Basic Side Card:
Spoiler Alert!

The figure used for this unit is a D&D Minis figure from the Savage Encounters set. The model name is Nightwalker.

Character Bio: People of Arctorus tell tales of a legendary entity that is like a thundercloud that walks the land. This creature is a violent living storm that destroys everything in its wake and stuns the strongest of men. Beware Valhalla, Vydar has summoned the Varja!

PHANTOM WALK
The Varja can move through all figures and is never attacked when leaving an engagement.

LIVING STORM
At any point while moving, when the Varja leaves a space occupied by another figure, you must roll the 20 sided die. If you roll a 17 or higher, remove all Order Markers from that figure's Army Card (or cards if that figure has more than one Common card for that figure). Figures may not be affected by Living Storm more than once per turn.

-Rulings and Clarifications-
  • The Varja is on a large D&D base (Single hex)

Q: Can I affect more than one member of a common squad with Living Storm?
A: Yes,
you may roll for multiple members of a squad in a turn but you may not roll for any individual squad figure more than once

Q: Is it intentional that The Varja has a completely gray hit zone?
A: Yes.
The Varja may not be targeted for an attack by a non adjacent figure.

Q: Does Living Storm affect friendly figures that the Varja moves through?
A: Yes.

Q: If the Varja moves from one space occupied by a double-space figure to the other space it occupies, does it roll for Living Storm?
A: No.
The Varja only rolls for Living Storm when it leaves a figure, not when it moves "inside" of one.

Q: If the Varja leaves a space occupied by another figure and enters a space adjacent to an opponent's Greater Ice Elemental, which happens first, Living Storm or Ice Spikes?
A: Living Storm occurs first because leaving a space occurs before entering a new space.

Maybe this is a noob question but what am I missing here? Can he simply not be hit and is therefore indestructible?

You don't need line of sight when you are engaged---if you're standing next to him you can hit him.

Note that you can hit him with Explosive Special Attacks if he's engaged with the targeted figure.

The Varja can also be attacked by any special attack or special power that refers to "clear sight spaces," like Sonlen's Dragon Swoop, since clear sight only requires you to see any part of the mini, gray or red.

Huh

The Varja can also be attacked by any special attack or special power that refers to "clear sight spaces," like Sonlen's Dragon Swoop, since clear sight only requires you to see any part of the mini, gray or red.

Is there a special attack that refers to clear sight spaces? I thought all special attacks chose a target based on hit zones unless it was something like the grenade attack or the mind blasts that specifically say they don't need clear sight.

~Dysole, trying to figure out the proper wording for the R&C

Not quite what you're after, but Mimring chooses based on spaces (and so the Varja is vulnerable to that).

Yeah, Mimring's is the only one that comes to mind off the top of my head. I know Deathwalker 9000 and the shotgun cowboys use the words "clear sight" in their special attacks, but that wording is incorrect; they need to see the red hitzones of their initial targets.

Also, the OP is incorrect; the Varja was designed and tested as a double-spaced figure.

Thanks. Not sure where I read that.

~Dysole, who thinks the current wording for whether the Varja can be hit by range is fine

Also, the OP is incorrect; the Varja was designed and tested as a double-spaced figure.

I'm sure I saw somewhere this last month he was a single space figure...

Besides that, The Varja will be great against those pesky Cathar Spearmen. Having 3 range means The Varja can attack the Spearmen without needing to risk wounds from Braced Spear, and not having a hit zone means the Spearmen have to move adjacent to the Varja, which removes the bonus from Impale and negates Reach, leaving the Spearmen open to some Living Storm Rolls.

I didn't realize until just now that The Varja renders all of the Cathar's powers useless against him. (Not completely, Braced Spear could still be used, but only if The Varja's player makes it happen.)

I'm loving this guy, I'm so glad I picked him up months back so I have him ready to go with his release :D

What was the reasoning behind giving him 3 range and not Reach?

Well

What was the reasoning behind giving him 3 range and not Reach?

No idea but I've kind of envisioned it like [ame="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ijx-t4xshAE"]this[/ame].

