Character Bio - The son of Odin and Gaea, the oldest goddess of the Earth, Thor was raised in Asgard. From then on, the goddess Frigga served as Thor's mother. Thor grew up with his step-brother Loki. Loki was always jealous of the favored Thor. Odin had Mjolnir, a mystical hammer enchanted by magic and made of Uru, created for Thor when he became a worthy warrior. Mjolnir was enchanted by Odin to see that only those who are worthy to lift it may lift it. After years of training and accepting different quests to prove he was worthy to have the hammer, Thor still could not lift Mjolnir. Once his young friend Sif was kidnapped and Odin took some warriors with him to rescue her. Odin told Thor to remain in Asgard, but the young man could not stay in Asgard while his friend was in trouble. Thor went into the treasure room of Odin where the hammer was. Thor tried to lift the mighty hammer one more time and this time he was successful. After successfully lifting the hammer Thor became Asgard's greatest warrior. Thor spent several centuries fighting in battles, facing many adventures and doing countless heroic deeds.

-Rulings and Clarifications-
  • Q: Does Thor have to be adjacent to an enemy figure to use his Mjolnir Special Attack or can he just attack one figure from range?
    A: No he does not have to be engaged to use the special attack. As long as the special attack can target at least one figure then you can use it.
  • Q: In what order do the defending figures roll defense dice against Thor's Mjolnir Special Attack?
    A: The attacking player chooses the order the defending figures roll defense dice.

NAME = THOR
SECRET IDENTITY = THOR ODINSON

SPECIES = ASGARDIAN
UNIQUENESS = UNIQUE HERO
CLASS = WARRIOR
PERSONALITY = VALIANT

SIZE/HEIGHT = MEDIUM 5

LIFE = 8

MOVE = 6
RANGE = 1
ATTACK = 8
DEFENSE = 8

POINTS = 430

GOD OF THUNDER STRIKE

Instead of attacking, you may roll the 20-sided die for all figures within 2 spaces of Thor, one at a time. If you roll 16 or higher, that figure receives 3 wounds. This special power can only be used once per game.

MJOLNIR SPECIAL ATTACK
Range 6+Special. Attack 4.
Thor may attack one non-adjacent figure within 6 clear sight spaces, even if Thor is engaged, and any or all figures adjacent to Thor. Roll 4 attack dice once for all affected figures. Each figure rolls defense dice separately.

SUPER STRENGTH
FLYING

Oh, I didn't intentionally leave out the overhang part, that was just an oversight. I could see that both ways - no lightning because of the overhang, or the lightning blows right through the overhang. Either way.

Re: Thor - Design Phase

Any chance of making his class "Champion"? It seems like he should go the same way as Wonder Woman.

Re: Thor - Design Phase

I wouldn't be completely against it, because it certainly fits, but I was hoping we could come up some sorts of synergy in the future for Deities...?

Re: Thor - Design Phase

Who else would you see as a Diety in the future? If they were mostly Asgardians, then it might make more sense to go that way for synergy.

Re: Thor - Design Phase

He looks great, GreyOwl, but double shields with 6 defense might be too much. To compare:

Superman odds:
1 or more shields - 99%
2 or more shields - 94%
3 or more shields - 77%
4 or more shields - 50%
5 or more shields - 23%
6 or more shields - 6%
7 shields - 1%

Thor odds:
2 or more shields - 91%
4 or more shields - 65%
6 or more shields - 32%
8 or more shields - 10%
10 or more shields - 2%
12 shields - .1%

This will put Thor's defense significantly better than Superman's defense. In my opinion, Thor should have the stronger attack, but Supes should have the better "D".

Here's Thor's odds with 5 Defense w/ double shields:

2 or more shields - 87%
4 or more shields - 54%
6 or more shields - 21%
8 or more shields - 4%
10 shields - .4%

Even with a reduced defense of 5, Thor's defense is slightly better than Supes. Combine that with a ranged Special Attack and a nasty Thunder Strike and +1 attack, this Thor is closer to 450 pts.

Re: Thor - Design Phase

hmm ... well his defense should probably be dropped to at least 5 (4 would look too low, though!). But it sounds like more might need to be done to depower him a tad. 450 is a bit too high, IMO, but it's not out of the ballpark.

Re: Thor - Design Phase

I decided about 6 months ago that double shields was almost broken for any figures over 4 defense. The numbers really start to exponentially climb past four. Automatic shields are better, IMO. Problem is, they're just so "blah".

Re: Thor - Design Phase

Here are Thor's odds with 4 Defense w/ double shields:

2 or more shields - 80%
4 or more shields - 41%
6 or more shields - 11%
8 shields - 1%

EDIT: This really seems to be spot on, but 4 defense looks so pathetic on a Thor card. Plus, Wonder Woman would eat him alive.

