Character Bio - Just as Venom "fathered" Carnage, eventually Carnage himself produced a spawn. Carnage tried to kill the newly-born symbiote, but Venom protected it and gave it a chance to bond with a host. Venom named the new symbiote "Toxin" (after himself). Toxin bonded with Patrick Mulligan, a cop and new father. The Toxin symbiote and Pat eventually formed a shaky bond and started acting as a vigilante, with Pat reining in Toxin's more bloodthirsty impulses.

Re: The Book of Toxin (Design)

NAME = TOXIN
SECRET IDENTITY = PATRICK MULLIGAN

SPECIES = SYMBIOTE
UNIQUENESS = UNIQUE HERO
CLASS = VIGILANTE
PERSONALITY = CONFLICTED

SIZE/HEIGHT = MEDIUM 5

LIFE = 7

MOVE = 6
RANGE = 2
ATTACK = 5
DEFENSE = 4

POINTS = 240

SYMBIOTE TRACKING 3
Instead of his normal move, Toxin may move up to 3 spaces with Symbiote Tracking. When moving with Symbiote Tracking, Toxin has the Flying special power, but may not move up or down more than 40 levels in a single move, and will not take any leaving engagement attacks. After using Symbiote Tracking, you may use it two additional times. If you use it three times in one turn, Toxin cannot attack this turn.

TOXIC SYMBIOSIS 3
After moving and before attacking with Toxin, you may roll up to 3 combat dice. For each:
• skull rolled, add 1 to Toxin's Attack number for this turn.
• shield rolled, subtract 1 from Toxin's Attack number for this turn.
• blank rolled, Toxin may attack one additional time this turn.

SUPER STRENGTH

225 guestimate for cost?

Design looks solid. :up:

Re: The Book of Toxin (Design)

I think folding the tracking stuff into the first power streamlines the design a lot - I think he's about perfect, pending gameplay. :up:

Might go with something more like "Symbiote Tracking 3" for the movement power, though, personally. Rings a little better in my ear.

Re: The Book of Toxin (Design)

I like Johnny's name suggestion.

Otherwise a very clean awesome design. I'm curious to see how the Toxic ability will play out strategy-wise. Seems kind of like a Marro Stinger strategy - never use their power since it's not worth the risk. But the bonuses could be way better, so I'm intrigued.

7 life seems like a lot for him. For being a "lesser" Carnage, shouldn't he be 5? Maybe 6?

Yeah, I could see going for a name like that. I kept the name a verb so that I could just plug it right into the Tendril Swing wording without needing to change anything, but I could tweak that stuff. The current name definitely isn't perfect.

I could see playing it conservatively and skipping the power at times, but I think as compared to the Stingers' thingy, Toxin's power has much higher rewards and lower risks.

Nah. He's more powerful than Carrnage. Beats Carnage and Venom at the same time in his first appearance. But he's a bit up and down, because after that he has a knock-down drag-out with Razorfist (a guy whose thing is that he's a martial artist with knives instead of hands). He's one of those "huge power, still kinda figuring it out" types.

In general, my intended mechanical aesthetic for symbiotes going forward is gonna be "fewer dodge powers, higher Life". They don't have spider-senses* and they generally don't fight dodgy, they fight like horror monsters. Planning to lean into that with Venom (II) and Carnage (II), so Toxin will look a bit more part of a set with them than he does with the current Venom and Carnage.

*a lot of adaptations and retellings give them a spider-sense, but they don't have it in the good ol' 616

Re: The Book of Toxin (Design)

Cool, if it fits it fits. :up: It just stood out to me!

Re: The Book of Toxin (Design)

I think the Carnage II write-up was last siting at like 9 life, so he definitely isn’t an outlier compared to ‘new school’ C3G Symbiotes.

Re: The Book of Toxin (Design)

Flying is a 3 on the calculator. I would put his movement power as less valuable than flying. The extra movement is nice for moving up, but most of the time you're not going to use the extra movement, since it means sacrificing attack.

I could see it being like a 2.5 in value, though, so maybe split the difference to start? 230 or 235, depending on what builds you want to fit into?

Seems just as good as flying to me, if not a hair better (but probably not all the way up to a 4). Flying doesn't get you out of LEAs.

Re: The Book of Toxin (Design)

True. Didn't account for LEAs. Probably fair to put it at 3, then.

Re: The Book of Toxin (Design)

Alright, let's send him to initial at 240 then.

Updated the third post with the art asset stuff. I think I have pictures that are better-focused on the face, but if not I can take some more.

Anywho, got a few other fish to fry before hitting this initial, but y'know, might as well be ready.

Re: The Book of Toxin (Waiting on Initial)

Easy enough to get caught up here so you can tag me in. Really like how folding the tracking into the swing line power worked out here. The 3 combat dice gamble is going to be pretty swingy and difficult to quantify. Like I'm not sure if it really is a 3 point power or not. When you hit 2 skulls and a black, it's great, but when you roll 2 shields and a blank, not as impressive.

Yeah, it'll definitely be a little bit up and down. But I think the fact that he's a Vigilante helps. Like, even if he ends up with 1 or 2 crappy attacks instead of juiced ones, he's in a class where it's easy to set him up for bonding turns and still get good efficiency out of your turns.

Re: The Book of Toxin (Waiting on Initial)

Yeah, Vigilante grouping is a good one for sure.