~Dysole, who watched that movie a lot as a kid

Also, the OP is incorrect; the Varja was designed and tested as a double-spaced figure.

This picture is incorrect then? He looks like he fits perfectly fine on a single space. I know mine's does (when I cut his base).

varja_original.jpg

I think you have the second one. I have both, the one with two hands down is HUGE and has to be on a double space. The second one has one hand up (the official one) and is like half the size of him and fits easily on a single base.

  • THE AXEGRINDERS OF BURNING FORGE : Fearless Advantage
As a huge figure, The Varja causes The Axegrinders of Burning Forge to roll an extra die when attacking or defending against it due to their FEARLESS ADVANTAGE special power.

  • MAJOR J15 : Breaching Scythe
As a huge figure, The Varja causes Major J15 to add 1 automatic skull when making a normal attack against it, due to Major J15's BREACHING SCYTHE special power.

  • SIR DENRICK : Giant Killer
As a huge figure, The Varja causes Sir Denrick to roll 2 extra attack dice against it with Sir Denrick's GIANT KILLER special power.

  • ZOMBIE HULK : Zombie Rises Again
As a huge figure, The Varja causes an opposing Undead Savage that destroys it to replace it with a previously destroyed Zombie Hulk due to Zombie Hulk's ZOMBIE RISES AGAIN special power.

The Varja can also be attacked by any special attack or special power that refers to "clear sight spaces,"
Is there a special attack that refers to clear sight spaces?

NOTE: The following has been edited based on subsequent posts, to move things like explosions and shotguns to the "indirect" list.

I believe the following special attacks and d20 special powers can directly target The Varja with a non-adjacent attack or direct damage:
  • Airborne Elite: GRENADE SPECIAL ATTACK: "Choose a figure to attack. No clear line of sight is needed. Any figures adjacent to the chosen figure are also affected by the Grenade Special Attack."
  • Atlaga the Kyrie Warrior: ULLAR'S BOLT OF THE WITHERWOOD: "you may choose any opponent's figure within 5 clear sight spaces of Atlaga."
  • Brimstone: HEAT BLAST SPECIAL ATTACK: "Heat Blast Special Attack affects all figures within 2 clear sight spaces of Brimstone."
  • Cxurg'gyath: PSIONIC EXPLOSION SPECIAL ATTACK: "Choose a figure to attack. Each opponent's figure adjacent to the chosen figure is also affected by the the Psionic Explosion Special Attack. Cxurgy'gyath does not need clear line of sight to attack with Psionic Explosion Special Attack."
  • Deadeye Dan: SHARPSHOOTER: "you may choose any non-adjacent figure within 10 clear sight spaces of Deadeye Dan."
  • Jarek Guy: PLASMA GRENADE SPECIAL ATTACK: "Choose a figure to attack. No clear line of sight is needed. Any figures adjacent to the chosen figure are also affected by Plasma Grenade Special Attack."
  • Mind Flayer Mastermind: PSIONIC BLAST SPECIAL ATTACK: "This Mind Flayer Mastermind does not need clear line of sight to attack with Psionic Blast Special Attack."
  • Runa: HELM OF MINTONSOUL AURA: "you must roll the 20-sided die for all figures within 3 clear sight spaces of Runa, one at a time."
  • Sonlen: DRAGON SWOOP: "you may choose any figure within 4 clear sight spaces of Sonlen."
  • Sudema: STARE OF STONE: "choose any figure within 4 clear sight spaces of Sudema."
  • Tul-Bak-Ra: MIND BLAST SPECIAL ATTACK: "Tul-Bak-Ra does not need clear line of sight to attack with Mind Blast Special Attack."
It seems the following can do it indirectly by targeting a figure near The Varja:
  • Blue Wyrmling: FLEDGLING LIGHTNING BREATH SPECIAL ATTACK: "You may also choose one other figure within 3 clear sight spaces of the targeted figure to be affected by Fledgling Lightning Breath Special Attack."
  • Deathwalker 9000: EXPLOSION SPECIAL ATTACK: "Any figures adjacent to the chosen figure are also affected by the Explosion Special Attack. Deathwalker only needs a clear sight shot at the chosen figure."

