Character Bio - Impossible Man travelled to Earth after he got bored with his home planet of Poppup, where the evolutionary processes has sped up so much that he can change shape at will. When he got to Earth, he wasn't doing anything evil, just having fun. Because he is so powerful, even the Fantastic 4 couldn't do anything to stop the destruction he was accidentally causing. Eventually Mister Fantastic realized that they couldn't do anything to stop him from doing what he wanted, the only way to stop him was to ignore him and cause him to leave Earth out of boredom.

SHAPESHIFTING PRANKSTER
Before taking a turn with Impossible Man, you may choose an adjacent Unique Hero. Roll the 20-sided die, adding 8 to your roll if the chosen figure is an Adventurer or Scientist. If you roll 16 or higher, for this turn you may use any special powers on the chosen figure's Army Card. If the special power refers to the chosen figure or the chosen figure's card, it refers to Impossible Man or Impossible Man's card instead.

IGNORED
If a Unique or Event Hero starts its turn engaged with Impossible Man, the figure may choose to ignore Impossible Man. A figure that ignores Impossible Man cannot target him for any attacks or special powers this turn. If Impossible Man is ignored, he receives one wound and cannot make any leaving engagement attacks this turn.

POPPUPIAN POP
When Impossible Man defends against an attack, and you roll at least two blanks, Impossible Man takes no damage and you may immediately place him on any empty space up to 6 spaces away. When Impossible Man starts to pop, he will not take any leaving engagement attacks.

Re: The Book of Impossible Man - Design

Good stuff. Though the Shapeshifting power having a bit of overlap with Doctor Doom's Power Drain has me a tad nervous, I think limiting it to Adventurers/Scientists to put him in more of an anti-Fan Four faction really helps with that.

Re: The Book of Impossible Man - Design

I might work up another option for you guys to look at later today.

Re: The Book of Impossible Man - Design

Poppupian Shapeshifting v 2
Before taking a turn with Impossible Man, you may choose of the following for this turn:
• Add 2 to Impossible Man's attack,
• Add 4 to Impossible Man's range,
• When Impossible Man attacks, he may attack one additional time,
or
• After moving and before attacking, you may choose one small or medium figure within 2 clear sight spaces of Impossible Man. Place the chosen figure on any empty space within 3 spaces of its original placement. Chosen figures do not take any leaving engagement attacks.

With this power, I would drop his attack value to 1. These options are flexible and I am open to suggestions for more.

Re: The Book of Impossible Man - Design

Should that read choose "one" of the following?
I think to keep it nice and clean, I'd go with the first three options and cut the fourth. He doesn't really strike me as the type who needs a "throw" power.

Re: The Book of Impossible Man - Design

Like this? I'd really like him to fall in the 400-450 point range if possible just because I feel like that's his power level.
Poppupian Shapeshifting v 2.1
Before taking a turn with Impossible Man, you may choose one of the following for this turn:
• Add 2 to Impossible Man's attack,
• Add 4 to Impossible Man's range,
or
• When Impossible Man attacks, he may attack one additional time.

I'm not sure of the theme here, please explain. I understood your current one in the OP, that made sense with the character, but I am not following the theme of this version.

Cheers

Re: The Book of Impossible Man - Design

It was just an option to allow him to his harder, farther or faster as he wanted.

Re: The Book of Impossible Man - Design

Alright so is everyone happy with the OP? It's been 48 hours and I haven't had many comments.

POPPUPIAN POP
Instead of moving Impossible Man normally, you may choose any empty space within 8 spaces of Impossible Man. Place Impossible Man on the chosen space. When Impossible Man starts to Pop, if he is engaged he will not take any leaving engagement attacks.

POPPUPIAN SHAPESHIFTING
Before taking a turn with Impossible Man, you may choose an Adventurer or Scientist Hero within clear sight of Impossible Man. Roll the 20-sided die. If you roll 12 or higher, during this turn you may use any special powers on the chosen figure's Army Card. If the special power refers to the chosen figure or the chosen figure's card, it refers to Impossible Man or Impossible Man's card instead.

IGNORED
After choosing a figure to attack and before Impossible Man rolls attack dice, the defending figure may choose not to defend roll defense dice against Impossible Man's attack. If the defending figure chooses not to defend roll defense dice, Impossible Man receives 1 wound.

For Shapeshifting, shouldn't he have to be adjacent to the chosen figure? How can he copy special powers just by having clear sight?

Re: The Book of Impossible Man - Design

He is just copying whatever someone else can do, he shouldn't need clear sight, its just a way to balance the power.

Wording changes made.

Re: The Book of Impossible Man - Design

OK, then maybe something other than "Shapeshifting" for the power name.

It sounds too Mystiquesque.

Re: The Book of Impossible Man - Design

Poppupian Evolution? He is shapeshifting so it fits here, I'm not sure what else to call it. I'm open to options.

Re: The Book of Impossible Man - Design

Poppupian Mimicry?

Re: The Book of Impossible Man - Design

I haven't had anything to say so far because I don't know the character. The design looks pretty fun though. The Ignored special ability definitely feels like something new. :) The life of 15 seems like a lot, but I can't say as far as the power level whether it is accurate or not.

