Re: The Book of Thanos (Infinity Quest) - Breathing

NAME - THANOS

SPECIES - ETERNAL
UNIQUENESS - EVENT HERO
CLASS - CONQUEROR
PERSONALITY - UNYIELDING
SIZE/HEIGHT - MEDIUM 6

LIFE 8
MOVE 6
RANGE 6
ATTACK 6
DEFENCE 7

1,200 POINTS

INCOMPLETE GAUNTLET
Start the game with the Glyph of Infinity Gauntlet on this card. Thanos can equip glyphs as though he were a Unique Hero and when he rolls the 20-sided die for the Glyph of Infinity Gauntlet, add 1 to the roll for each special power it has gained, to a maximum of +5.

INFINITY QUEST
At the start of the game all other players, starting with the player to your left and going clockwise, must place a Glyph of Infinity that is not in the game on an empty space on the battlefield. Then, you may choose a Glyph of Infinity that is not in the game and equip it. At the end of each round, the player who won initiative must place a Glyph of Infinity that is not in the game on an empty space on the battlefield. Glyphs cannot be placed within 3 spaces of any other glyph or any player's figure.

*SNAP!*
Once per game, instead of taking a turn with Thanos, if he is equipped with the Glyph of Infinity Gauntlet and it has the special powers of all six Glyphs of Infinity, you may roll the 20-sided die for all other figures in play, one at a time. If you roll 11 or higher, that figure is destroyed. Thanos cannot use his Incomplete Gauntlet special power for the rest of the game.

REWRITTEN DEATH
Once per game, if Thanos would be destroyed, you may instead remove all Wound Markers from this card and end the round.

I'll be frank here - no idea where to start this guy cost wise. :)
Not sure when I'll be able to get to his initial, but I figured I'd start him now.

INFINITY QUEST[/B]
At the start of the game, place the Glyph of Infinity Gauntlet and a Glyph of Infinity on this card. Then, the player to your right places a Glyph of Infinity on any empty space on the battlefield. Repeat this process until six Glyphs of Infinity are in play. Glyphs cannot be placed within 5 spaces of Thanos or another Glyph of Infinity, and cannot share a name with a Glyph already in play.

So check my math here...

2 player game...

If I have Thanos I start the game by putting the Gauntlet and any one glyph on his card. My opponent places a glyph on the battlefield.

Then in the repeat this process kicks in...

So do I then place another glyph on Thanos's card and my opponent places another one on the battlefield.

I'm guessing that's not the intent and that after the first one is placed on the card the rest are distributed on the field but I'm not sure if that is completely clear therefore I'm posting here so future generations can read this :)

You can't be Frank...I'm Frank. You have to be someone else.

Re: The Book of Thanos (Infinity Quest) - Breathing

Yeah, the wording needs a tweak - right now Thanos doesn't have enough hands for all those gauntlets he'd end up wearing. Gimme a sec.

You're quite right, and the wording here is mostly placeholder, mostly since I don't know how you'd word what I want correctly and elegantly. We're in uncharted ground here.

Maybe she could be Stein. Then Japes and LO would be Frank n' Stein.

INFINITY QUEST
At the start of the game, place the Glyph of Infinity Gauntlet and a Glyph of Infinity on this card. Then, your opponents each place a Glyph of Infinity on any empty space on the battlefield, one at a time, until five Glyphs of Infinity are on the battlefield. Glyphs of Infinity cannot be placed with this special power within 5 spaces of Thanos or another Glyph of Infinity, and cannot share a name with another Glyph on the battlefield.

Re: The Book of Thanos (Infinity Quest) - Breathing

That would mean Thanos's player doesn't place any of the extra glyphs. Are we good with that?

Re: The Book of Thanos (Infinity Quest) - Breathing

Something else to consider - you could maybe have them pop up once a round (have the opponent with the highest initiative roll place one) instead of placing them all at the start of the game, and have that keep happening until all the gems are in play.

Re: The Book of Thanos (Infinity Quest) - Breathing

That would delay his ability to gather them some, but would definitely feel "quest"-like. I like it! :)

I think that first power should have the word "choose" in it somewhere just to make it clear you're choosing which you place.

The last power should probably be "would be destroyed" since if he actually is destroyed, he can't use any powers. :-D

I like the power set and direction and am excited to see how it goes! I can tell you from experience that Event Heroes can be a real challenge, but it's so much fun pushing the envelope with these larger than life designs.

Re: The Book of Thanos (Infinity Quest) - Breathing

I actually feel less uneasy for this Event Hero than I have recently. :)
The low Life (for an Event Hero) and one re-spawn makes for an interesting but (hopefully) not overwhelming power house.
I like the one per round gem release, or maybe start with one or two on the field and then one per round.
That finger snap is going to be brutal but I imagine difficult to execute. Going to be some fun playtests!
A scenario in a card. :)

Re: The Book of Thanos (Infinity Quest) - Breathing

I'm fine with either alternating or glyphs popping in every round. The Gems are known to do that - I'm thinking of the bit in Hickman's Avengers where the Time Gem suddenly appears and throws everyone off. It's a bit weird and feels a bit like a "quest" and more like a... whack-a-mole-esque minigame?

As I think of it though, it makes it pretty hard for the Thanos player to plan out his route, which I think is a big loss. Sitting at the start of the game and saying "okay, Power is here, Space is here, Reality is here, so I should take him out first and that puts me in a good position to attack this guy" - and vice-versa for the opponent.

But yeah, either works.

Otherwise I think we're good. I'd honestly just go with "SNAP!" for the second power, though. Very evocative.

Re: The Book of Thanos (Infinity Quest) - Breathing

Browsing here so apologies if it's already been said, but if some of the stones entered play once per round, or on a specific round, then you wouldn't have to worry about the possibility of someone figuring out how to get all 6 gems to Thanos by the end of the 2nd round.

Re: The Book of Thanos (Infinity Quest) - Breathing

The nice balancing effect is that in multi-player games you'd have them out a lot sooner but would also have a lot more players trying to deny Thanos.

My one concern is it might make it too difficult for him to pull off his big move and when he pulls off his big move it's still potentially close to as punitive to his army as to the enemy army (assuming he brings an army with him), so I worry there's potential for a negative/unsatisfying play experience for the Thanos player. I guess it depends on, in playtesting, whether the Thanos player really feels like they have a chance to fulfill their quest. I think that's a key - not if they do, but if they felt like it were a reasonable possibility.

Re: The Book of Thanos (Infinity Quest) - Breathing

So... how are we planning to work the distribution then? I'm hearing a lot of ideas but not much in the way of a clear direction.
Fortunately, I'm not really in a rush here - I'm sort of breaking over Yuletide to spend time with my family, doubt I could manage a test before New Year.

Re: The Book of Thanos (Infinity Quest) - Breathing

Play some games with your fam and try out the different ways.

Unfortunately, this is one I'm keeping a little secret from them - my Mum knows I have something I'm doing on here in the pipeline, but I've also told her it's a surprise and so she doesn't want it spoiled. :) I'd much rather decide on an agreed starting point and start running tests early 2019 if that's acceptable.

Re: The Book of Thanos (Infinity Quest) - Breathing

OK, then just pick one and we'll figure it out during playtesting.

Re: The Book of Thanos (Infinity Quest) - Breathing

Agreed. Pick the one that sounds the most fun/interesting based on the discussion, then we can adjust if needed once it gets tested.

If you're polling, I think this is my vote, but I could see pros and cons of a lot of directions. :)
