The Book of Mister Terrific (Terry Sloane)

Re: The Book of Mister Terrific - Terry Sloane(Vote for Publ

Yea

Pretty sure we're planning to do him, Hawkman, and Power Girl in the Danger Room. And things are clear there right now, so we just need the votes to go through. :)

Yep, the plan is to send all three of them out as a playtesting round, and repost most or all of the finished JSA with them.

Re: The Book of Mister Terrific - Terry Sloane(Playtesting)

This passes :)

Re: The Book of Mister Terrific - Terry Sloane(Playtesting)

Are the points correct in the SP? It still has a question mark listed, and I wanted to make sure we had the right cost when we post him to the Danger Room.

Re: The Book of Mister Terrific - Terry Sloane(Playtesting)

Yes. I like to leave the question mark till it hits final editing as that is when it is set in stone so to speak.

NAME OF THE PLAYTEST UNIT: (MISTER TERRIFIC (TERRY SLOAN))
Army Test
Map: Custom (HYDRA GEHENNA BASE with 2 small houses instead of platforms)
Units: Mister Terrific (Terry Sloan) (140), Hawkman (Carter Hall) (220), Starman (Ted Knight) (190), Flash (Jay Garrick) (220), Doctor Mid-Nite (150), Sandman (Wesley Dodds) (80) (1,000) VSFantastic Four (1,000)

Damage Done: 5 Wounds to Invisible Woman.

When they were KO’d: N/A

Man of a Thousand Talents: Used in Round 1 to move Mister Terrific up 4 spaces, then to give a +1 to Gravity Rod. In Round 2 and 3, Sandman advances 4 spaces each. Nets three extra skulls in Round 3 attacks on Invisible Woman. Nets two extra shields in Round 3 and 4 each to defend Thing’s attacks. Nets one extra shield in Round 5 to defend Thing’s attack.

Champion of All Things Fair: During Round 1, this was used to help spare Starman from an early wound when he whiffed on an attack from Human Torch. In Round 2, it grants a reroll to Flash, but the second roll is poor as well. Round 4, helps Hawkman avoid 2 wounds.

Mister Terrific shone here, especially with his rerolls letting him act as a meat shield while the rest of the JSA circled around, strategically moving figures and then picking them off. Champion of All Things Fair saved allies from three wounds, which helped keep the whole team together more effectively. The combination of Hawkman and Mister Terrific really brings this faction together powerfully.
The dice seemed to slightly favor the JSA overall here and the Fan Four is the type of team that if they lose a key piece early, they tend to lose big, but Mister Terrific felt a tad undercosted for how well he performed here.

Spoiler Alert!

Man of a Thousand Talents: Used at the start of Rounds 2 and 3 to advance Hawkman 4 spaces. Used frequently for attack and defense rerolls.

Champion of All Things Fair: Saves Doctor Mid-Nite from a wound in Round 3, and Flash from a wound in Round 4.

Summary of the game:
This was a solid match up. Losing Starman early really hurt the JSA, but they battled back, thanks largely to the contributions of Mister Terrific, Hawkman, and Flash, who each empowered each other well. Sandman had two key Sleeping Gas turn losses for Prof X. as well, but the synergy of the X-Men just couldn’t be held down, with Jean and Angel keeping Prof X. alive to the end.
Spoiler Alert!

Re: The Book of Mister Terrific - Terry Sloane(Playtesting)

I agree with, a slight cost increase. Do you think 10 or 20 would be better here?

Re: The Book of Mister Terrific - Terry Sloane(Playtesting)

Give me until Friday and I'll run a couple more to have a better idea. Hopefully we can get someone else's test in that time too to help.

Re: The Book of Mister Terrific - Terry Sloane(Playtesting)

The win against the FanFour is big, but they also lost to the Classic X-Men, which is not a super strong team, so I'm not very worried. 150 wouldn't be out of place here though.

