Character Bio - A beacon of hope to mutants the world over, Professor Charles Francis Xavier is among the most renowned public heroes on Earth. At an early age he discovered his vast mental powers of telepathy, and thus coupled with natural intellect led to his earning a scholarship to Oxford University, where his intelligence only grew further. As an adult, Charles met a young Erik Lehnsherr, a Holocaust survivor and, like Xavier, a mutant. The two became fast friends, but their political differences were too great, and the two soon parted ways. While Charles hoped that mutants and humans could live in peace, Erik felt mutants would be feared and hated like so many other “different” people in history. This schism would be the dawn of a lifelong struggle between Xavier and Erik – or as he would later be known, Magneto.
Over the years, Charles became a world renowned scholar, geneticist, and psychologist, despite becoming a paraplegic not long after his split with Erik. It was his fame that led to the foundation of Xavier’s School for Gifted Youngsters; recruiting young mutants, he began to train them to control their powers and use them for the good of mankind. Known as the X-Men, these youths – Cyclops, Jean Grey, Beast, Iceman, and Angel – first did battle against Magneto and his Brotherhood of Evil Mutants.
Since then, the X-Men have only grown, and with them, Charles’ mission. He is no longer simply a teacher, but an icon to mutants around the globe, who look to him as a symbol of what mutantkind can achieve.
