MILITARY DUO
At the start of the game, choose another Unique Hero that is an Agent or Soldier you control. After revealing an Order Marker on the chosen Hero's card and taking a turn with that Hero, you may take a turn with Winter Soldier. You may not take any additional turns with other figures you control.

CYBERNETIC SOUTHPAW
When attacking or defending against an adjacent figure, Winter Soldier is considered to have the Super Strength special power, and you may count all blanks rolled as skulls.

GOT YOUR SIX
After an enemy figure within 6 clear sight spaces of Winter Soldier inflicts a wound on a figure you control with its attack, you may immediately reveal an "X" Order Marker on this card to roll an unblockable attack die against the attacking figure.

Re: The Book of Winter Soldier (II) (breathing)

This is meant to be a heroic version of Winter Soldier. Ideally he'll team up with Cap or a Falcon (II) that's a soldier (which I have planned). The Agent callout is because he had a run partnering up with Black Widow as well.

Re: The Book of Winter Soldier (II) (breathing)

Fwiw, I was cool with the "Battle Buddy" title once you explained that it was referencing an official military term. :)

Edit: And got 215 on the calculator, so I think you're right there.

Re: The Book of Winter Soldier (II) (breathing)

I find he doesn't really wear the face mask when he's in hero mode, just the domino mask, so I'd go with that one for the card.

Like roping in Agents here, and I like Repentant, since it lets you bring him into the Thunderbolts, which he briefly led... I don't think Songbird was on the team at the time so it doesn't quite work, but it was like 10 issues and not very good so whatever works. :p

Not sure if Buckshot is the right word for the second power, though I appreciate the pun. Isn't buckshot like a shotgun shell? I'm not a gun guy.

What do the skulls do when you're defending with Cybernetic Southpaw?

Yeah, buckshot is a shotgun round. More of a pun than anything, I'm not sure what guns Bucky typically uses.

Nothing at all, it's just letting him defend with Super Strength. It's probably worth splitting the defend part to a second sentence to avoid confusion - I just worded it like this to save space.

It may have a few power interactions. Notably it's relevant with Knockback.

Songbird actually was on the team at the time - the book contrived to have the original line-up back together (minus Zemo). Felt a bit forced, but I did like Bucky leading the team.

Re: The Book of Winter Soldier (II) (breathing)

Yeah, I kinda like it as-is. If, later down the line, we want to give Bucky Cap a shield counterstrike, that would be a neat little hook.

Re: The Book of Winter Soldier (II) (breathing)

Good call with Knockback. With that interaction I'd say keep the power working as-is and just adding a FAQ to explain the skulls aren't typically doing anything on defense.

Cool to hear Bucky's repentant personality makes sense for army building. I just threw it on there because it felt like a thematic personality for him.

Re: The Book of Winter Soldier (II) (breathing)

I like this. Definitely agree on using the domino mask mini, it has better pictures anyways so I was planning to use it here.

I actually really like how Repentant's setting sail as a semi-common synergy personality, it's really cool. :) And even if he hadn't been a member of the Thunderbolts, not like Gamora or Razer are, so it works for me - just give it to characters for who it fits, and the synergies will be things that are thematic, if not in the 'this is something that happened' sense then in the 'this is a thing you can imagine happening in a storyline if these characters met and is some cool, wonky synergy' sense.

Re: The Book of Winter Soldier (II) (breathing)

Good call on the knockback/skulls on defense interaction! I like how that works out on theme. Solid card overall. Big fan of the limited to one other figure bonding powers. He isn't actually toting a lot of offensive potential on his turn, so I can't imagine that bonding turn being all that expensive. I guess that's the only part that feels little off for me. A single ranged attack of 4 is pretty pedestrian for him. Not sure where to put it though. The unblockable ranged counterattack that protects allies instead of himself is pretty neat.

Here's a thought, what if he kicks it up a gear once his partner goes down. Something like this:

MILITARY DUO
At the start of the game, choose another Unique Hero that is an Agent or Soldier you control. After revealing an Order Marker on the chosen Hero's card and taking a turn with that Hero, you may take a turn with Winter Soldier. You may not take any additional turns with other figures you control. If the chosen figure is not in play, after revealing an Order Marker on this card, Winter Soldier may attack one additional time.

Then you get one attack with him and one attack with Black Widow while she's around, and if she goes down first then he starts giving you two attacks as long as he's fighting on his own (OM reveal).

Re: The Book of Winter Soldier (II) (breathing)

He also counts blanks as skulls when adjacent and he'll often have a Captain America +1/+1, so it's a little more offense than it appears at first glance. Bonding figures like this are always a big boost to the figure they bond with so I try to keep their offense on the lower side. (The unblockable die also works when Bucky is wounded, not just his allies.)

I'm cool with that addition if other people like it. It's not something I think he needs, but getting angry after his buddy dies seems in character for Bucky.

Re: The Book of Winter Soldier (II) (breathing)

Mis-read Buckshot. That does give him a little more dynamic offensive potential then.

THOUGHTS ON THE TESTED UNIT'S COST, BALANCE, & DRAFTABILITY: Winter Soldier is a nice figure for any Soldier army. He’s definitely better in a Soldier build with Captain America and Sgt. Rock - with that army, it is really difficult to optimize a first target as the opponent. Sgt. Rock and Cap are difficult to kill, and both boost their allies and bond. Cybernetic Southpaw is especially brutal when boosted by Sgt. Rock and Cap.

In other armies, Winter Soldier felt like a solid addition but nothing too crazy, he’s just a bonding hero with average attack. Tactical Buckshot can get some autowounds if you’re lucky. I’m happy with 220 so far taking all the results into consideration.