THOUGHTS ON THE TESTED UNIT'S COST, BALANCE, & DRAFTABILITY: 140 seems reasonable for Mister Terrific. His boosts are nice and he has solid offense for his cost, but he’s not very tough and it’s hard to keep him up with the team.

GENERAL THOUGHTS ON THE TESTED UNIT: To be honest, I’m not completely satisfied with the current write-up. Individually, the effects of Man of a Thousand Talents are thematic and useful, but the only-one-effect-at-a-time mechanic doesn’t feel thematic and kind of bogs down the game; it adds a lot to keep track of and adds time to the start of your turns (as you have to plan out your turns in advance). Personally, I’d rather see the design simplified by making all of the effects active the whole game, and just bump his cost if necessary. My :2cents:.

Re: The Book of Mister Terrific - Terry Sloane(Playtesting)

I did find tracking/planning which to use pretty tricky as well. Especially with the free movement one having other restrictions, it got confusing at times. I rarely used the D20 boost due to the rerolls being so useful. The free movement I used early, but toggling between that and the rerolls was tough.

In my experience, though, the rerolls made him a tough out and were really useful. Making them on all the time will definitely bump his cost. I'm cool with that, though.

Re: The Book of Mister Terrific - Terry Sloane(Playtesting)

If it's posted and I missed it then just update the OP otherwise we probably should post a request for this mini as well.

Re: The Book of Mister Terrific - Terry Sloane(Playtesting)

Since the design itself is a tad up in the air right now based on Viegon's suggestions, I'm going to hold off on any more testing here and focus on Power Girl tomorrow instead (if I even have a chance to test!).

Feel free to try him without having to choose between the options in MoaT.

Re: The Book of Mister Terrific - Terry Sloane(Playtesting)

OK, will do! I'm more set up to test him right now anyway.

Man of a Thousand Talents: Round 1: Adds +1 to Gravity Rod to help it hit, and move a hex (no wounds caused). Round 3: Gives Sandman a free move of 4, gives Mister Terrific an extra skull on a reroll. Round 4: Gives Starman a free move of 4. Round 5: Gives Starman a free move of 4. Round 6: Gives Mister Terrific 2 extra skulls on reroll and a bonus move of 4 that he used to reclaim the Cosmic Converter Belt, then another bonus move to climb back onto even height with an enemy. Round 7: Gives Mister Terrific a bonus move to move away from Martian Manhunter (who had height), then another bonus move to reclaim the Cosmic Converter Belt. Round 8: Gives Mr. T. a bonus move away from Black Canary to avoid giving her height, then an extra skull on BC in a reroll, then two more extra skulls on BC on rerolls. Round 9: Gives Mr. T. 3 extra skulls on a reroll on BC, and an extra shield on a defensive reroll. Gives him 2 extra skulls on a reroll on Vixen.

Champion of All Things Fair: Used in Round 6 to give Starman a reroll, but Starman was still KOed.

Summary of the game: Mister Terrific helps some in mid-game, but as soon as Hawkman falls, while Superman and Martian Manhunter still stand strong, it’s over. Mister Terrific helps make it close in clean up, where those rerolls really shine.
Spoiler Alert!

Man of a Thousand Talents: Round 2, gives two bonus moves to Superman, and 1 bonus move to Hawkman. Round 3, gives a bonus move to Hawkman. Round 4, gives a bonus move to Starman and helps Gravity Rod hit, then gives himself a bonus move. Round 5, gives Green Lantern two bonus moves. Round 6, gives Sandman a bonus move, then gives Mister Terrific an extra skull on reroll to help him KO Surfer. Round 7, gives Green Lantern a bonus move. Round 8, he uses a bonus move to take height.

Champion of All Things Fair: Helps Sandman avoid a wound in Round 2, and gives Sandman 2 extra shields late in the game, but can’t save him.

