Character Bio - Hired by J. Jonah Jameson to be a human test subject, Mac Gargan gained the abilities of a super-human scorpion. His initial purpose was to dispose of Spider-Man, but he eventually turned on Jameson. The mutagenic treatment granted him super strength, agility, and durability, but at the cost of driving Mac insane.

-Rulings and Clarifications-
  • Q: How do I climb with Scorpion?
  • A:
    Level - heights of elevation on the battlefield

    Space - horizontal locations on the battlefield that figures can occupy

    When you would move with a flying figure, you count each space as you go while ignoring elevations. When Scorpion climbs, you count each space as you go basically ignoring up to 2 levels. So Scorpion moves just one space from level 0 to a level 2 hill and only used 1 movement. He could also move one space from level 0 to a level 4 hill and only use 2 movement.

NAME = SCORPION
SECRET IDENTITY = MAC GARGAN

SPECIES = MUTATE
UNIQUENESS = UNIQUE HERO
CLASS = CRIMINAL
PERSONALITY = INSANE

SIZE/HEIGHT = MEDIUM 5

LIFE = 5

MOVE = 7
RANGE = 1
ATTACK = 5
DEFENSE = 6

POINTS = 200

EXPERT CLIMBING
When moving up levels of height to move onto a space with Scorpion, do not count spaces for the first two levels and only count one space for each two levels after the first two. You may ignore Scorpion's height of 5 when climbing. Scorpion never takes falling damage or major falling damage.

TAIL WHIP
When Scorpion attacks with his normal attack, you may choose one figure that is adjacent to both Scorpion and the defending figure. If the defending figure receives one or more wounds from Scorpion's normal attack, the chosen figure receives a wound.

ACID TAIL BLAST SPECIAL ATTACK
Range 4. Attack 3.
If Scorpion inflicts one or more wounds with this special attack, roll the 20-sided die for Acid Damage. If you roll 13 or higher, add 1 additional Wound Marker to the defending figure's card and roll again for Acid Damage. Continue rolling for Acid Damage until the figure is destroyed or you do not roll 13 or higher.

SUPER STRENGTH

Re: Scorpion - Design Phase

Not really a fan of Tail Crush, not only do you have to inflict 3 wounds with an attack of 4, you have to roll a 17 or higher to finish them off.

I'd prefer something like this:
TAIL WHIP
When attacking with Scorpion's normal attack, you may choose one other figure adjacent to the defending figure to be affected by this attack. Roll attack dice once for both affected figures. Each figure rolls defense dice separately.

Re: Scorpion - Design Phase

Criminal makes sense, stats look pretty good. I could probably see Move 6 and Attack 5 though. Not sure if Super Strength should be added. Is he really Insane? I always thought he was kind of a mixture of dumb/sensitive.

Scorpion shoots acid from his tail. That absolutely should be represented in a special attack or ability.

Tail Spring is basically Stealth Leap. I'd rather we stuck with that for the power title if it's identical.

That's a typo, it's supposed to be "2 or more wounds", but I think I like yours better. I'll save the Crush for one or more of the Serpent Scoiety.

Re: Scorpion - Design Phase

We have had so many criminals though, I really like Psychopath better here. Also, it seems to me that this design is missing quite a bit of Pizazz in terms of his powers.

Good Pig pointed out that he shoots acid from his tail, I definitely feel like that idea would make for a fun power and add some pizazz.

Re: Scorpion - Design Phase

From Marvel Comic Database:

