Character Bio - “Dick Grayson became Nightwing after he was dismissed from the role of Robin at eighteen [….]Throughout Dick's adolescence, Batman and Robin are inseparable. However, as Dick grows older and spends more time as the leader of the Teen Titans, he retires as Robin and takes on his own superhero identity Nightwing to assert his independence (others would fill in as Robin) [….] As Nightwing, Dick leads the Teen Titans and later the Outsiders [….] Grayson's Nightwing costume was a high-tech suit specially designed for his high-flying acrobatic style [….]Held in spring-loaded pouches in the back of his costume, Dick carried a pair of Eskrima truncheons made from an unbreakable polymer that were wielded as both offensive and defensive weapons.” (Wikipedia 2013).

NAME = NIGHTWING
SECRET IDENTITY = DICK GRAYSON

SPECIES = HUMAN
UNIQUENESS = UNIQUE HERO
CLASS = TITAN
PERSONALITY = DARING

SIZE/HEIGHT = MEDIUM 5

LIFE = 4

MOVE = 6
RANGE = 5
ATTACK = 4
DEFENSE = 3

POINTS = 200

TITANS GO!
After revealing an Order Marker on this card, before taking a turn with Nightwing, you may first reveal an "X" Order Marker on this card and take a turn with up to two other Unique Titan or Sidekick Heroes you control within 6 clear sight spaces of Nightwing. You may activate the chosen Heroes in any order.

ESCRIMA ASSAULT SPECIAL ATTACK
Range 1. Attack 3.
Choose up to two figures to attack. Roll 3 attack dice once for all affected figures. Each figure rolls defense dice separately. After attacking with this special attack, Nightwing may attack with this special attack one additional time.

ACROBATIC MASTERY
Nightwing never takes falling damage and is never attacked when leaving an engagement. After rolling attack dice for a normal attack or after rolling defense dice, for each shield rolled you may immediately move Nightwing one space up to 6 levels up or down. When Nightwing rolls defense dice against an opponent's attack, one shield will block all damage.

Re: The Book of Nightwing - Design Phase

Love it! At first I was sad that he wouldn't work with Robin, but then I realized he works with TWO Robins! :lol:

Re: The Book of Nightwing - Design Phase

Not a huge fan of Acrobatic Mastery... I think Maneuver should be fine here. Maybe tack on Disengage if we're really set on it. :shrug:

Love the bonding and general feel, though.

With no Bat-Grapple at all, I think it'd be nice for him to be able to defy elevation on his turn, not just defensively. I also like it as a way to show him progressing in skill as a character.

I'm a fan, obviously, but I'll hold and see what the rest of the gang thinks. :)

Yep. Or Raven and Starfire. Or Red Robin and Robin. Etc., etc.

I'm hoping that even without being a Vigilante, he'll find a nice home in either Titans armies, Vigilante/Sidekick armies, or Vigilante/Titan/Sidekick armies.

We've discussed this one, no changes here. :up:
I snapped pictures of this mini too:

Re: The Book of Nightwing - Design Phase

:up: Looks good bats. I understand what you are doing with Acrobatic Mastery & agree with it, but kind of think it reads a bit clunky in that first sentence it's about defense dice then it's about attack & defense dice. I can't think of any way around to achieve the same outcome so I'm fine with it.

Re: The Book of Nightwing - Design Phase

Um what's the difference between the red or the blue with black suits? Because the newer clix is better looking (just that it's red which I didn't know Knightwing ever wore).

Just different time periods. I've chosen the middle time period (between the original suit and the current, red one). I prefer it overall myself, but mostly I chose it to go with the mini we already have pictures of and the mini that was recommended to me by johnny/LP on this one. :)

Re: The Book of Nightwing - Design Phase

Looks pretty awesome. 8)

I'm good with Mastery and understand the wording. The first line basically establishes how he avoids damage and the rest of it establishes what he can do with the dice results.

I'm also fine with Mastery and adding the ability to use it on his turn because like Bats said, it show maturity/progression in skills, but also and equally or more important is that it works with his normal attack and not with the nasty double special attack. He would use the special attack when engaged anyway, so this is mostly going to be used with his ranged attack and since it's after rolling attack dice, it's not going to gain him height advantage for that attack if he didn't already have it.

Should be fun.

Re: The Book of Nightwing - Design Phase

Great analysis! :up: Looking like we're feeling pretty good about what's in the SP as a whole so far. :)

Re: The Book of Nightwing - Design Phase

Sent to ERB. Initial some time this week, hopefully. :)

Re: The Book of Nightwing - Design Phase

Mind if I take this one? I've still got to pay it forward for Johnny's good deed.

Re: The Book of Nightwing - Design Phase

I'd rather you grab Bouncing Boy from A3n if you're really looking to take one on .... :-D This is one I've been looking forward to for a bit, honestly.

Re: The Book of Nightwing - Design Phase

Good stuff, David! :)

I'll take another look at the wording on Titans, Go!

Can't wait to get him on the battlefield with some of those Sidekicks and Titans! I think it's going to be extra spicy. :-D

Cheers,
Bats

Those are pretty tasty, especially with the Buffalo sauce.

Huh?

Oh,

Titans Go! to Sushi Train!

X-Marker should probably be “X” Order Marker.

That should bond nicely!

Escrima Assault Special Attack

Nice double strike against double figures for double fun.

Acrobatic Master

Similar to Robin’s (Dick Grayson) Acrobatic Maneuver, but this also applies to normal attack rolls, and the falling/engagement provisions aren’t restricted to just movement using this ability. Pretty neat, especially with the provision for normal attacks. This is fantastic, because a whiffed attack with shields would allow you to reposition.

