Character Bio:
The archmage Sonlen is one of Ullar’s oldest and most trusted servants. The myriad magics of his homeland, Feylund, are his to command; and the healing powers of his dragon companion, Velsa, grow stronger as Valhalla’s war-torn years pass them by. The inhabitants of Ullar’s lushly forested domain speak freely of Sonlen’s wisdom, dedication, and tenacity. He is a man who makes friends easily and has few detractors.

Sonlen’s heart bleeds for Valhalla. He cannot help but love its sweeping landscapes, brave inhabitants, and unknowable secrets. This love protects him from the bitterness of his exile. Since the poisoning Ullar has become paranoid, mistrusting and lashing out at even his oldest friends. Yet even as he departs, banished to rot in solitude, Sonlen’s love for Ullar endures.

It is quite fortunate that the archmage has made so many friends during his travels. Without the strength of Ullar’s army to support him, Sonlen would be terribly vulnerable. Even the pirates coalesced to avoid weathering the war alone. Good then that clever Shiori remembers him fondly from their travels in the Marro Swamp, and puts her skill at espionage to use on his plan. Other pieces fall into place along the way, as the elf’s many allies are brought into the fold.

There is too much to love in war-torn Valhalla to let it fall. If the Valkyrie cannot save themselves, then mortals must rise to the challenge.

Very nice indeed! But hey; change the First Paragraph Last Sentence of his description from "He is a man..." to "He is an elf....":stir:

Intial thoughts:
Why the heck isn't the hit zone silhouette a side viee?
Sonlen growing confident means Otonoshi can't benefit like his prior Tricky version.
He's still an Archmage, so the 8/9 don't significantly benefit from having him around.
Unlike all Hasbroscape healing abilities, Sonlen does not specify Hero, so he can heal wounded bears/necrotechs/dreadnauts.
But unless I'm reading that incorrectly, only one per turn.
Double attack at melee with the Dragon's bite being stronger is cute.
This is a much better mounted character design than AoA Raelin, but isn't going to set the competitive scene on fire.

Like his design very much indeed! I kinda miss that he could heal himself, but it makes sense since the dragon now seems to be the one represented by the HP and stats. But it makes me wonder why he only has 3 defense, it seems pretty low for a 170 point figure, a dragon at that.
But a ranged flyer that can heal adjacent figures should be pretty devastating, especially if you can set up a double attack, first in melee and then ranged. Cc

Is there ever a time you wouldn't get the extra attack die from Dragon Assault? Thematically, the dragon is swooping in and attacking as it lands, but mechanically I can choose to fly 0 spaces and still trigger the "used his Flying Special Power this turn". Almost like he's pouncing on his target.

If you read the flying power description, it says that you will take leaving engagement attacks as you start to fly (even 0 spaces). Thematically, the dragon is flying straight up, possibly taking a hit, and then diving back down. Once engaged, it is not really sustainable to go for the extra die.

Of all the new figures that I've had time with, Sonlen is number 1 in "how the heck do I use him in 400-600 point games?"

He wants to go out and cause damage. Too early and he gets shot up. Too late and he probably loses a lot of healing potential. Midgame means that youre choosing between him or another part of your army that could be more effective.

He cant be an opener or your army will be stuck behind and he isnt great for cleanup because hes way too expensive. You're basically playing down 170 points if hes sitting in the deployment zone.

He does great with Rats, but who doesn't? In an all AoA format, he's really decent because of the limited bonding options.

Any effective lists and strategies out there?

I've been using SotM Sonlen alongside Frostclaw Paladins and Knight Irene in a not-quite 400pt army. It's a lot of fun and has been consistently strong in my 400pt league. Basically send in the bears early to tie up your opponents, and use Sonlen as ranged support. The biggest thing with AoA Sonlen, honestly, is that those stats on flying is scary. 6 move, 6 range, 4 attack? I think he's genuinely going to play like a dragon, albeit one of the more fragile dragons. Most of the time you'll be using him as ranged support, but when your units get hit, he can fly in, heal, and do some scary damage with Dragon Assault.

(I know technically SotM Sonlen can't heal the Frostclaws, but my house rules says all classic healing effects work on any wounded figure. Classic 'Scape didn't have to say Figure instead of Hero because all multi-life figures were heroes.)

I will at some point test Sonlen2 with a Hydra and some cheap squads that can take point at getting in the way. Rats of course work, though also perhaps things like Dividers or Warriors of Ashra since they are now cheaper than Rats.

Sonlen healing bears and Knight Primus has a lot of potential at high point value games, but requires like at least 600 points so you can still get enough figures on the board after dropping 440 on those three things.

Touched up the formatting here and added the Basic card. Ironically, the original Sonlen book doesn't have it either.

I hope this guy is good! I am... apprehensive at best. Sonlen was perhaps my favorite character from Classic.

Sonlen can't use Healing Wing 13 if he used flying to move? It says "After moving normally with Sonlen..." Flying isn't normal movement, right?

Seems weird that a power with Wing in the name can't be used when he uses his wings.

He can use it if he used flying. Flying modifies the movement, but it still counts as moving normally. The language is used on this card to clarify that it will not trigger if he is moved by another figure's power (or, for example, if there is ever a treasure glyph that grants an "instead of moving normally" power to the glyph's holder).