As the Scorpion, MacDonald Gargan possesses all the powers of a scorpion. When he acquires the Venom symbiote, he still retains his scorpion-like powers and is granted the additional powers of the Venom symbiote, granting him several abilities similar to Spider-Man. Due to the removal of the symbiote, Gargan now has been reduced to his original Scorpion power. Scorpion:
  • Superhuman Strength: MacDonald Gargan possesses extreme superhuman strength in both his Scorpion and Venom complexes. So with that said, MacDonald, with his strength as the Scorpion, is able to lift approximately 15 tons, and as such, he can easily overpower humans, and can lift extremely heavy objects, uproot trees and use them as weapons. On several occasions, he has proven capable of even overpowering Spiderman himself.
  • Superhuman Speed: Gargan can run and or exercise as well as operate at superhuman speeds hence his overall body equilibrium is also heightened although he isn't nearly as fast as speedsters. With his speed, he can outrun vehicles.
  • Superhuman Stamina: Gargan's musculature generates considerably less fatigue toxins during physical activity than the musculature of an ordinary human. Originally, he could exert himself at peak capacity for several hours before fatigue began to impair him.
  • Superhuman Durability: As Scorpion Gargan had superhuman durability. The scorpion suit was capable of shiedling Gargan from bullets from small-arms weapons firing conventional ammunition. Gargan was also able to survive heavy impacts and blunt force trauma without sustaining injury .
  • Superhuman Agility: With or without the symbiote, Gargan's agility, balance, and bodily coordination are enhanced to levels that are beyond the natural physical limits of even the finest human athlete .
  • Superhuman Reflexes: Gargan's reflexes are similarly enhanced and are superior to those of the finest human athlete.
  • Wall Crawling: Though he typically punches holes in walls to use as hand-and-footholds, Gargan is capable of adhering to solid surfaces much like Spider-Man.
  • Scorpion Sense: After Alistaire Smythe provides Gargan with a new Scorpion Suit, he also explains it is designed to tap into his new Scorpion Sense, which allows him to sense danger similar to Spider-Man.
  • Electro-Mechanical Tail: The Scorpion's battle suit was originally equipped with a superhumanly powerful tail that he could whip at speeds up to over 90 miles per hour. The tail varied in length with each design - from an original 4' version, up to 20' in other implementations. His most recent tail before gaining the Venom symbiote was approximately 10' in length. His tail was powered by a self-contained power pack mounted on the back of his battle suit. The tail was connected via a cybernetic link to the fine muscles of his spinal column when he dons his suit, enabling him to direct the tail by involuntary nerve impulses and activated by his mental commands. Internally, the tail consisted of a series of separated circular plates connected by a matrix of steel cables. Solenoids contract the cables and manipulate the tail, allowing it to whip at speeds of over 150 feet per second. The tail was also armored, and was tipped with a spike, making it deadly in combat. He had mastered the use of his tail to the point that he could use it as both a bludgeon, projectile launcher, or as a fifth limb (he had also upgraded its flexibility several times, making it much more efficient in combat). By coiling his tail behind him and using it as a spring, the Scorpion could propel himself over 30 feet into the air. Over the years, he had modified and enhanced it countless times, acquiring upgrades from the likes of Justin Hammer and the Tinkerer, who equipped it with a poisonous barb with venom installed or a form of hypnogen, electrical blasts (he could also channel electricity through it to shock anyone who tried to grab him by the tail or short-circuit electrical equipment), laser blasts, acid blasts, and mace gas.
  • Pincers: The Scorpion's gloves on his costume granted him miniature pincers on each hand that enabled him to literally rip through Spider-man's webbing.
Scorpion Armored Suit: As the Scorpion, Mac Gargan wore a full-body battle suit, which had undergone several major revisions in his long criminal career. These were always courtesy of third party suppliers - since Gargan himself possesses no aptitude for engineering. Dr. Farley Stillwell created his original suit, with funding provided by J. Jonah Jameson. Later versions were provided by Justin Hammer, and other large corporations and governments seeking to maximize the lethality of their hired assassin. The most recent design consisted of an inner woven Kevlar layer, covered with a thick layer of insulation/padding, and topped with a high-tech composite armor plating, making him impervious to small firearms.
Well there's plenty to grab from here folks.

He should definitely have Super Strength.

He could have a Special Attack with a range of 4 maybe for either an Electro blast or Acid blast from his tail. Can just be a Tail Blast Special attack.

His normal move can be up to 7 IMO, he's really fast.

Tail Spring could maybe go up to 12 levels and it could be differentiated from Stealth Leap by having a line at the end saying that he can't use Tail Whip after using Tail Spring.

I like Tickles Tail Whip power.
Maybe if Scorpian had a normal attack of 5, he can have the option of attacking 2 figures but with 1 less die.

