The Book of Starfire

Re: The Book of Starfire - Design

NAME OF THE TEST UNIT (STARFIRE)

- THEME TEST/ Check to see if there are any powers or stats on the test unit card that does not accurately reflect the theme or likeness of what the character would and could do. Also consider destructible objects, and whether or not this characters powers should affect them.
PASS

- MIRROR TEST/ Check to see if the unit were played against itself, if there would be any loops that would upset the balance of the Game.
PASS

- BONDING TEST/ Compare the unit card with all possible currently existing Bonding abilities to make sure there are no continual Bonding possibilities that do not stop appropriately or do not stop at all. This is to prevent loops in Bonding.
PASS

- SYNERGIES TEST/ Compare the unit card with all possible currently existing synergies to make sure there are no factors that could break the game by making any unit to powerful or too weak.
PASS

- POWER CHECK/ Consider the test unit and all existing units and all glyphs to compare to and check for any powers that could be over amplified and break the game. Each power must define when it takes place, who or what it affects, and What are the stipulations on the power if there are any.
PASS

- FUN TEST/ Consider whether or not the design was fun to play.
PASS

- FUN COMPETITIVE TEST/ Consider whether or not the design was fun to play against.
PASS

- DRAFTING TEST/ Consider whether or not this design is worth drafting.
PASS

- USAGE TEST/ Consider whether or not all of the powers on this card were used or at least usable.
PASS

- STRATEGY TEST/ Consider whether or not the design offers any real strategy or interesting tactics to the overall game.

Heavy Hitter or Mid-Level Hero Test
- Does it pass, Yes or No? Yes

- What should be the unit's point value? 210-220.
- Give a brief overview. She feels more like 200 before Protective Fury comes into play, but with it I like her at 220 so far.
Spoiler Alert!

Squad Test
- Does it pass, Yes or No? Yes

- What should be the unit's point value? 230-240
- Give a brief overview. The stars aligned for Protective Fury and Starfire was able to use Slipstreaming to keep her attack bonus in tow as she pummeled agents.
Map: Custom
Units: Starfire (220), Kid Flash (110) (330) vs. SHIELD Agents x3 (330)
Spoiler Alert!

Squad Test
- Does it pass, Yes or No? Yes

- What should be the unit's point value? Much less than 220.
- Give a brief overview. This match up just turned on the Hawkmen knowing how to play Starfire and Speedy. They lacked a good screen to keep the Hawkmen away, which meant Speedy ended up engaged and unable to ever use Speed Shot, and the Hawkmen targeted Starfire first, preventing her from taking advantage of Protective Fury.
Map: Custom
Units: Starfire (220), Speedy (90) (310) vs. Hawkmen of Thanagar x3 (300)
Spoiler Alert!

Army Test
- Does it pass, Yes or No? Yes

- What should be the unit's point value? 200-220
- Give a brief overview. Not a good match up for the Titans here. Starfire took two wounds from Evasive Strike, but almost took out Batman. Batman prevailed, though, and with her gone, the Titans lacked a heavy to use against Supes.
Map: Custom
Units: Starfire (220), Beast Boy (60), Beast Boy (Pteradactyl) (40), Beast Boy (Grizzly Bear) (20), Beast Boy (Cheetah) (20), Wonder Girl (140), Robin (Dick) (100) (600) vs. Batman (200), Superman (400) (600)
Spoiler Alert!

Army Test
- Does it pass, Yes or No? Yes

- What should be the unit's point value? Under 200?
- Give a brief overview. Just a bad day at the office. After two of them, though, I’m wanting to send her out at a discount from the heavy hitters – probably 210.
Map: Custom
Units: Starfire (220), Cyborg (200), Aqualad (60), Superboy (240), Krypto (80), Kid Flash (110), Speedy (Roy) (90) (1,000) vs. Gorilla City Warriors x3 (375), Gorilla Grodd (225), Solovar (260), Riddler (140) (1,000)
Spoiler Alert!

Re: The Book of Starfire - Design

This one's coming along slow and steady. All the heavy hitters are done thus far. I think I want to cap her Protective Fury like we've got Fists of Fury capped. Probably at 4 attacks total.

Re: The Book of Starfire - Design

She's all wrapped up. I like her at 210 for public playtesting, with some wiggle room based on their results. I don't really feel I got all the Titans have to offer from their army tests, but sometimes it goes that way. 24 hours on the clock!

Re: The Book of Starfire - Design

Pre-Yea for testing.

She looks a bit closer to 200 than 210, but if you feel 210 is safer, that's cool too.

Re: The Book of Starfire - Design

Yeah, I feel like the Titans just weren't getting good rolls or good breaks in the army tests. So I really feel 210 potential is there and I want to see if other players with other maps and other match ups prove it. I think 200-220 feels like a solid range for her, though, so this will position her well for the additional tests to really help us lock into one cost in that range.

Re: The Book of Starfire - Design

LPSirG or proposal and time. :)

Re: The Book of Starfire - Design

I propose we move Starfire to Playtesting at 210 points!

Re: The Book of Starfire - VOTE for Playtesting

Sweet. This passes to Playtesting. :)

Re: The Book of Starfire - Playtesting

Thanks, T! :)

I've gotta get you to use the red (some red added here by me) and the spoiler tags, though, because it makes your tests so much easier to read!