Final Thoughts

We have a nice lineup of Titans now (Sidekicks as well), so Nightwing should prove to be a popular draft. I suspect some folks will cheer when this hits playtesting.

Re: The Book of Nightwing - Design Phase

Good stuff, V! :) We'll definitely make sure to thoroughly test him out!

Cheers,
Bats

Ah, Nightwing, yeah! Thoughts below:

Here's another one for you guys! Once the original Robin, Batman for a while, Dick Grayson's most iconic role at this point might be that of Nightwing! Long time leader of the Teen Titans and Outsiders, and Vigilante on his own right!

I look forward to reading your thoughts as always! :smile:

Thanks,

[Wow, that's pretty solid, isn't it? Three activations on one OM? That seems like quite a power--in high point games, as more Titans are made, this might lead to a pretty solid team. I trust you to test it, but that seems solid, to me.]

ESCRIMA ASSAULT SPECIAL ATTACK
Range 1. Attack 4.
Choose up to two figures to attack. Roll 4 attack dice once for all affected figures. Each figure rolls defense dice separately. After attacking with this special attack, Nightwing may attack with this special attack one additional time.

[Nice. I like it.]

Nightwing never takes falling damage or leaving engagement attacks.

[Have we done this before? I don't recall the attack dice part before. I'll admit that it confused me at first, blending in both attack and defense rolls into one power. I don't think it's a big deal--certainly a player can read it and remember, but it seems odd to mix what feels like two different powers into one. Your call.

I'm glad to see you limit it to normal attacks--that should help balance things. And it makes him a fun unit to play, I assume, when he stays at range and can keep adjusting as he repositions for future shots. Seems fun, just a little oddly couched in the middle of what it otherwise a defense power.]

Thanks for sharing. I'm glad to see him coming out. I trust you to dial him in just right. All best, V :smile:

Heavy Hitter or Mid-Level Hero Test
- Does it pass, Yes or No? Yes.

- What should be the unit's point value? 190-210.
- Give a brief overview. Yipes! He’s coming in a bit high, due largely to the Acrobatic Mastery keeping him alive so well. I think what I’m going to do moving forward is put his normal attack back up to 4 and put his special attack down to 3. I’d like to keep him at 200 or under even with his Titans Go power in play.
Spoiler Alert!

Squad Test
- Does it pass, Yes or No? Yes.

- What should be the unit's point value? 160?
- Give a brief overview. These guys were a total counter to Nightwing with their auto-wounding abilities!

Units: Nightwing vs. Arkham Inmates x3 (180)
Spoiler Alert!

Squad Test
- Does it pass, Yes or No? Yes.

- What should be the unit's point value? 180?
- Give a brief overview. Nightwing fared better here, but even facing only 6 figures, attrition almost wore him down. Ninja used their range to limit the effectiveness of his special attack.
Map: Custom
Units: Nightwing vs. Hand Ninja x2 (170)
Spoiler Alert!

Army Test
- Does it pass, Yes or No? Yes.

- What should be the unit's point value? 190 felt balanced.
- Give a brief overview. Loving Nightwing with the Titans, especially Raven! Titans, Go! is really what’s needed to take the Titans to the area of a competitive team. Just having that one flexible triple activation per round is awesome. Nightwing took out two Gorilla City Warriors, put two wounds on Gorilla Grodd, two wounds on Firefly, and four wounds on Deathstroke here (all of which Deathstroke healed). This was closer than it looked, and tons of fun!
Map: Custom
Units: Nightwing (190), Kid Flash (110), Cyborg (200), Raven (190), Starfire (210), Beast Boy (60) Beast form Pterodactyl (40) (1,000) vs. Gorilla City Warriors x3 (375), Gorilla Grodd (225), Deathstroke (280), Firefly (120) (1,000)
Spoiler Alert!

Army Test
- Does it pass, Yes or No? Yes.

- What should be the unit's point value? I could still see 190, but his army did not have a great game.
- Give a brief overview. Nightwing was out by Round 3 here. The villains winning initiative in three of the first four rounds let Joker’s Reorganized Chaos really devastate the heroes here!
Map: Custom
Units: Batman (200), Alfred (60), Nightwing (190), Robin (Damian) (80), Red Robin (160), Oracle (110), Speedy (Roy) (90), Kid Flash (110) (1,000) vs. Clayface (240), Hush (220), Joker (190), Harley Quinn (130), Two-Face (140), Mad Hatter (90) (1,000)
Spoiler Alert!

_____________________________________________________________

Army Test
- Does it pass, Yes or No? Yes.

- What should be the unit's point value? 190 felt good! Raven’s dominance shook this one up, not Nightwing’s. This helps balance out the last army test, though!
- Give a brief overview. This was closer than it looked, with Raven the clear MVP here! Her Team Empath and Soul Self combination allowed her to heal 4 wounds from Nightwing, 2 wounds from Speedy, and convert 5 of her own wounds into wounds for the opponent, including 2 on Professor X. Auto-wounds are the bane of the Professor X builds, and Raven was able to do that. In retrospect, I should have targeted her earlier, then followed with Nightwing!
Map: Custom
Units: Nightwing (190), Kid Flash (110), Speedy (Roy) (90), Wonder Girl (140), Starfire (210), Raven (190), Aqualad (60) (990) vs. Professor X, Cyclops, Beast, Jean Grey, Angel, Nightcrawler (990)
Spoiler Alert!

Re: The Book of Nightwing - Design Phase

Got heavy hitters done and he's coming in a little strong! Like 190-210 even without Titans, Go! coming into play. So I've reduced his special attack to 3 in hopes of helping.

Re: The Book of Nightwing - Design Phase

A little worried about the 3 activations per OM.
