Character Bio - Mild mannered Clark Kent is raised in Smallville where he struggles to hide his alien powers. This leads to a lot of seclusion for the timid youth & without any opportunity to discover his real potential that is until Cosmic Boy, Saturn Girl, and Lightning Lad come to their past, and recruit Superboy to the Legion of Super-Heroes in the thirtieth-century.

Superman's career in fact is the inspiration for the formation of the Legion and in a paradox way they help Superboy fulfill this future. Throughout his teenage years, Superboy travels to the future under his own power to join the Legion in fighting threats to Earth and the United Planets, to which Earth belongs. Superboy becomes a core member of the Legion during two extended, full membership stints in the Legion, including two terms as Deputy Leader. Through the Legion, Superboy also regularly meets with his cousin Kara, Supergirl, but because of telepathic hypnotism employed by Saturn Girl, Superboy never remembers Kara, or any other information relating to his future career as Superman or the future of his family and friends, when he returns to his normal, 20th-century era.

Re: The Book of SUPERBOY - Design Phase

NAME = SUPERBOY
SECRET IDENTITY = KAL-EL

SPECIES = KRYPTONIAN
UNIQUENESS = UNIQUE HERO
CLASS = LEGIONNAIRE
PERSONALITY = INNOCENT

SIZE/HEIGHT = MEDIUM 5

LIFE = 6

MOVE = 7
RANGE = 1
ATTACK = 7
DEFENSE = 6

POINTS = 330

FOCUSED HEAT VISION
After moving and before attacking, you may choose a figure within 4 clear sight spaces. Roll the 20-sided die. If you roll 15 or higher, either:
• inflict 1 wound on the chosen figure; or
• destroy 1 glyph on the chosen figure's card; or
• inflict 3 wounds on the chosen figure if it is a destructible object.

PULLED PUNCHES
When attacking, subtract 1 skull from whatever is rolled unless a friendly figure within 4 clear sight spaces of Superboy has two or more Wound Markers on its card.

KRYPTONIAN DEFENSE
When rolling defense against a normal attack from a figure that is not a Kryptonian, if at least one shield is rolled, all blanks rolled count as extra shields.

SUPER STRENGTH

FLYING

Re: The Book of SUPERBOY - Design Phase

Pulled Punches is kinda a yawner. You could just reduce his attack to 5 and get the same effect. :shrug:

Re: The Book of SUPERBOY - Design Phase

I was thinking the same thing. I'd rather see him a 2 power design and let the stats do the talking.

It's kind of a given, but it looks like Flying and SS are missing.

Re: The Book of SUPERBOY - Design Phase

I don't mind Pulled Punches because if you just reduce his base attack then he can't really let loose on a DO or Android. So I'm fine with it on there as it adds some subtle theme and is simple.

FOCUSED HEAT VISION
After moving and before attacking, choose a figure within 4 clear sight spaces. Roll the 20-sided die. If you roll 12 or higher, the chosen figure recieves a wound and you may destroy one glyph on the chosen figure's card, or if the chosen figure is a destructible object, you may inflict 2 more wounds.

If the figure receives a wound, they wouldn't have a glyph any longer on their card, unless they were a design that could carry several of them. Either way I'm kind of leary of destroying Glyphs. Destroying a Cosmic Cube or Cosmic Control Rod shouldn't be that easy and would really take away from the value of the design it was included with like Red Skull or Annihilus. Heck, without the Cosmic Control Rod, Annihilus takes a wound at the end of each round and if it's destroyed, he can't even fight to get it back.

Re: The Book of SUPERBOY - Design Phase

Yeah, I have the same reservations about so easily destroying a glyph and the same like for Pulled Punches being on the card that Hahma does here.
The only other thing I'd mention is that I'm not sure if "Timid" is the perfect fit here ... something with a similar shade of meaning, sure, but I don't think that's quite it yet. Innocent? Reluctant? Passive? Reserved? Stoic?

Re: The Book of SUPERBOY - Design Phase

A3n and I real quickly brainstormed this design this morning in about 10 minutes... :lol:

On the pulled punches, an attack of 5 is not the same as an attack of 7 - a skull. With the latter, there is more potential, but I agree that this isn't the most interesting direction, just the best A3n and I could come up with this morning.

Maybe some direct Legionaire synergy, heroic power, or this power that I came up with, though A3n likes it, he didn't want to use on this design:

SUPER VISION
Before moving, if Superboy is not engaged, you may look at the power side of any one Glyph that is Symbol Side up. When Superboy attacks, you may add 3 to his Range and subtract 3 from his Attack.

It is a mix of X-Ray Vision and Heat Vision Light.

Anyways, this is the best I can offer this design right now. This is a tough one, and keeping Kryptonians "fresh" is a challenge in and of itself.

Re: The Book of SUPERBOY - Design Phase

I liked "Pulled Punches" honestly ... :reapershrug: Maybe a better theme there would be that he subtracts skulls unless there's a nearby Legionnaire who's wounded (so he kind of echoes Thing with Adventurers/Scientists in that he goes ape when you hurt his friends, but in this case he's not using his full strength until he faces such a situation).
Also, please update the title here to Superboy (Kal-El) when you have a chance, A3n. (Not all caps, with secret identity to differentiate it).

My first take I had him as INNOCENT.

I was thinking that Pulled Punches not work when near a Legionnaire would be a good synnergistic (yes I'm making up words) change myself but I couldn't thematically justify it, but the idea of being near a wounded Legionnaire is great. I like it. :up:

Re: The Book of SUPERBOY - Design Phase

So would this wording work?

PULLED PUNCHES
When attacking, subtract 1 skull from whatever is rolled unless Superboy is within 4 clear sight spaces of a Legionnaire you control that has one or more Wound Markers on it's card.

Re: The Book of SUPERBOY - Design Phase

Looks good to my mortal eyes. :)

Lose the apostrophe and it works.

Re: The Book of Superboy (Kal-El) - Design Phase

Wouldn't there be more sense in adding an auto skull if there is a wounded Legionnaire?

Re: The Book of Superboy (Kal-El) - Design Phase

Not thematically. Thematically, Superboy's a kid with immense power who restrains himself because he doesn't want to hurt others ... unless you threaten his family.

Re: The Book of Superboy (Kal-El) - Design Phase

Much better version of the power. Thanks for listening to the concerns presented.

Thanx Tcglkn.

Ok to alleviate the concerns about destroying glyphs too easily what about these changes:
FOCUSED HEAT VISION
After moving and before attacking, choose a non-adjacent figure within 4 clear sight spaces. Roll the 20-sided die. If you roll 12 or higher, the chosen figure recieves 1 wound or if the chosen figure is a destructible object, you may inflict 3 wounds. If you rolled 17 or higher you may also destroy one glyph on the chosen figure's card.

Re: The Book of Superboy (Kal-El) - Design Phase

That's more palatable for sure.

Re: The Book of Superboy (Kal-El) - Design Phase

Yeah, at least it gives the Glyph carrier a fighting chance. But then again, a 70 point figure can just steal a glyph and play keep away, so that's kind of like destroying it too. Though Superboy is a bit stouter than Shadow Thief. :D

1 - Heat Vision should be able to be used close range, it already is on Supergirl and Superman.
2 - "receives" spelling correction
3 - maintaining consistency with the two "wounding" lines.

Consistency and grammar (over-rated, I know) :wink:

Re: The Book of Superboy (Kal-El) - Design Phase

SP updated.

So if nobody has any other issues I would say he is ready for initial playtesting & sending to the ERB.