Iambatman,

Here are the tests. I think 200 might be better for her than 210. She didn't perform well in some of my games and neither did Robin or Superboy. One game though she took out pretty much all the Hawkmen and Hawkgirl with Superboy only helping a little with the heroes. She killed around 400 points that game, but in other games she didn't do any thing or just around 100 points. One game though she earned about 200 so I think that is a good average that leaves a bit a wiggle room for other future Titan synergy with Cyborg and Dick grayson. Her Reckless Engagment power for me was more of a disadvantage then an advantage because it caused her to be easier to wound, but it is great for theme.

Spoiler Alert!

Re: The Book of Starfire - Playtesting

Not surprised Superman romped on them, since only Superboy (Kryptonian) is able to get around Man of Steel at all. And they also didn't have the turn bonding to take on a whole slew of SHIELD Agents, so also not surprised there. Even still, though, that's enough losses with limited Titan/Sidekick help to make me think 210 is closer to a ceiling than a floor.

Re: The Book of Starfire - Playtesting

Awesome! Yeah, I figured Superboy would make a good partner for her. I'm glad to see you managed to exploit this combo. :) 210 is definitely looking good so far.

Robin (Dick Grayson) and Wonder Girl (Donna Troy) make good combos with her as well, I've found. :) So should Raven when I get around to her.

Thanks!

Army Test 1
- Does it pass, Yes or No? Yes
- What should be the unit's point value? 210
- Give a brief overview. A few inopportune defense rolls from Army 2 made this a quick battle and an easy victory for the Titans.

Map: Ivy's Greenhouse
Armies: Army 1: Starfire, Superboy (Kon-El), Robin, Spoiler (620) VS Army 2: Steel, Giant-Man, Jean Grey (620)
Damage: 1 wound to Steel, 4 wounds to Giant-Man.
Protective Fury: 4 extra attacks.

Spoiler Alert!

Army Test 2
- Does it pass, Yes or No? Yes
- What should be the unit's point value? 210-220
- Give a brief overview. Things were much closer in the Rematch. Starfire did very well, but, with less whiffs, Army 2 fared much better. A few decent rolls from Jean could have easily won them this game. Superboy took 4 wounds early and then held off his attackers while staying out in front, tying up his opponents and allowing Starfire to go crazy with her attacks.

Map: Ivy's Greenhouse
Armies: Army 1: Starfire, Superboy (Kon-El), Robin, Spoiler (620) VS Army 2: Steel, Giant-Man, Jean Grey (620)
Damage: 4 wounds to Steel, 4 wounds to Giant-Man.
Protective Fury: 13 extra attacks.

Spoiler Alert!

Army Test 3
- Does it pass, Yes or No? Yes
- What should be the unit's point value? 210
- Give a brief overview. Superboy didn't last as long this time, but he gave Starfire the chance to do some damage before he went. Once the Titans were down, Superman flew in and hit hard, but he wasn't quite able to pull out a victory.

Map: Moon Base Alpha
Armies: Army 1: Starfire, Superboy (Kon-El), Superman (II) (900) VS Army 2: Luke Cage, Iron Fist, Shang-Chi, Iron Man Mark III (900)
Damage: 5 wounds to Shang-Chi, 1 to Luke Cage.
Protective Fury: 5 extra attacks.

Spoiler Alert!

My only exposure to Starfire comes from the Teen Titans cartoon from a few years back (actually, probably more than a few), so I can't say how thematic she is, but she's certainly fun to play. She and Superboy make a great duo; if you can set it up right, he can take wounds for her and then she can go nuts, dealing out a ton of damage if everything goes well. Once Superboy goes down though, so does her usefulness, with only one attack of 4 or 5 and no defensive powers. It's possible that once a few more Titans are released, she'll be able to hang back and keep up her attacks using different Titans, but it will also be tricky to get together. And once Superboy is down, she doesn't last long if the focus turns to her. Still, I'd err on the side of caution with her points.
210 felt pretty right to me, she often destroyed more than her points worth, but it required a lot of sacrifice from Superboy. All-in-all, she's a nice unit, fun to play, adds some interesting strategies and should be a great part of any Teen Titan armies.

Re: The Book of Starfire - Playtesting

Agreed - and this cements it for me! :)

Sweet! :) Thanks for the tests, FG.

Just as a note, though, Batman only has 4 lives. ;-)

Cheers,

Definitely enjoyed it, thanks. Reminded me of the old Teen Titans cartoon I used to watch when I was younger.

Re: The Book of Starfire - VOTE for Final Editing

Yea - Anybody else think Flame Gryphon is not putting enough notes in his playtests?

Yeah, they can be better with a little more specifics. Sometimes I think he gets in the Hidical mode and puts quantity of tests before quality.

Also as a general note, the Batman/Superman opponent army is getting old and overused, as is the FF4 starting to be. They are easy and lazy army builds. We have a lot more units out there and these see the table more than I like to see personally. It's one thing if there is a specific reason to test the FF4 such as against a unit that can steal or move OM's or other specific reasons, but the FF4 can be a build that is either hot or cold depending on Mr. F's rolls. I know it balances out in the long run, but if it swings too much one way or the other in a test, it's not awfully helpful.

yea to editing
