

The Game Masters of Spring

Taeblewalker is up for April, and then Thrasher Darkrai for May. Every month we get a new custom scenario from our gang, usually with a new battlefield map as well.

New AOA Character Availability

Since we allow proxy play, there is no limit to the newest AOA characters appearing on our table, as you can see from the photos above! Currently only two of us are really plunging into buying AOA, but it often appears on our battlefields. Witness the last game with the not yet released Raelin IV proxied by me--I call her Vengeful Raelin, as opposed to Evil Raelin. So I'm printing out the new official cards as soon as they appear on the Renegade site, even if I'm not getting the actual cards and figures. This continues my practice with VC Custom cards as well.

Retooled AOA Walls?

Photos have now appeared onsite of new Walls that stack and seem compatible with the older AOA Master Set walls. This is particularly exciting for me, as it is the only new terrain I've been interested in getting, since I have such a huge collection of the old stuff, including some customs that already cover some of the "new" stuff coming out from Renegade, such as 24 hex snow and sand, winter trees with snow on them from my minis collection, etc.
