I did not like the ending. I was hoping for Katniss to kill President Snow by breaking into his mansion. I did not want Prim to die. I wanted Katniss to end up with Gale. I did not want Katniss to vote yes on having more Games.

Overall, there was too much death for my preference. And everywhere you turned they were talking about suicide. The Avoxes also had very little role in this whole thing. I was really hoping that Katniss would have some sort of big finale where she barely kills Snow. That irked me almost as much as Katniss then killing Coin. The first two parts were by far the best part of the book. Even though, this was still my least favorite book in the series. I wonder if
they'll change anything in the movie version.

Now I have a couple questions. Why did Katniss shoot Coin?

It mentions that the arenas have been torn down. So was there ever a Games for the Capitol Children?

Gee, maybe because Coin tried to kill Katniss, THEN killed Prim?
Okay, sarcasm done now. The truth is is that Coin would have gained more from Prim's death than Snow, who would have probably been destroyed by the populace. Also, it was just about proven Coin tried to kill Katniss with Peeta, so her then killing a whole bunch of people doesn't seem that far-fetched.

It didn't happen the way I expected, to be honest. I thought that Katniss and Gale would end up together. And don't even get me started on the epilogue. But all in all, it was a good book.

My least favorite of the three, but still a good book. One thing I didnt like- Collins tried to make the invasion of the Capitol feel like another go in the arena, but it didn't work- Katniss's frequent allusions to the invasion feeling like being back in the arena felt forced.

One of the interesting twists to me was the revelation (without Collins coming out and saying it) that District 13 doesn't value individual freedom any more than the Capitol does. 13 controls its citizens in different ways, and for different reasons, but in the big picture, the end result is the same. I think it made Katniss's desire for vengeance the only believable motive she could have had for being the Mockingjay.

I didn't like Katniss voting for another round of games, but it fits with her character. She's always been a person of contradictions- capable of compassion and vindictiveness. I also expected a showdown with Snow, but her decision to kill Coin was a nice touch. Killing her saved Panem (we hope) from another Snow, because Coin was every bit the dictator and manipulator that Snow was. She hid it better, and did what she did in the name of fighting evil, but she would have been just as bad. Also, Katniss killing Coin fits perfectly with Katniss's unpredictability- harkening back to the arrow she fired at the gamemakers in the first book, as well as the many times she surprised the gamemakers.

I liked getting to know the Finnick character and hated that he died.

Can't make up my mind about her ending up with Peeta. I think I would have been dissatisfied either way. At least she didn't marry Haymitch.

Well I got the first book this morning, and finished it about five minutes ago! Needless to say, I liked it, and can't wait to read the other two. (unfortunately, I'm ordering them from the library, and the third book has >300 holds)

It was good writing, but definitely my least favorite book in the series. I like happy endings better than realistic ones. And like everyone else has been saying Gale > Peeta (I was kind of hoping Peeta would die to save Katniss and then she wouldn't be forced to choose).

There was a LOT of death. It was sad. I'm not sure what else to say right now. I may have some new thoughts tomorrow after I've had time to think it over. (athough by then this thread will be reburied and no one will see what I've written)

Yeah in the first two books Gale was better than Peeta but in the third book he became really dark and jaded and I no longer felt that Katniss should end up with him.

Though I hated the fact that Collins killed off so many of the characters... it seemed like a really cheap and innefective way to end the series...

This trilogy was under discussion for a bit in the general What Are You Reading? thread, and then I spotted this one lurking down below. Interesting read, thanks all. One bit that people here have complained about though struck me as very well done and the pivotal moment in the third book:

the moment when Katniss votes for another round of Games, with a knowing look at Haymitch.

My interpretation is that this is the moment at which

the leaders of Region 13 become unequivocally the enemy in the same way the Capitol has been until this point. By voting for the Games, Katniss has them show themselves as being as bad as the regime they are replacing, hence her vote.

Anyway, I thought it was a powerful moment in the books' favour. Am I horribly wrong? Am I an idiot? Discuss.
