Character Bio - Orphaned as a baby he had nothing but his first name and a photograph of his parents. Around age 8, Evan is sexually assaulted by an older boy, who Evan in self defense kills and drowns in a creek. Never caught, Evan leaves the orphanage at 16 with his parents' photograph.
He settles in Glasgow, taking up a life that leads to crime and eventually takes up employment as an assassin. He becomes one of the most renowned mercenaries in the United Kingdom.

One day, he has two hits scheduled, and due to an eye injury is barely able to make out his second target. After firing his shot, he recognizes the target as his father. At the funeral, Evan sees his mother.

Over the next few days, he tries to work up the courage to see her, but visits her too late, discovering that she has committed suicide. Stricken with grief at the loss of both parents, Evan decides to turn himself in but is instead picked up by a consortium of U.S. government and big business interests who offer him the costume and weapons of the original Mirror Master in exchange for his services.

Eventually tiring of government service he banished his handlers to another dimension. Using his new skills and array of weapons he continued the tradition of menacing the Flash as the criminal Mirror Master.

-Rulings and Clarifications-
  • Q: If I roll X for Through The Looking Glass, but there is no empty space exactly X spaces away that I can place the figure on, do I not get to place the figure at all?
  • A: No, you do not.

SPECIES = HUMAN
UNIQUENESS = UNIQUE HERO
CLASS = ROGUE
PERSONALITY = TRICKY

SIZE/HEIGHT = MEDIUM 5

LIFE = 4

MOVE = 5
RANGE = 5
ATTACK = 3
DEFENSE = 3

POINTS = 130

THROUGH THE LOOKING GLASS
After moving and before attacking, you may choose Mirror Master or any figure adjacent to Mirror Master. Roll the 20-sided die. Place the chosen figure on an empty space exactly X spaces away from its original placement, if possible, where X equals the number rolled on the 20-sided die. Figures moved by this special power will not take any leaving engagement attacks.

MIRROR MIRAGE
When Mirror Master is attacked and at least one skull is rolled, you may immediately place 2 Mirror Markers face down on any empty spaces within 3 spaces of Mirror Master. The opponent that controls the attacking figure must choose one Mirror Marker. If the chosen Mirror Marker has Mirror Master's face on it, roll defense dice normally. If the chosen Mirror Marker does not have Mirror Master's face on it, place Mirror Master on the space occupied by the chosen Mirror Marker and Mirror Master ignores the attack. Mirror Master will not take any leaving engagement attacks when moved by this special power. After using this special power, remove all Mirror Markers from the battlefield.

Re: Mirror Master - Design Phase

Neat mechanics here. :) This guy sounds like a pest.

I will say that placing markers on the battlefield is uncharted territory. Typically glyphs are used for that function. However you could just as easily leave those markers on MM's card then afterwards move him 3 spaces if successful.

Being that they don't remain on the battlefield afterwards I think your original can work too.

Re: Mirror Master - Design Phase

That's no slouch of a first power. Let your opponent move out his heavy hitter. Put this guy in the center of a 7-hex, with 6 SHIELD Agents on the other 6 spaces and then trade him places with your opponent's heavy hitter. OUCH! Supes would take 6 leaving engagement attacks for Heroic Duty. Swap him for Professor X, Red Skull, Mr. F, etc. Nerf City, here we come.

Needs to at least have a clear sight restriction, a space limitation, and a frequency limitation.

Re: Mirror Master - Design Phase

Agreed with the need of a clear sight restriction, space limitation, and frequency limitation. After testing Beyonder, I know how nasty such powers can get.

A few suggested alterations:

MIRROR MIRAGE
When Mirror Master is attacked and at least one skull is rolled, you may immediately place 4 Mirror Markers face down on any empty spaces within 3 spaces of Mirror Master. The opponent that controls the attacking figure, must choose one Mirror Marker. If the chosen Mirror Marker has Mirror Master's face on it, roll defense dice normally. If the chosen Mirror Marker does not have Mirror Master's face on it, turn all the Mirror Markers face up and place Mirror Master on the space occupied by the Mirror Marker with his face on it. After using this special power, remove all Mirror Markers from the battlefield.

Re: Mirror Master - Design Phase

You know I love this writeup a lot. :D:up:

I think I agree with SirG that THROUGH THE LOOKING GLASS should have a clear sight restriction.

Also, keep in mind that the MIRROR MIRAGE power basically gives him a 75% chance of escaping any attack, without accounting for human intuition, so we may want to cut it down to 3 markers instead (giving him a 33% chance of escaping all attacks).

Re: Mirror Master - Design Phase

Suggested restrictions ...