Re: The Book of Impossible Man - Design

This guy is essentially the Marvel/Fan Four version of Mister Mxyzptlk if that helps at all. :)

Re: The Book of Impossible Man - Design

I'm aiming for a 400-450 unit. So the life will be the first to adjust.

Re: The Book of Impossible Man - Design

I'd personally prefer closer to 400 than to 450. And I wouldn't mind under 400 either. A unit can feel like an Event level annoyance without being 400+. Look at Mr. Mxy (at only 240 points)!

Re: The Book of Impossible Man - Design

Fair enough. I'll see how he feels when I start testing. Luckily, he can't steal any defensive powers since they only last for his turn.

Re: The Book of Impossible Man - Design

Calling it Mimicry is a theme fail for me. That may fit the theme of this power, but he is a shapeshifter so I think the current power name fits.

I am going to send ERB out and see what I get back since I haven't been getting much here.

I really don't know a whole lot about this guy, but it seems like you did a nice job.

To make sure he gets a better than 2 attack, he's going to want to have at least one Adventurer or Scientist in his army, as you can't count on the opponent to have one. It will be interesting to see if he's swingy. I would think he should be tested against armies that do and don't have Adventurer/Scientists in them and while having them in his army to see if the opponent concentrates on the Scientist/Adventurers in his army and leaves him alone.

Looks pretty fun!:D

Thanks for the quick reply.

David: "Welcome, C3G Heroes! I'm David, and joining me in the booth is my good friend, Bob!"

Bob: "Uh, David, I don't think I'm supposed to be here."

David: "Nonsense, Bob. I've got a private design for us to check out."

Bob: "That's the problem. You're supposed to keep these designs to yourself."

David: "Oh, I'm sure they'll understand."

Sock Puppet (appearing from behind desk): "Ready to assist!"

David: "Hey, Socks! Did you contact Mike and Pam?"

Sock Puppet: "Pam will be along shortly. Mike and I were arguing over a story we found in the news. Someone pulled a nasty April Fool's prank by putting Super Glue on a toilet seat at Wal Mart. A poor guy got stuck. Mike bet me $100 that you couldn't get stuck like that. So he smeared some Super Glue on his toilet, sat down, and he now owes me 100 bucks!"

Bob (burying face in hands): "Oh, brother."

Pam (entering): "I just made it out of the woods in a record 14 days! Where's Mike?"

David: "He's a little occupied at the moment. Anyway, let's check out this cool event hero! And don't forget, this ERB is sponsored by the good folks at Burt's Beer. Burt's Beer: The beer that's stuck in the Design Phase."

IAmBatman (enters with arms crossed)

Sock Puppet: "Ready to un-assist!" (disappears)

Bob: "I think I'm going to see if I can help Mike." (leaves)

Pam (spotting IAmBatman's Utility Belt): "Omigosh! Where did you get that? Please, oh please, tell me you're not married!"

IAmBatman: "Sorry, I'm happily married."

Pam (starts sobbing and leaves)

IAmBatman (shakes Batarang at David and exits)

David: "Wow! I haven't seen anyone clear a room like that since I was at Taco Bell!"

Impossible Man

Oooo, another Event Hero. Tough defense, but puny attack. Looks like he'll be annoying, for sure (in a fun way).

Poppupian Pop

Try saying that 3 times real fast. Nothing too complicated about this.

Poppupian Shapeshifting

This effect only lasts during Impossible Man's turn. That means Impossible Man won't get any defensive abilities such as She Hulk's Hard Body. I'm fine with that.

This will have to be checked against the Scientists and Adventurers. I immediately checked Mr. Fantastic to see if Impossible Man could use Fantastic Leader 4. Fantastic Leader's d20 roll takes place before taking a turn, but Shapeshifting states that Impossible Man can use the powers during Impossible Man's turn. So I'm guessing Impossible Man can't use Fantastic Leader. I'm wondering if others would pick up on that (assuming I'm correct about this, which I'm often not).

Ignored

This is really cool. I'm considering how this works against figures who have defensive abilities such as Batman's Evasive Strike 15. Batman has to decide before I-Man rolls attack dice. So let's say Batman decides not to roll defense dice to deliver 1 wound on I-Man. Now I-Man rolls one skull. I'm assuming Batman would still get to roll the 20-sided die. If 1-14, Batman doesn't roll defense dice per his choice and takes a wound from the skull. If 15+, Batman takes no damage, and I-Man takes another wound from Evasive Strike. Based on this walk-through, I'm thinking that figures with abilities that allow them to bypass rolling defense dice could still hit I-Man 1 wound with Ignored.

I'm also thinking this would apply with Special Attacks as well, such as if Shapeshifting Flash's Fist Fusillade (this would actually be a dumb move on I-Man's part, but I'm considering the possibilities).

Final Thoughts

Shapeshifting is a far more confined version of Mystic Power Drain, so there aren't as may figures you have to consider. I haven't gone through all of the Adventurers/Scientists, nor have I gone through all of the figures with defensive abilities that could interact with Ignored.

Most defensive powers like Batman's are "After rolling defense dice..." with Ignored you are pretty much committing to take a wound for every skull Impossible Man rolls.

Thank you for a thought provoking ERB responce,
Tickle Pickle, who thinks 4 attacks of 3 is better than 1 attack of 2 any day, even if I take 4 wounds.
