Re: The Book of Superman Flyover Story - Breathing

NAME = SUPERMAN FLYOVER
STORY CARD

POINTS = 100

STORY PROLOGUE =

- A figure with the identity of Bruce Wayne must be in your army.
- You may not have a figure with the identity of Kal-El in your army.

STORY SET UP =
None.

STORY RULES =

X-RAY RECON

Before rolling for initiative, you may look at the power-side of any one Glyph that is symbol-side up. Add 1 to your initiative roll for each enemy figure on the battlefield to a maximum of +4.

WORLD’S FINEST FRIEND
If a figure you control with the identity of Bruce Wayne or a friendly figure within 3 spaces of Bruce Wayne is attacked by an enemy figure and at least 1 skull is rolled, you may remove an unrevealed Order Marker from Bruce Wayne’s Army Card to ignore that attack. If you do, roll two unblockable attack dice against the attacking figure.

NEEDED ELSEWHERE
After using the World's Finest Friend special power, you must remove this card from the game.

Spoiler Alert!

I'm not sure that we need to be as harsh as to ban Kal-Els from a friendly player's army. The idea is just to mimic drafting restrictions, right? They don't care about friendly players I don't think.

A cap on the initiative boost might feel needed, just to avoid it being an unbeatable proposition when going up against big squad builds.

Hyped to have another Story Card!

Re: The Book of Superman Flyover Story - Breathing

Max of +8? +7 to feel more "Super"?

I guess I could just do your Kal-El, yeah. Felt mildly thematically weird to have him on your side in a team match, but there are other weirder situations allowable now, so you're probably right that it's unnecessary.

Re: The Book of Superman Flyover Story - Breathing

I might spice World's Finest Friend up a little, since it's a once per game thing. Like I picture Supes either absolutely socking the enemy (maybe a one-time attack of 8?) or grabbing Bruce and whisking him away like Flash does to Ollie in the Arrowverse crossovers.

WORLD’S FINEST FRIEND
When a friendly figure with the identity of Bruce Wayne is attacked and at least one skull is rolled, you may ignore the attack, immediately end the attacking figure’s turn, and roll one unblockable attack die against that figure. Then place that Bruce Wayne on any space within 8 spaces of his initial placement, ignoring leaving engagement attacks, and remove this card from the game.

And I'm not sure you need Needed Elsewhere if using WFF removes the card anyway.

Overall looks fun, and I'm excited to see more Story Cards!

Re: The Book of Superman Flyover Story - Breathing

Needed Elsewhere puts a timer on World's Finest Friend and the initiative boost to make them less swingy.

I could juice up WFF a bit. Avenger's Thor does 2 unblockables, so might consider going that way.

Re: The Book of Superman Flyover Story - Breathing

I like the drafting restriction of no other Kal-Els. This is more trying to represent Superman appearing in Batman stories, so I think that helps capture that. Doesn't need to be viable in a 2 player Justice League game or anything like that IMO, because the team up is already being repped.

Re: The Book of Superman Flyover Story - Breathing

I guess I just view that thematic weirdness as an accepted part of Heroscape. In a 4-player game, each player can have their own Superman and that's just how the game works.

It feels odd to me that this representation of "Superman is present and on your side" would somehow be more restrictive than every other representation of that concept we've done so far.

Re: The Book of Superman Flyover Story - Breathing

Yeah, I tend to agree. When I get around to updating this some time today, I'm going to drop that part and make it just for your army.

Wasn't part of the original rules of base scape preventing two players on the same team having the alternate Raelins? Mirror match ups whatever, but like in the context of the army this feels like its representing Superman in that Story. Literally the name change to Story and then tooling it around that corner case thing feels antithetical to the name.

Re: The Book of Superman Flyover Story - Breathing

If that's what the classic rules are, then let's match it to that. I just view this as a representation of Superman the character essentially, so I want it to mirror how our other representations of Superman work. :2cents:

Re: The Book of Superman Flyover Story - Breathing

That's not the classic rule:
Using Multiple Master Sets and/or Expansion Sets
Combining two or more Master Sets, or collecting expansion sets, gives you lots of new options. You can create a super-sized battlefield and play with any number of players. You can even boost the point values of your Armies, to match the bigger battlefield. But along with that extra excitement comes a few special rules...

Unique Army Cards: If you're combining two sets of Army Cards, make sure that no player has more than one of the same Unique Army Card in their Army. (For example, your army can't include two Shioris.) However, you and an opponent can both have the same Unique Army Card(s). For example, you can each have one Shiori in your Armies.

Re: The Book of Superman Flyover Story - Breathing

As far as I know, there's nothing about teammates not being able to use the alternate Raelins in classic? Or the same Raelin for that matter.

Like there's a rule about a specific player not being able to have both Raelin cards. But any restrictions between different armies is down to the rules for that specific draft and game.

Re: The Book of Superman Flyover Story - Breathing

I am unshockingly wrong on that account. Not surprised, would have double checked myself before bringing it up if I had more time.

IMO, its about Superman's role in a Batman story. I think it captures that. A big team up game where the joint team has Superman stuff makes it seem like it is no longer a Batman story, and thus this card is out of place. Its Story card about Batman, not a Superman design. If we aren't leaning into the concept of Story with the name change and we literally only changed it for some ambiguous potential confusion, then I'll back off and move to another lane there, but that restriction does feel in line with the idea of Story cards and what this seems to be aiming at, but if I'm just a lone voice, okay.

Re: The Book of Superman Flyover Story - Breathing

Updated to a maximum of 8 on the initiative, 2 unblockables, and removed the team mission. I think most of the time people will theme nerd that restriction in themselves in team play, and if they don't, then it's probably because it doesn't bother them (much like drafting two different Batman figures in a team game).

To me, every game of Superheroscape is telling a story, whether it uses a Story Card or not.

Re: The Book of Superman Flyover Story - Design

Not sure how to run the calculator for this and the checklists don't really apply here, so I'm just going to propose we move this to initial playtesting.

Going to try to get in a couple of public playtests before doing the initial, though. Hopefully starting tonight.

Re: The Book of Superman Flyover Story - VOTE for Initial Te

Cool. Stan Lee for Batman. I dig it. Definitely like cutting the restriction on friendly figures, and the unblockables seem to be a good direction

Yea

Re: The Book of Superman Flyover Story - VOTE for Initial Te

Yeah, I was looking at Avengers Thor again during the draft and saw that he does 2 unblockables, so it seemed right to be the same here.

Re: The Book of Superman Flyover Story - VOTE for Initial Te

No calculator, no checklists. Sign me up. :)
Curious to see where the stories take us.

Heh, it's the wild west. We just don't have those calibrated for Story Cards at all.

This passes.
