Glyph Bio - Knowledge is power. When forced to operate outside the law, knowledge can be hard to come by. A vigilante can always strike first by getting it directly from the source - the local law enforcement personnel!

  • Q: Can I use special movement abilities like Flying, Bat-Grapple 3 or Sandman's Sandstorm during my free movement for Police Scanner?
  • A: Yes and no. Flying modifies normal movement, so it can be used during the free movement. However, powers like Sandstorm, Swing Line, and Bat-Grapple explicitly say "instead of moving normally" so they can't be used with the free movement, which is considered a "normal move."

GLYPH OF UTILITY: POLICE SCANNER
(Reactionary Movement)

EQUIPMENT GLYPH
Any time an Order Marker is revealed on a Lawman Army Card, you may immediately move this figure up to 4 spaces. When this figure starts to move with this special power, it will take any leaving engagement attacks.

Cool. This one can help both the teammates of a Lawman or an opponent of an army with Lawman. Can be really interesting if there are lots of Lawmen revealing OMs, the glyph carrier is going to get lots of free movements. Sandman will be Sandstorming like a fiend.

Sandman will be Sandstorming like a fiend.

Interesting that you bring that up, would he be allowed to do that with this Glyph?

I would think so. I mean if Superman could fly those 4 spaces with this glyph, why can't Sandman use Sandstorm with it? Flying is a special power just like Sandstorm, though he can wound figures he moves over. Same thing for Archangel and his Razorwing Slash. Or [redacted], if if a friendly figure is adjacent to him when a OM for a Lawman is revealed, [redacted] and his Passenger get to move 4 spaces.

Flying modifies "normal movement", where Sand Storm, Swing Line, and Bat-Grapple powers explicitly say "instead of moving normally".

When a power like this gives movement, it is giving normal movement, and the official FAQ is that the figure cannot swap that Normal Movement out for a special move, because the (this) power is expressly allowing it to move "normally".

That's what I thought was the case. Glad you could clear that up for us Griff.

I think I'm going to reword this into an FAQ just to head this one off at the pass ... :) How's this look?

FAQ added. I'm about to send this out to ERB and hopefully can do some testing tonight!

Go, Commissioner Gordon! Also, this works with squads such as Science Police and the 5th Precinct Beat Cops. The move is tied to the Order Marker and not the figures themselves, so squads and bonding effects don't break this design.

This seems to work when your opponent has a Lawman as well. That seems thematic.

I love the way this works, as well as the theme it represents. I know Green Arrow and Black Canary wish they had this in that Star City Bank scenario I played last night.

C3G STANDARD PLAYTEST FEEDBACK FORM

NAME OF THE TEST UNIT (GLYPH OF UTILITY: POLICE SCANNER/BAT SHURIKEN)

- THEME TEST/ Check to see if there are any powers or stats on the test unit card that does not accurately reflect the theme or likeness of what the character would and could do. Also consider destructible objects, and whether or not this characters powers should affect them.
PASS

- MIRROR TEST/ Check to see if the unit were played against itself, if there would be any loops that would upset the balance of the Game.
PASS

- BONDING TEST/ Compare the unit card with all possible currently existing Bonding abilities to make sure there are no continual Bonding possibilities that do not stop appropriately or do not stop at all. This is to prevent loops in Bonding.
PASS

- SYNERGIES TEST/ Compare the unit card with all possible currently existing synergies to make sure there are no factors that could break the game by making any unit to powerful or too weak.
PASS

- POWER CHECK/ Consider the test unit and all existing units and all glyphs to compare to and check for any powers that could be over amplified and break the game. Each power must define when it takes place, who or what it affects, and What are the stipulations on the power if there are any.
PASS

- FUN TEST/ Consider whether or not the design was fun to play.
PASS

- FUN COMPETITIVE TEST/ Consider whether or not the design was fun to play against.
PASS

- DRAFTING TEST/ Consider whether or not this design is worth drafting.
PASS

- USAGE TEST/ Consider whether or not all of the powers on this card were used or at least usable.
PASS

- STRATEGY TEST/ Consider whether or not the design offers any real strategy or interesting tactics to the overall game.