THROUGH THE LOOKING GLASS
Instead of moving, you may remove one unrevealed Order Marker from this card and choose one figure within 12 clear sight spaces of Mirror Master. You may switch Mirror Master with the chosen figure. Figures moved by Through the Looking Glass do not take leaving engagement attacks.

Re: Mirror Master - Design Phase

3 markers sounds good to me - less to manage on the playing table as well.

Re: Mirror Master - Design Phase

MIRROR MIRAGE
When Mirror Master is attacked and at least one skull is rolled, you may immediately place 3 Mirror Markers face down on any empty spaces within 3 spaces of Mirror Master. The opponent that controls the attacking figure must choose one Mirror Marker. If the chosen Mirror Marker has Mirror Master's face on it, roll defense dice normally. If the chosen Mirror Marker does not have Mirror Master's face on it, turn all the Mirror Markers face up and place Mirror Master on the space occupied by the Mirror Marker with his face on it. After using this special power, remove all Mirror Markers from the battlefield.

The changes here look good except I don't think we need the extra bit in bold (not talking about the heading ;)).

For through the looking glass, I am ok with the OM removal but the clear sight isn't anywhere near thematic. I'll think about other ways to de-power it.

Cheers

Re: Mirror Master - Design Phase

Order Marker removal should actually be enough of a power check really. Go with that A3n. I truly believe that will work just fine.

Re: Mirror Master - Design Phase

Yeah, it'll allow one devastating "freebie" per round with the X-Marker, but you'll have to pay for the rest. I think it's at least worth trying out with only those restrictions. The one thing is that if Mirror Master sells out to put an enemy in a tough spot right off the bat, he's at least also putting himself in a tough spot. A lot of how to counter him will be about how you set up your startzone (making him and Human Torch an interesting combo, actually - especially if you threw in Doctor Fate).

Re: Mirror Master - Design Phase

So from the feedback this is what he looks like at the moment:

NAME = MIRROR MASTER

SECRET IDENTITY = EVAN MCCULLOCH

SPECIES = HUMAN
UNIQUENESS = UNIQUE HERO
CLASS = ROGUE
PERSONALITY = TRICKY

SIZE/HEIGHT = MEDIUM 5

LIFE = 4

MOVE = 5
RANGE = 5
ATTACK = 4
DEFENSE = 4

POINTS = .

THROUGH THE LOOKING GLASS
Instead of moving, you may remove one unrevealed Order Marker from this card and choose one other figure on the battlefield. You may switch Mirror Master with the chosen figure. Figures moved by Through the Looking Glass do not take leaving engagement attacks.

MIRROR MIRAGE
When Mirror Master is attacked and at least one skull is rolled, you may immediately place 3 Mirror Markers face down on any empty spaces within 3 spaces of Mirror Master. Re: Mirror Master - Design Phase

I know points have not been determined, but consider that he can change places with Prof X, Invisible Woman, or any other key figure in the opponent's army and just decimate it. His cost will need to be high enough so that it hurts to sacrifice him.

Re: Mirror Master - Design Phase

I agree with SirG. However, those armies that depend on those figures, also happen to be some of our best and it couldn't hurt too much for them to have one or two more clear counters. With that said, I definitely respect SirG's concern for balance and consideration with points and how it affects our metagame figure pieces.

Re: Mirror Master - Design Phase

OP Updated.

If it turns out THROUGH THE LOOKING GLASS is only slightly too powerful we can make it a numbered OM.

Cheers

Re: Mirror Master - Design Phase

I am happy with this design. This is very innovative. Good work guys.

Re: Mirror Master - Design Phase

Updated figure info.

The figure used for this unit is a Heroclix figure from the Origin set.
Its model number and name are #049-051 / Mirror Master.

According to the DC database he also uses his mirrors for flight:

Equipment

  • Mirror Pack: which gave him the power of flight, mirrors that let him see 20 seconds into the future, and 3-D mirror duplicates of himself. Pretty soon, he could use mirrors to create all kinds of illusions, and could even travel and communicate through one mirror to another through a “mirror dimension”. He could also use distorted mirrors to enlarge or shrink objects. He became so good that he could use any reflected surface to his own end.
Weapons
  • Mirror Gun: that shot laser beams

Re: Mirror Master - Design Phase

Yeah the flight thing wasn't iconic so I didn't include it.

Re: Mirror Master - Design Phase

He couldn't switch with IW as that would require clear sight. She'd be immune with Intangibility.

:confused: As it is currently written it doesn't require clear sight?

I misremembered the power. Shouldn't it be required though?
Thematically no all that is required for him is a surface that provides a reflection (even a belt buckle).

One of the thoughts I had to de-power was to make it so the chosen figure had to be adjacent to another figure.
