The figure used for this unit is a HeroClix figure from the Undead set.
Its model number and name is #003 / Skeleton and #012 / Skeleton Champion.

Character Bio - Niffleheim is a cold and barren place, and in it lies Hel, the resting place for the dead from across the Nine Realms. While it is not merely a place of torment and depravity, its ruler Hela is no doubt a cruel and petty goddess. Under her command are countless draugr, the restless dead of Norse myth. A draugr has all the might of the Asgardian it once was, but none of the memory, and makes for a useful puppet in any war against the living.

  • As an Undead, Draugr Thrall has these Undead Synergies.
  • As a Thrall, Draugr Thrall has these Thrall Synergies.
  • As a figure with the Super Strength special power, Draugr Thrall has these Super Strength Synergies.

Immunities, Benefits, and Weaknesses:
_________________________________________________________________

-Strategy, Tactics and Tips-
  • When a Draugr Thrall is destroyed, you must place its figure on the card of a Hell Lord, which changes their interactions with units like Ghost Rider. In addition, some Hell Lords like Hela or Pluto can use previously destroyed figures as a resource.

Re: The Book of Draugr Thrall (Design Phase)

NAME = DRAUGR THRALL

SPECIES = UNDEAD
UNIQUENESS = UNCOMMON HERO
CLASS = THRALL
PERSONALITY = SUBSERVIENT

SIZE/HEIGHT = MEDIUM 5

LIFE = 3

MOVE = 5
RANGE = 1

LEGION OF THE LOST

After revealing an Order Marker on this card and instead of taking a turn normally with this Draugr Thrall, if all your revealed Order Markers are on the Army Cards of Thralls, you may take a turn with any two Draugr Thralls you control. You may not take a turn with any other figures you control.

UNHALLOWED RANKS
If this Dragur Thrall is adjacent to at least one Hell Lord or Thrall you control, add 1 to this Draugr Thrall's Attack and Defense numbers.

ETERNAL BONDAGE
When this Draugr Thrall is destroyed, you must place this figure on the Army Card of a Hell Lord, if possible.

SUPER STRENGTH

Re: The Book of Draugr Thrall (Design Phase)

I think these guys are pretty much good to go after recent workshopping. I went with Subservient for class. We also have Servile, which is kind of a redundant class, but I don't think it works as well here.

For miniature, the current ones listed actually have slightly different color schemes, but I figure I'd put both anyways.

Unfortunately they both run $3-6 apiece, which is a bit pricier than ideal for a generic unit like this. Of course we can always proxy with other skeletons, but if anyone has a cheaper "skeleton with vaguely Norse looking weapons/armor" laying around that'd work, too!

Re: The Book of Draugr Thrall (Design Phase)

Nice!

That skeleton does have a pretty perfect look for this.

Re: The Book of Draugr Thrall (Design Phase)

More cannon fodder is always cool. :) Any early thoughts on Wave Planning fit for these guys?

Re: The Book of Draugr Thrall (Design Phase)

Probably alongside Hela, right? Might be nice to have another 'support unit' type figure in that release so that you could bundle a couple together and they wouldn't look as out-of-place, but I think right next to Hela on the calendar would be ideal.

Ordered a couple of those skeleton minis so I can provide photos if need be.

Re: The Book of Draugr Thrall (Design Phase)

A little odd with the current SSE title on that, but I can dig it. :up:

Re: The Book of Draugr Thrall (Design Phase)

I'm surprised Heroclix has an Undead set. I would have thought it old Horrorclix material. :ponder: The minis look great either way, despite their price. People will find cheaper options for anything so I think we should go with those guys for this design.

The design looks pretty good and I am happy to see more Undead things. My only concern is attack. Are these guys really that strong to be swinging 5 or 6 dice all the time?

Re: The Book of Draugr Thrall (Design Phase)

Yeah, alongside Hela if at all possible. We can shuffle around our October-November stuff as needed since there's a lot of overlap between "horror" and "magic" and "sword-and-sorcery ladies."

Attack power is based on the idea that they're Asgardian Warriors (which have 5A/5D base stats), but dead, so their defense is a lot lower. I wouldn't mind ticking them down if needed to hit a good price point but I do like the symmetry.

Heroclix did one Undead set a year or two back. Definitely felt like kind of a callback to Horrorclix, but more under the Heroclix brand. Not sure it was too financially successful, because they haven't returned to it since. (Though maybe they just haven't really felt the need to, since they've picked up a few more licenses)

Re: The Book of Draugr Thrall (Design Phase)

If they are Asgardians, that definitely justifies the stats.

Re: The Book of Draugr Thrall (Design Phase)

A bit expensive for cannon fodder at 125. Any chance of lowering the points to make them more like cannon fodder?

Re: The Book of Draugr Thrall (Design Phase)

I could see dropping them a bit, but under 100 would feel unthematic here. These guys should feel like a threat to Thor and an Asgardian army - we already have a lot of "swarmy" zombie types, so I like them in a middle tier position.

Re: The Book of Draugr Thrall (Design Phase)

1400 points gets you Hela and 7 of them, which seems like a nice little army to take on a pack of Asgardian heroes with.

Re: The Book of Draugr Thrall (Design Phase)

I kind of feel like they should have 3 life and more defense, since Hela summons Thralls with 3 life.