Army Test
- Does it pass, Yes or No? Yes

- What should be the unit's point value? N/A
- Give a brief overview. Poor Evasive Strike rolls from Batman and superior bonding by the criminals won the day for the bad guys.
Map: Custom (2 of each glyph were placed about halfway between the startzones and the center of the map).
Units: Batman (200), Robin (100), Beat Cops x4 (260), Code: Blue Officer x2 (140) (700) vs. Hood (180), Scarecrow (140), Street Thugs x4 (280), Black Mask (100) (700)
Spoiler Alert!

Army Test
- Does it pass, Yes or No? Yes

- What should be the unit's point value? N/A
- Give a brief overview. Police Scanners let the Lawmen bunch together, but they lacked offensive punch. Batman used the Shurikens well to trim the horde, but not that much better than he could have used his special attack.
Map: Custom (two glyphs randomly placed near each startzone).
Units: Batman (200), Wonder Man (350), Zauriel (320), Robin (120) (990) vs. Hawkmen of Thanagar x2 (200), Commissioner Gordon (90), Jonah Hex (130), Captain Marvel (Mar-Vell) (400), Huntress (170) (990)
Spoiler Alert!

Re: The Book of Glyph of Utility: Police Scanner - Design

One army test down, one to go!

Re: The Book of Glyph of Utility: Police Scanner - Design

Ditto with what I said in Shuriken thread. :D

Re: The Book of Glyph of Utility: Police Scanner - Design

Tests done, 24 hours on the clock!

Re: The Book of Glyph of Utility: Police Scanner - Design

Looks good to me. Pre-Yea for both Glyphs.

Re: The Book of Glyph of Utility: Police Scanner - Design

Pre-Yea

Re: The Book of Glyph of Utility: Police Scanner - Design

Pre-me a Pre-yea. :)

Re: The Book of Glyph of Utility: Police Scanner - Design

I propose we move this to playtesting!

Re: The Book of Glyph of Utility: Police Scanner - Design

Assuming Hahma was pre-yeaing both of them ... which feels safe knowing Hahma, this passes to playtesting! I'll alert quozl, ASAP.

Re: The Book of Glyph of Utility: Police Scanner - Playtesti

Re: the theme fail - before starting work on the Bat Shuriken, we heroes decided that we were OK with glyphs having some thematically wonky results and that a lot of our preexisting glyphs do so already. So I'm not concerned about that. The Adamantium Claws combination (amongst others) was considered and disregarded as not an issue before we got started.

Re: the proposed changes - as I mentioned in an earlier email, taking the restrictions off the triple attack aspect is a no-no due to the wonkiness that can happen if you let any card have a triple attack stacking with other powers (like double attack, for instance) that modify their normal attacks. That part is staying as Driven Vigilantes only.

That said, I never found the glyph all that worth picking up for most units and I agree that a bump to an attack of 3 would be worthwhile (and not at all broken).

Thanks for the tests!

?Pass, although there's interesting stuff that goes on when adding to a normal attack with the shuriken, like when Hulk is in Rage mode

?Pass for Police Scanner. Shuriken with Admantium Claws is a theme fail at least.

- FUN TEST/ Consider whether or not the design was fun to play.
?Pass for Police Scanner, not for Shuriken. 2 attack just wasn't worth it.

I wonder if this might solve some of the shuriken's problems:

GLYPH OF UTILITY: BAT SHURIKEN
(Ranged Attacks)

EQUIPMENT GLYPH
When this figure attacks with a normal attack, you may change the Range number on its Army Card to 5 and the Attack number on its Army Card to 3. If you do, you may not use any special powers on this figure's army card for this attack. After attacking normally with this Equipment Glyph, this figure may attack 2 additional times with this Equipment Glyph.

Re: The Book of Glyph of Utility: Police Scanner - Playtesti

OK, no issues here. I propose we move to final editing.