Re: Thor - Design Phase

Who else would you see as a Diety in the future? If they were mostly Asgardians, then it might make more sense to go that way for synergy.

Besides the Asgardians, there are the Greco-Roman deities in Marvel, like Hercules, Neptune, and Zeus. Furthermore, I could see using a class of Deity on figures like Galactus or Beyonder, too. In DC, there are Kryptonian gods, Greek gods, etc.

Re: Thor - Design Phase

I see Galactus and Beyonder more as "Entities" ... I guess part of it is I see "Diety" as more of a species than a class.
Also ... do we really want to have much synergy with units of that power level? It seems like they should be more stand alone.

Re: Thor - Design Phase

Here's a question ... does he need Shields of Valor? Maybe he works just fine with 8 life and 7 defense (he'd still be tougher than Hulk - and have possibly better offensive potential with his powers). I think he'd be around 400ish and maybe more with his crowd control/range abilities of his special attack.

Re: Thor - Design Phase

Got some wording ideas for you...

THUNDER STRIKE
Instead of attacking, you may roll the 20-sided die for all figures within 2 spaces of Thor. If you roll 16 or higher, place up to 6 Wound Markers between any of those figure's cards. Thunder Strike may only be used once per game.

Reducing the possible damage that attack could do might help reduce the cost a little. Just an idea.

MJOLNIR THROW SPECIAL ATTACK
Range 1 + Special. Attack 4.
All figures adjacent to Thor are affected by Mjolnir Throw Special Attack. Roll attack dice once for all adjacent figures. Choose a figure to attack within 6 clear line spaces of Thor and attack one additional time. Each figure rolls defense dice separately.

Maybe that will help, or at least put you into a new thought process.

Re: Thor - Design Phase

I am very excited about this custom. I love what you have for Thunder Strike. Although, since it is presumably a lightning attack, shouldn't it be called Lightning Strike? Also, Wolfhunter's idea for the 6 wounds being spread out is kinda cool. :up:

More on this later...

Re: Thor - Design Phase

Meh ... since Thunderstrike can only be used once per game, I really don't mind the power level of it as is.
That said, Wulfhunter's wording for the hammer throw SA, is a big improvement. :) Looks sharp!

Re: Thor - Design Phase

I agree with Bats. As a once a game power, I don't mind it being powerful.

Re: Thor - Design Phase

I personally like both suggestions made by Wulfhunter. I am not crazy about the idea of Thor using this to possibly decimate WW and Supes and oneshot kill Hal all on the same turn. That is over a thousand points of figures he could nearly take out. If were to lead with this and then have no damage himself I think he coudl take them all out. Especially since its a place wounds, not attack thing, it would bypass GL's marker power and Green Shield. Just my :2cents:

Dang, that makes some since. However, the power is a one time use only, and is a D20 based power. Also, Thor could decide to place all 6 wounds on Superman, so either way your concern that he could destroy too much too fast would not be addressed in either direction.

Re: Thor - Design Phase

We can keep it powerful without making it game-breaking. What about "on a 16 or higher...may roll 4 unblockable attack dice..."?

Well, yeah, but he wouldn't be able to decimate a 1000 points worht of figures, just mostly kill Superman, which I am OK with. Especially on a d-20 power.

We can keep it powerful without making it game-breaking. What about "on a 16 or higher...may roll 4 unblockable attack dice..."?
I like this even better. Realistically, why would you ever put less than 4 wounds as it is currently written? This puts an element of chance in it, which to me is the second key component to Heroscape, right behind strategy.

Got some wording ideas for you...

THUNDER STRIKE
Instead of attacking, you may roll the 20-sided die for all figures within 2 spaces of Thor. If you roll 16 or higher, you may place up to 6 Wound Markers between among any of those figure's cards.

Choose a figure to attack within 6 clear line sight spaces of Thor and attack one additional time. Each figure rolls defense dice separately.

Maybe that will help, or at least put you into a new thought process.

Questions: With THUNDER STRIKE, are you rolling the 20-sided die once for all figures collectively, or once for each figure separately? As it is worded now, it seems unclear. Without the "you may," you could be forced to put Wound Markers on your own figures cards.

With MJOLNIR THROW SPECIAL ATTACK, does he need LOS on the non-adjacent figure?

Re: Thor - Design Phase

I think THUNDER STRIKE with 4 autowounds to all figures within range is a bit too much (see Spidey's Post for his genius explanation), but I think 6 wounds divided amount them wouldn't be too bad.
I also think that Balantai makes an excellent argument about SHIELD OF VALOR being a bit much at 6, but reasonable at 5.

Besides those 2 things I very much like how this card is going and I am eager to play/playtest it in the future.

All I can think about thought this thread is Hulk vs Thor.:twisted: I love that movie.