Summary of the game: Losing four early turns to Sleeping Gas and then having another, weak turn due to rolling a 1 and a 4 on Fantastic Leader 4 crippled Mister Fantastic early on. This led to early deaths by Invisible Woman and Mister Fantastic, which hurt them immensely. Silver Surfer made things interesting mid-game, but the dice favored Mister Terrific over him. Human Torch got a strong enough Supernova to make it look close on paper in the end, but his team was beaten soundly here.
Spoiler Alert!

Who won? List figures remaining in the winning army (include life remaining for heroes): Hawkman with 2 Lives, Mister Terrific with 1 Life, Starman with 1 Life, and Green Lantern with Full Life win Turn 2, Round 8.

THOUGHTS ON THE TESTED UNIT'S COST, BALANCE, & DRAFTABILITY: I’d probably bump him to 150-160 with the change. His movement and Champions of All Things Fair synergies help the rest of the faction well. There isn’t much use for his D20 boost, but it did come into play in each game here. His rerolls make him a nice second attack for Golden Age Heroism or a solid clean up figure for his cost.

GENERAL THOUGHTS ON THE TESTED UNIT: I really like how his powers fit in with the faction. With all parts of Man of a Thousand Talents on at once, it had a ton of usage.

Re: The Book of Mister Terrific - Terry Sloane(Playtesting)

I agree with him, definitely needing a point bump. I'm thinking 160 and then dropping it from there if necessary. Thoughts?

Re: The Book of Mister Terrific - Terry Sloane(Playtesting)

I'll take a stab at rewording later.

Re: The Book of Mister Terrific - Terry Sloane(Playtesting)

If you don't need to choose anymore:

MAN OF A THOUSAND TALENTS
After revealing a numbered Order Marker on a card you control, you may choose one of all of the following to be are in effect until the next time you reveal a numbered Order Marker on a card you control:

* When Mister Terrific attacks with a normal attack you may re-roll any dice that did not show skulls once per attack, or and when defending against a normal attack, you may re-roll any dice that did not show shields once per attack; or

* When Mister Terrific or a Mystery Man Hero within 6 clear sight spaces rolls the 20-sided die, you may add or subtract 1 from that roll; or

* Choose an opponent’s figure within 6 clear sight spaces of Mister Terrific. Whenever an Order Marker is revealed on the chosen figure's Army Card, you may immediately move Mister Terrific or a Mystery Man Hero you control within clear sight of Mister Terrific up to 4 spaces.

Sounds good. I wouldn't be surprised to see him end up at 150, but 160 is certainly in play as well.

quozl's wording looks good. I was doing the choosing an opponent's figure once per round for the bonus movement, but I don't think it would've really affected my results to do it this way, and this way is probably cleaner to word.

Re: The Book of Mister Terrific - Terry Sloane(Playtesting)

 I like that q.

I don't know, this seems weird to me. We don't normally state that powers are always in effect, they just are. And the OM reveal wording feels clunky. I honestly think we'd be best off splitting them into their own powers.

How about:

OLYMPIC LEVEL ATHLETE
When Mister Terrific attacks with a normal attack you may re-roll any dice that did not show skulls once per attack. When Mister Terrific defends against a normal attack, you may re-roll any dice that did not show shields once per attack.

GOLDEN AGE TACTICIAN
After revealing a numbered Order Marker on a card you control, you may choose an opponent’s figure within 6 clear sight spaces of Mister Terrific to be the chosen figure until the next time you reveal a numbered Order Marker on a card you control. Whenever an Order Marker is revealed on the chosen figure's Army Card, you may immediately move Mister Terrific or a Mystery Man Hero you control within clear sight of Mister Terrific up to 4 spaces. When Mister Terrific or a Mystery Man Hero within 6 clear sight spaces rolls the 20-sided die, you may add or subtract 1 from that roll.

Re: The Book of Mister Terrific - Terry Sloane(Playtesting)

I updated the Danger Room with what's in the SP just to make sure any tests done there get the right mechanics. Splitting into powers would be fine. At this point it seems like we're mostly just tweaking for word flow and clarity, not mechanics.

I think this is better than the "always in effect" wording.