TAIL WHIP

When attacking with Scorpions normal attack, you may roll 1 fewer attack die and choose one other figure adjacent to the defending figure to be affected by this attack. Roll attack dice once for both affected figures. Each figure rolls defense dice separately.

I could see him being either a Psychopath or Assassin as he was used as one, but Psychopath would likely be better for him.

Re: Scorpion - Design Phase

I'd like to keep him a Criminal and dream of having a synergistic Sinister Twelve all in the same army.
But I definitely agree that an acid spray from his tail is a must have.

Re: Scorpion - Design Phase

Ruined that dream with Kraven. ;)

I know. Trying to pick up the pieces as best I can. Kraven was unavoidable, though. It'd be like not making Kang a Conqueror.

Assassin would work for me because he'd at least be connected to Kingpin, but I'm not sure that faction really needs anything else either! :)

Re: Scorpion - Design Phase

Too much is too much though, and I think we need to start creating "criminal types" as something other than the boring Criminal. Sinister Six don't work all that well together anyways. Just being in the same army and having some synergy is fine by me. They don't need to operate like the X-Men or Wrecking Crew you know.

Re: Scorpion - Design Phase

Straight forward design for another figure I know nothing about. :up:

Re: Scorpion - Design Phase

After the breathing period:

NAME = SCORPION
SECRET IDENTITY = MAC GARGAN
SPECIES = MUTATE
UNIQUENESS = UNIQUE HERO
CLASS = PSYCOPATH
PERSONALITY = INSANE
SIZE/HEIGHT = MEDIUM 5

LIFE = 5
MOVE = 7
RANGE = 1
ATTACK = 5
DEFENSE = 6
POINTS = 190

TAIL WHIP
When attacking with Scorpion's normal attack, you may roll 1 fewer attack die and choose one other figure adjacent to the defending figure to be affected by this attack. Roll attack dice once for both affected figures. Each figure rolls defense dice separately.

ACID TAIL BLAST SPECIAL ATTACK
Range 4. Attack 3.
If Scorpion inflicts one or more wounds with this special attack, roll the 20-sided die. If you roll 15 or higher, the defending figure receives one additional wound.

TAIL SPRING
Instead of his normal move, Scorpion may use his Tail Spring. Tail Spring has a move of 3. When counting spaces for Scorpion's Tail Spring movement, ignore elevations. Scorpion may spring over water without stopping, spring over figures without becoming engaged, and spring over obstacles such as ruins. Scorpion may not spring more than 12 levels up or down in a single Tail Spring. When Scorpion moves with Tail Spring, he will not take any leaving engagement attacks.

SUPER STRENGTH

Re: Scorpion - Design Phase

Nice!

Thinking about the acid blast, it would be cool if you could keep rolling the d20 (like Sujoah) to see if the acid keeps eating through whatever it hit.

Re: Scorpion - Design Phase

I like that idea, GP. :)

And I like the projected updates (I'm even, begrudgingly, OK with Psychopath).

Re: Scorpion - Design Phase

I like Criminal better too. Poll time?

If Scorpion is a Criminal he certainly won't be the last one. I don't think there's any good reason to keep him out of the faction for power level or anything. It says all over Marvel wiki how he's a professional criminal too.

Re: Scorpion - Design Phase

That makes me #3 (just to verify - I'm still pro-Criminal).

Re: Scorpion - Design Phase

As more of a general comment, I'd rather we did justice to the character for each design than change their class/personality out of boredom with a common class/personality that works.

Re: Scorpion - Design Phase

Can we go with Expert Climbing like on Dock Ock, instead of Tail Spring? I have seen this guy climb after Spider-Man much more often than I have seen him "spring" after him. Also, reusing an appropriate power is a good thing, especially on two figures that will likely be in the same army quite often.

Re: Scorpion - Design Phase

Tail Spring does feel too much like Stealth Leap ... I'd be in favor of Expert Climbing here as well.

Edit: I agree with GP that just going with Stealth Leap would be fine as well.

Re: Scorpion - Design Phase

Either one is better, but my point remains, that this guy is notorious for climbing after Spidey on the buildings, where jumping is something he can do, it isn't really something that defines the character all that well.