  • Jorhdawn: RAIN OF FLAME SPECIAL ATTACK: "Any figures adjacent to the chosen figure are also affected by the Rain of Flame Special Attack."
  • Jotun: WILD SWING SPECIAL ATTACK: "Any figures adjacent to the chosen figure are also affected by the Wild Swing Special Attack."
  • Kursus: SONIC FISTS SPECIAL ATTACK: "Any figures adjacent to the chosen figure are also affected by Sonic Fists Special Attack."
  • Myrddin: CALL LIGHTNING SPECIAL ATTACK: "Any figures adjacent to the chosen figure are also affected by Call Lightning Special Attack. Myrddin only needs a clear sight shot at the chosen figure."
  • Quahon: LIGHTNING BREATH SPECIAL ATTACK: "You may also choose a second figure within 3 clear sight spaces of the targeted figure and a third figure within 2 clear sight spaces of the second figure to be affected by Lightning Breath Special Attack."
  • Zelrig: MAJESTIC FIRES SPECIAL ATTACK: "Any figures adjacent to the targeted figure are also affected by Majestic Fires Special Attack."
The following do not inflict wounds, but can have some kind of other effect on The Varja from range:

Powers like DW9k's Explosion and the shotgun blasts do require a hitzone in order to choose the figure as the initial target. The statement " only needs a clear sight shot at the chosen figure" just means that you don't need to see the hitzones of the adjacent figures.

I don't understand that. Here's what the rules say:

Clear Sight: To determine if a figure has clear sight to another, check that figure's Target Point. If you can see any part of another figure that it wants to affect (including gray non-Hit Zones), then that figure has clear sight. Just make sure that it is within the specified range for the power.

But don't attacks need to be able to see a hit zone unless otherwise specified?

~Dysole, admitting the wording is vague

That's just for clear sight. For attacking you need Line of Sight:

Battle for the Underdark Rulebook said:
• Line of Sight: To attack a targeted figure, your figure must be able to "see" it from its location. Unlike Range, the Line of Sight is an imaginary straight line between your attacking figure's Target Point and the targeted figure's Hit Zone; it has nothing to do with the spaces on the battlefield. If the targeted figure is (for example) behind a rock outcrop or a cliff, so that your figure can't "see" it, then no attack is possible. The only exception to this rule is if a figure is engaged with or adjacent to another figure. A figure does not need Line of Sight to attack a figure that it is engaged with or adjacent to.

To determine if there is a clear Line of Sight, check the Target Point (the green dot on your figure's Army Card) and the Hit Zone (the red area on the targeted figure's Army Card). Then get behind your figure and look to see if its Target Point can "see" any part of the targeted figure's Hit Zone. If so, there is a clear Line of Sight.

If players disagree about whether or not there is a clear Line of Sight, have an independent person make the call. If this is not possible, then roll the 20-sided die; the high roller wins the dispute.

The glossary defines the two as such:

Battle for the Underdark Rulebook said:
Clear Sight: To determine if a figure has clear sight to another, check that figure's Target Point. If you can see any part of another figure that it wants to affect (including gray non-Hit Zones), then that figure has clear sight. Just make sure that it is within the specified range for the power.

Line of Sight: Line of Sight is the imaginary straight line between an attacking figure's Target Point and a defending figure's Hit Zone. If the attacking figure can "see" any part of the defending figure's Hit Zone, the attacking figure can attack.

I think it's an ineffective way to communicate that line of sight is not needed for adjacent figures, only the initial target, even though adjacent figures are affected by the attack.

Well I think it's safe to say the 4th Mass absolutely hate this guy. They'll have to move and lose WTF to even try to hit him. Then he can just disengage to try his order marker thing, stop 2 spaces away and pop another 4th figure. Great job on this one C3V, nothing can stop this guy. Not even X17. This guy has the potential to be my all time favorite figure.
