The Book of Superman (Kal-El)

Re: The Book of Superman

Here is the simple answer: When we designed Superman in the World's Finest set, we were adding 13 new cards to a game that only had 10 other cards. We wanted Superman, but we didn't want to break the game with an A+++ unit. So, we designed Heroic Duty as more of a detriment power than a beneficial power. We knew we wanted Superman to be powerful and reign supreme at 400 points (a point cost that we have now shattered), but we also knew that this Superman needed to have some built in weaknesses. The weaknesses we gave him were: Man of Steel doesn't work on Special Attacks, He is a Kryptonian and we created a Green Kryptonite Glyph, and he can be tricked into taking leaving engagement attacks when he tries to save others with Heroic Duty.

If you need help understanding the theme behind it, Superman puts his life at risk and in extreme situations because his MOST iconic "power" is he is a savior. But the truth is, we needed him to be stoppable.

We do have another Superman version sitting in the sanctum right now though, and it is very different from this one. I hope you will be around next spring to enjoy him when he is released. :D

Does he have a black cape?

That is good news and, God willing, I will be here to enjoy, as I already do, all of C3G's current and future offerings. As I get more comfortable with the process, who knows, I might just get more involved instead of being a backseat Monday morning driving quarterback with 80/20 hindsight.:D

Thanks for the history lesson also. It will be interesting to see over the next few years how earlier designs will give way to 2.0s since the point cost ceiling has moved up and, as in Superman's case, there are some many powers to choose from it is hard to whittle it down to 2 or 3.

Thanks again for all of your hard work,
G-O

Re: The Book of Superman

Also, just as a quick sidenote on the whole symbol thing, we had a heavy debate in the beginning as to whether or not to allow for the flying symbol. We voted to do so by the thinnest of margins and I'm glad we did (I voted for it) but we also established an aesthetic right there that was against adding a bunch of symbols to the card. We pretty much decided that it was the flying symbol, the super strength symbol, and that's it.
There's a reason we're doing these customs as Heroscape cards, after all, instead of just Heroclix customs.

Re: The Book of Superman

I think that one decision really set the tone for all future designs in a huge way. I can't imagine how dumbed down figures would have to be fit in all the Flying text. The Lanterns in particular come to mind. They'd be all stats and no flavor.

Re: The Book of Superman

Heck, I remember thinking there was room for up to 5 symbols down there, but I was kind of being belligerent when I commented that way back when. ;)

Yeah, a card with a symbol for Superstrength, Flying, Superspeed, Healing Factor, and Magical Defense (the latter being widely used powers) would be something.

-Strategy, Tactics and Tips-
  • Heroic Duty -
    Positive: With Superman's Heroic Duty, weaker units or cheerleaders can gain the protection of the Man of Steel. These units can also be used to entice an opponent into combat with Superman. (A3n)

    Negative: Superman's Heroic Duty is also his weakness. With his Man of Steel power & a defense of 7, Superman is very strong defensively however due to Heroic Duty he is open to "leaving engagement" attacks that by-pass this defense. Be wary of engaging Superman with an opponent that is within 3 spaces of a friendly unit. (A3n)
  • Kryptonian figures have a number of specific counters to look out for: beware memories of their homeworld, as a Glyph of Green Kryptonite, a Kryptonite Blast Special Attack from Lex Luthor, or other Kryptonians, who ignore Man of Steel. Current Kryptonians include: Doomsday, Supergirl, and Superman. (Note that Superman is also effective against many of your opponents' Kryptonian figures.)

Re: The Book of Superman

I noticed the sincere lack of information in the 2nd post...

NAME = SUPERMAN

SECRET IDENTITY = KAL-EL

SPECIES = KRYPTONIAN
UNIQUENESS = UNIQUE HERO
CLASS = CHAMPION
PERSONALITY = VALIANT

SIZE/HEIGHT = MEDIUM 5

LIFE = 7

MOVE = 8
RANGE = 1
ATTACK = 7
DEFENSE = 7

POINTS = 400

X-RAY VISION
Before moving, if Superman is not engaged, you may look at the power side of any one Glyph that is Symbol Side up.

MAN OF STEEL
When rolling defense against a normal attack from a figure who is not a Kryptonian, all blanks rolled count as extra shields.

HEROIC DUTY
If a friendly figure that is within 3 spaces of Superman would roll defense dice against a normal, non-adjacent attack, instead Superman must move adjacent to the figure if he is able to. Superman must roll defense and take any resulting wounds from the attack instead of the friendly figure. When Superman uses Heroic Duty, he will take all leaving engagement attacks.

SUPER STRENGTH

FLYING

Re: The Book of Superman

Nice job cwidje:)

Back in the day, we didn't have the "books of" set up the way we do in that regard. If I recall correctly, Whitestuff, one of the former members of the group had requested that we start doing the second post the way it currently is. Part of the idea behind that was to make it easier when making new designs and reusing existing powers, it would be easier to just copy/past the text from the second post of the design with the power being reused, rather than typing it all up from the card. It can also be used for copy/pasting when reusing part of a power and tweaking it.

It also makes it easier to reference the power/text during the design phase that design so that others can copy/paste it with suggested tweaks or edits.

Re: The Book of Superman

I was referencing it for my Clark Kent design, then I realized that it didn't exist.

Re: The Book of Superman

Yeah - I think the advent of the Second Post System has really done wonders with post-finalization bookkeeping and management. So big props to whitestuff (or whoever came up with it)!

Re: The Book of Superman

Thanks for the post, C-Wedgie, and for the update here, quozl! :)

Re: The Book of Superman

It's also helpful when the card pdfs are down...

Re: The Book of Superman

the mini pdf is slightly different from the comic pdf. the red is darker, and the text is similair to later cards, not really a big deal, i even prefer it this way.

Re: The Book of Superman

Both versions of the card have a typo in Heroic Duty, 'wnhin' should be 'within'.

Re: The Book of Superman

Great Superman! I noticed a typo. In the power HEROIC DUTY, you typed "Superman must roll defense and take any resuting wounds." I am pretty sure you meant resulting, right? Anyway, great unit.

Re: The Book of Superman

Wow, how many times have I read that and not spotted that? Probably a thousand, at least! :duh:

At least we got the SP text right. :p

That would only have come in since I had to recreate the card before SirG had added the text to the SP. So if you had the original version GO created it should be ok.
