Character Bio - Johnny Thunder is the seventh son of a seventh son, born at 7 a.m. on Saturday, July 7, the seventh day of the week, the seventh day of the seventh month in 1917. Because of this, he was given possession of the pink, lightning-haired genie-like Thunderbolt, which he summons with the magic words "Cei-U" (pronounced "say you").

Johnny accidentally joined the Justice Society when wishing out loud that he could be a member and was immediately taken to their meeting by Thunderbolt. Despite recurring impatience with his stupidity, his fellow JSAers genuinely valued Johnny's good-heartedness and dedication and considered him a friend. Furthermore, the Thunderbolt's vast power may have contributed to Johnny's continued JSA membership, his frequent blunders notwithstanding, since the more competent heroes doubtlessly thought it wise to keep an eye on the pair whenever possible. He finally became a member after the Flash left and the group told him to capture Mister X, which he succeeded in accidentally doing. (adapted from Wikipedia)

Re: The Book of Johnny Thunder (Design)

NAME = JOHNNY THUNDER

SPECIES = HUMAN
UNIQUENESS = UNIQUE HERO
CLASS = MYSTERY MAN
PERSONALITY = GULLIBLE
SIZE/HEIGHT = MEDIUM 5

LIFE = 3
MOVE = 5
RANGE = 1
ATTACK = 2
DEFENSE = 2
POINTS = 20

SAY YOU
After revealing an Order Marker on this card and instead of taking a turn with Johnny, you may remove all Wound Markers from Thunderbolt's card and place Thunderbolt, if he is in your army, on any empty space within 6 clear sight spaces of Johnny and immediately take a turn with Thunderbolt.

THUNDERBOLT PROTECTION
Figures engaged with Thunderbolt cannot target Mystery Man or Protégé figures you control for any attacks or special powers that require clear sight or make leaving engagement attacks against them.

SOLE COMMAND
Whenever Thunderbolt is not within 13 spaces of Johnny, remove Thunderbolt from the battlefield. Whenever Johnny is destroyed or removed from the battlefield, Thunderbolt is also removed from the battlefield.

Re: The Book of Johnny Thunder (Design)

Sole Command would probably read better with a slight change.

SOLE COMMAND
Whenever Thunderbolt is not within 13 spaces away fromof Johnny, remove Thunderbolt from the battlefield. Whenever Johnny Thunder is destroyed or removed from the battlefield, Thunderbolt is also removed from the battlefield.
Also, should it happen as soon as he moves more than 13 spaces from Johnny, or should he be able to finish out that turn first?

Re: The Book of Johnny Thunder (Design)

Good call. And as soon as. No finishing the turn.

Re: The Book of Johnny Thunder (Design)

Was going to make the same suggestion as Karat. Looks good otherwise!

Re: The Book of Johnny Thunder (Design)

Seems a little odd that you can "take a turn" with Thunderbolt and move him out of range and he just evaporates instead of completing his orders but then I don't know the character so it could be thematic.

Re: The Book of Johnny Thunder (Design)

He’s a genie. You can totally tell them to bugger off to their lamp or wherever.

Re: The Book of Johnny Thunder (Design)

Looks like these are good to go! I'll get an initial started soon.

Re: The Book of Johnny Thunder (Design)

We vote to move to the initial, right?

Edit: We do. Also, a Competitive and Consistency Checklist run is always welcome. :-D

Re: The Book of Johnny Thunder (Design)

Oh, then I propose we move Johnny and Thunderbolt to Initial Testing.

As for the checklists, I think they should be done after the initial so we can see how theory interacts with actual play.

Re: The Book of Johnny Thunder (Design) VOTE for Initial

Fair enough. yea

Re: The Book of Johnny Thunder (Design) VOTE for Initial

Yea

Is Gullible a reuse for the personality here?

Re: The Book of Johnny Thunder (Design) VOTE for Initial

Yea, I'm stoked because these two are long overdue.

Re: The Book of Johnny Thunder (Initial)

Got initials done. Just need to type them up. Also will post checklist answers.

One question for the checklists, is there a way to negate your own figures? Because that would be super powerful to do to Johnny.

Competitive Checklist
Spoiler Alert!

Consistency checklist
Spoiler Alert!

Zatanna doesn't specify enemy Unique Heroes, unfortunately (I'm terrible at factoring in cheese). Should Sole Command go on Thunderbolt instead? She can't negate Event Heroes.

Re: The Book of Johnny Thunder (Initial)

She can make the T-Rex no power!
Hmm, may have to consider fixing that. That feels like an unnecessary mechanic to have to design around.

As her LD, I would be just fine changing her to opponent's Unique Heroes. You all would just need to propose that and vote it through. :)

Not what I'm seeing....

Start the game with 3 black Negation Markers on this card. After taking a turn with Zatanna, if you have at least 1 Negation Marker on this card, you may choose any opponent's unique figure adjacent to Zatanna. Roll the 20-sided die, subtracting 3 from the roll if the chosen figure has the Magical Defense special power. If you roll 17 or higher, place a Negation Marker on the chosen figure's Army Card and remove all unrevealed Order Markers from it. All of that figure's special powers are negated for the entire game.

At least in Johnny's case, I wouldn't worry over much about a way to negate him that costs > 200 points anyway, though, unless that thing were also really great for Thunderbolt in some other way.

Well, thank goodness for that. :p

In other news, I've enrolled in the School for Kids Who Can't Read Good ....
