Character Bio - The Jackel, an insane ex-professor, with the help of Norman Osborn, experimented with cloning. Angry at Spider-Man for the death of Gwen Stacy, he cloned the wall-crawler, to create an army to oppose him. Ben Reilly was the most successful of the clones. Taking the identity of Scarlet Spider, Ben became a Crime Fighter like his "brother" Peter Parker, but because they both shared the same memories (a side effect of the cloning), it was put to question who was the "real" Peter Parker, and who was the clone. Eventually deciding that Ben was the original, Peter went into retirement with his wife, Mary Jane, and Ben took over the role of Spider-Man. During a face off with Green Goblin in which Peter joined the battle, Ben sacrificed himself to save Peter from a lethal blade in the Goblin's glider. His body decomposed rapidly, which revealed in the end that Peter was the original, and that Ben Reilly was in fact, the clone.

-Rulings and Clarifications-
  • Q: Can a figure with a Webbing Marker be moved by special powers such as Martian Manhunter's Telepathic Directive?
  • A: The webbed figure cannot move on his own, but could be moved by other powers that don't require that figure to move on it's own. So Telepathic Directive would not work, since you have to move him, but if you used Spider-Man's Web Slinger, it WOULD work, since the opponent is just placing that figure adjacent to him.

Card Updates:
21 November 2020 - Swing Line wording update

NAME = SCARLET SPIDER

SECRET IDENTITY = BEN REILLY

SPECIES = CLONE
UNIQUENESS = UNIQUE HERO
CLASS = CRIME FIGHTER
PERSONALITY = ENTHUSIASTIC

SIZE/HEIGHT = MEDIUM 5

LIFE = 5

MOVE = 6
RANGE = 1
ATTACK = 4
DEFENSE = 3

POINTS = 190

IMPACT WEBBING SPECIAL ATTACK
Range 4. Attack 4.
Start the game with 3 white Webbing Markers on this card. If Scarlet Spider inflicts one or more wounds on a Unique Hero with this special attack, you may place a Webbing Marker from this card on the defending figure’s Army Card. Before another figure with your Webbing Marker on its card moves, that player must roll the 20-sided die. If that player rolls 1-12, that figure may not move. If that player rolls 13 or higher, return all your Webbing Markers from that card to this card.

SPIDEY-SENSES 9
If Scarlet Spider is attacked and at least 1 skull is rolled, roll the 20-sided die. Subtract 4 from the roll if the attacking figure is a Symbiote. If you roll 9 or higher, Scarlet Spider takes no damage and may immediately use his Swing Line 4 special power.

SWING LINE 4
Instead of his normal move, Scarlet Spider may move up to 4 spaces with Swing Line. When moving with Swing Line, Scarlet Spider has the Flying special power, but may not move up or down more than 40 levels in a single swing, and will not take any leaving engagement attacks.

SUPER STRENGTH

My only issue is that Impact Webbing is REALLY LONG and REALLY COMPLEX. I'd like to trim that a good deal if possible.

I'd kind of like a new personality, too, but I'm not sure what to go with. Enthusiastic?

Yeah, I know it's long, but I really wanted a way to stop people in their tracks with webs (Not only is it thematic to just tie someone up, but it's a slight nerf for Bizarro and the like!!), and don't know a better way of doing it.

I know that he was a lot more upbeat, so maybe Enthusiastic. Spidey will have to chime in for that one if possible! :)

Is this any shorter?

IMPACT WEBBING SPECIAL ATTACK
Range 4. Attack 3.
Start the game with 3 black Webbing markers on this card. If Scarlet Spider inflicts at least one wound to an opponent's Unique Hero with Impact Webbing Special Attack, you may place one Webbing marker on that figure’s Army Card. Before moving a figure with a Webbing Marker on its card, that player must roll the 20-sided die. If you roll 13 or higher, place the Webbing Marker back on Scarlet Spider’s card. Add 4 to this roll if the figure with the Webbing Marker has Superstrength. Any figure with a Webbing marker on its Army Card may not move. Webbing markers do not affect Scarlet Spider.

Can the webbed figure be moved by other special powers? Just want to be sure of the intent.

Yep, they're just tied up on their own.

And Quozl, regardless if it's shorter or not, I like your wording much better. :up:

Nothing to add at this point. Direction looks good.

To trim - to begin with, I'd drop the Super Strength clause. I see where you're going with it but it's really just wasted space. Lower the roll a bit to compensate if you feel the need.

Maybe make it just a power instead of a special attack? Maybe that would save space... here's a crack at it...

IMPACT WEBBING
Start the game with 3 black Webbing Markers on this card. When attacking a non-adjacent figure, you may roll 1 fewer attack die and, if that figure is a Unique Hero, place a Webbing Marker on its Army Card. Any figure except for Scarlet Spider with a Webbing marker on it's Army Card may not move. Before moving a figure with a Webbing Marker on its card, that player must roll the 20-sided die. If you roll 13 or higher, place the Webbing Marker back on Scarlet Spider’s card.

That'd save two lines, at least... marginal but something. :shrug: I don't think there's any way to trim it further without dropping the markers and it seems I'm odd man out there.

Well, if I get rid of it as a special attack, then I'd have to give him range. Didn't want to do that to keep some differences between him and Peter, and also to show he's not as good with webs (Aside from Impact, of course).

Can A3n chime in to see if there's too much text?

I don't doubt it'll fit on a card, I'm just concerned about it being somewhat overwhelming to look at... Swing Line is a really long power that takes up a lot of mindspace, and on top of that you've got another long, involved special attack that involves markers that trigger every time your opponent tries to move? It just strikes me as really complex.

You still have to hit with the SA before it affects them. Plus the other two powers are reused and pretty straight forward. I'm not really seeing it as overly complex, I don't know. :shrug:

Yeah, could just be me - if no one else is echoing I have no problem with it otherwise.

Except for the Super Strength bit, that I'm pretty adamant about dropping. :p

That's not a big deal. Just figured Hulk would break it easier than JJ Jameson. ;) I'm not married to that theme thing, though.

I don't have an issue with the text for Impact Webbing Special Attack. The other powers are ones we are used to already, & after reading it once it is a fairly easy power to get the gist of.

My concern is that the way it is worded the player with Scarlet Spider is the one rolling the D20 which isn't right.

It says before moving a figure with the marker, that player must roll the 20 sided die. Doesn't that cover it?

quozl's wording was a pretty good shot at it as well.

I agree with Enthusiastic as the personality and kind of like the idea of the Impact Webbing as a special power instead of a special attack, but it's not a hill I'll die on or anything. :p

but then it says "If you roll..."

Do we have precedence for this? If they roll...?

I'm good with Enthusiastic!
Not a huge fan of Impact Webs as Special Attack for reasons I stated before, but I could roll with it if you guys like. :)

I just like the idea of him being able to use it all the time, I guess. :) But I can see the utility in keeping it to a special attack.

So do we want Impact Webbing to be:

A: A Special attack that triggers on wounds

Or

B: A Special power you could use normally on your turn

I still like A. That way he's not annoying everyone unchecked, plus it's Impact Webbing, which hits you and then explodes into gooeyness, you're not just being tied up. That to me seems like more of an attack. :)

I think I'm actually going A at this point. It's not a big deal complexity-wise and I like your point about being less adept at webbing.
