NOTE: Laufey requires 1x Glyph of Casket of Ancient Winters

The figure used for this unit is a Hasbro figure from the Thor: The Mighty Avenger set.

Its model number and name are #6 / Invasion Frost Giant.

This Card and Figure below is to be used as a Laufey proxy by painting the entire figure's skin in a blue scheme of your choice. This proxy was chosen due to the amount of scapers who currently own Jotun and can use him for this card unpainted.

The figure used for this unit is a Repainted HeroScape figure from the Raknar’s Vision set.
Its model number and name are #4/5 / Jotun.

Character Bio - Laufey's origin is surrounded in mystery. Being a Frost Giant, he is a descendant of Ymir, the first Frost Giant. Laufey was King of the Frost Giants until he was killed in a battle against Odin. Neither Laufey or Odin knew that the battle was actually part of a plan between Loki and his younger self, which would lead to Loki being adopted by Odin. Laufey actually survived his fight against Odin, but was killed by Loki via time travel as revenge for all the beatings Laufey had given his son. (ComicVine, 2011)

-Rulings and Clarifications-
  • Base Clarification: Laufey is a double-based figure.
_________________________________________________________________

-Combinations and Synergies-

Re: The Book of Laufey - Design

NAME = LAUFEY

SPECIES = ETIN
UNIQUENESS = UNIQUE HERO
CLASS = KING
PERSONALITY = FEROCIOUS

SIZE/HEIGHT = HUGE 13

LIFE = 10

MOVE = 7
RANGE = 1
ATTACK = 7
DEFENSE = 7

POINTS = 360

QUEST FOR ETERNAL WINTER
Start the game with the Glyph of Casket of Ancient Winters on this card. After moving and before attacking, if the Glyph of Casket of Ancient Winters is on this card, you may roll the 20-sided die. After rolling, you may reveal an "X" Order Marker on this card to add 5 to your roll. If you roll 15 or higher, place the Glyph of Casket of Ancient Winters power-side up on any space Laufey occupies.

FROST GIANT RAID
After revealing an Order Marker on this card and instead of taking a turn with Laufey, you may take a turn with up to two Frost Giants you control within 8 clear sight spaces of Laufey. When taking a turn with this special power, a Frost Giant may add 2 to its move if it ends its move adjacent to an opponent's figure.

ICE RESISTANCE
Slippery Ice and Heavy Snow only count as 1 space when moving. Add 1 die to Laufey’s defense while on an ice or snow space.

SUPER STRENGTH

Re: The Book of Laufey - Design

I like it! No complaints here except that I think he's worth considering as an Event Hero. I know Loki and Thor aren't, but I think Laufey and Odin should be.

That, the cost and whether this figure will even work on a double base were my only questions here.

Re: The Book of Laufey - Design

hmm, good double base question - does anybody have this guy? I'm definitely pro Event Hero, though. I think if Laufey is around, it's an event. And I think he'll also be expensive enough to justify it.

IMO, Laufey should not be an Event Hero because strength-wise he is not on Odin's level. Powerful Asgardian entity? Yes. God-like being? No.

As far as double base goes, no he will NOT fit on a double base. He takes up most of a 4 inch Diameter circle. He is HUGE and he is kneeling. One thing I find weird is that this guy is WAY bigger than the Surtur figure, which I don't like.

Re: The Book of Laufey - Design

Hmm ... sounds like that mini's not useable after all ... if that's the case (and creative rebasing can't solve the issue) anyone have any ideas on another mini we could use for this guy?

Re: The Book of Laufey - Design

It doesn't look usable, so I really wasn't sure. Does DnD have any other Frost Giant figures?

Re: The Book of Laufey - Design

Availability on most of those is really poor, though ... not sure if they're more available on other sites at all.

Re: The Book of Laufey - Design

Maybe we should use Griffin's repainted Feral Troll (or one of his other suggested figures) for the Frost Giant and use the Frost Giant figure here?

Re: The Book of Laufey - Design

If we're going to do a repaint for anything, I'd rather do it here so there's only one thing you'd need to repaint rather than several.

Re: The Book of Laufey - Design

Design looks great tickle. :) Not sure about the figure, that's a tough one. I'll do some searching.

Re: The Book of Laufey - Design

OOOOHHHH! What do you guys think of putting a coat of blue paint on this guy? There's quite a few available and pretty cheap. The swirling around his leg could be the Casket of Ancient Winters effect.

Not sure on the size, but D&D giants should all be relatively the same size....hopefully. :)

Re: The Book of Laufey - Design

GP, that is exactly who I am using for Laufey. I have had him on my purchase list for some time. The real question is, how does he compare to the already chosen DnD Frost Giant?

QUEST FOR ETERNAL WINTER
Start the game with the Glyph of Casket of Ancient Winters on this card. At the start of each of Laufey's turns, if the Glyph of Casket of Ancient Winters is still on this card or unoccupied on the battlefield, you may roll the 20-sided die. If you roll a 15 or higher place the Glyph of Casket of Ancient Winters on either space Laufey currently occupies. You may reveal an "X" Order Marker on this card to add 5 to your roll.

FROST GIANT RAID
After revealing an Order Marker on this card and instead of taking a turn with Laufey, you may take a turn with up to two Frost Giants you control within 8 clear sight spaces of Laufey. When taking a turn with a Frost Giant Raid, a Frost Giant may add 2 to its move if it ends its move adjacent to an opponent's figure.

1 - I reveal an OM on Laufey's card.
2 - I start my turn with Laufey and roll my D20 for the Quest.
3 - I now decide to NOT take a turn with him and take a turn with two Frost Giants instead....

This is a bit of timing and clarity confusion. Also, why does the unoccupied glyph summon or teleport to Laufey? That is just weird. My suggested fixes, with a few small grammar edits are:

The crazy beards you mean? Hmmm not sure. That figure is perfect for Laufey though. Even looks like him.

Re: The Book of Laufey - Design

I agree it looks great for him, hands down. And in my mind, that figure choice for Laufey should be the standard, and we should be looking for Frost Giants that compare with him. With that said, we need to see some pics with that Laufey mini next to any intended Frost Giant, because they should either be the same size, or Laufey should be bigger.

Re: The Book of Laufey - Design

I'll order that mini in the next few days and try to get some comparison shots. I have four of the Frost Giants to compare him with.

Re: The Book of Laufey - Design

Thanks for the wording help Griffin. Updated the SP with the suggested changes.

Re: The Book of Laufey - Design

I am also gonna be ordering that figure.

Hey, one Laufey possibility could be a repaint of Jotun, but I think that may be a last resort kind of option.

Re: The Book of Laufey - Design

So, is this ready for an initial? :) I'm happy to take it on next.

Re: The Book of Laufey - Design

Unless anyone has any objections, I'd say it's good to go. Thanks.

Re: The Book of Laufey - Design

Is the SP fully updated? There's still that spoiler text in there detailing "changes to be made after the breathing period." :p