Re: The Book of Draugr Thrall (Design Phase)

I can see the logic there. I went with a "takes a licking, keeps on ticking" type of undead but I think "one good hit and they fall apart" is equally valid, particularly considering the sculpts. Could keep their cost down too. Any other preferences there?

Re: The Book of Draugr Thrall (Design Phase)

Takes a licking and keeps on ticking = zombie for me. One good hit and they fall apart = skeleton for me.

Re: The Book of Draugr Thrall (Design Phase)

I sort of like idea of theit Life matching the 3 Life of the Thralls Hela creates.
3 is not terrible with a decent defense.

Re: The Book of Draugr Thrall (Design Phase)

I love the idea here, but Hela can only resurrect once per game, right? In which case these guys probably won't be the top choice for that unless it's the only option. I'd love for her to be able to summon more somehow.

Re: The Book of Draugr Thrall (Design Phase)

I doubt she would resurrect them unless she has no other options available, but if she does then at least they would be at full strength rather then 1/2 strength, it's just the theme of all Thrall's in play having the same starting life that appeals to me.

Re: The Book of Draugr Thrall (Design Phase)

So while I originally was leaning toward the high life low defense, I think if we're focusing in on skeletons here, I agree with Bats that lower life reflects their "brittleness." And I don't mind the symmetry as a bonus. So I'll switch to the following stats:

LIFE = 3

MOVE = 5
RANGE = 1
ATTACK = 5
DEFENSE = 5

Which I think should drop them a little bit closer to 100? If we pin them at 95 it gets Hela + Draugr x5 at an even 1000, and that's exactly 50% of an Asgardian Warrior. Which, yeah, I know it doesn't really scale like that, but I think it's a decent goal at least. :p

Anyone with a strong preference for the 6 Life/2 Defense version want to chime in?

Re: The Book of Draugr Thrall (Design Phase)

Those stats plus Super Strength gets you 80 points on the calculator. From there, it depends on how much you think the stats are worth. 100 might be a bit low, but you could start testing there.

Re: The Book of Draugr Thrall (Design Phase)

Stats adjusted, set at 105 for testing. I'll go through the checklists soon-ish - moving soon, so I probably won't have time for testing until June anyways.

Re: The Book of Draugr Thrall (Design Phase)

Competitive Concerns

Does the design offer worrisome Order marker movement or efficiency (Commander Rogers, Joker (I), Ozymandias)? - N/A

Does the design offer superior Auto wounding (War Machine, Cosmic Cube, Selene)? - N/A

Does the design cause the prevention of abilities (Blob, Polaris, Meteorite)? - N/A

Does the design move opponent's figures (Graviton, Magneto (II), Vulture)? - N/A

Does the design move friendly figures (Angel, Martian Manhunter (I))? - N/A

Does the design boost other figures (outside of a narrowly defined set) (Captain America, Star-Lord, Sage)? - N/A

Does the design have one or more excellent defensive powers (5th Precinct Beat Cops, Magical Defense, Speedball)? - N/A

Does the design auto destroy or take control of other figures in a way that unbalances the design (Psycho-man, Gorgon, Enchantress)? - N/A

Does the design have any other concerns (Magma creating lava tiles, pre re-eval Crow's invulnerability, pre re-eval Mad Thinker Mind Games and limiting design space for Androids)? - N/A

Summary of Any Competitive Concerns/Suggestions for Changes - None

Outside of very narrow Hell Lord synergy, these guys are 100% receivers for synergy.

Consistency Concerns

Name and Identity
Verify character is named in a way that is clear, accurate and feels consistent with the way other characters are named. - :up:

Uniqueness and Type
Verify that the power text reflects the listed uniqueness and type, that the uniqueness fits the character, and that squad size is listed for squads. - :up:

Left Box
If the character's species, class or personality is reused, verify that the character feels thematically consistent with other figures that have that species, class or personality. If they are not reused, verify that there is no pre-existing species, class or personality that would make more sense. - :up:

Size and Height
Verify that the listed size and height are accurate. Standing the mini up next to a stack of tiles, and a few other minis of various sizes, is encouraged. - Don't have the mini yet, but eyeballing pictures they seem Medium 5.

Super Strength and Flying
Verify that these special powers are present if they make sense, and not if they don't. - :up:

New Powers - Names
Verify that any new powers are not using power names identical to, or very similar to, pre-existing powers. Verify that any new powers are actually new and not old powers with new names. - All new, but as I think of it, these guys aren't necessarily "damned," which is very Judeo-Christian. I'll go with "LEGION OF THE LOST" for the first power name.

New Powers - Effects
Verify that the effect and timing of all new powers is clear. Verify that any logical immunities, benefits, or weaknesses (whether those be necessary for thematic or mechanical reasons) are implemented: consider whether defensive powers that work against normal attacks should also work against special attacks, whether or not a power has an elemental component that some figures should resist, and whether or not unliving figures (such as Undead and Androids) should be affected. - :up:

Reused Powers
Verify that the design is reusing powers in place of creating new ones, where reused powers could implement the same theme and mechanics with no differences or only trivial differences. Verify that any reused powers have the correct text. - N/A

Power Level
Verify that the character's movement, attack, range, and defense (in conjunction with any special powers that enhance those stats) feel consistent with the capabilities of characters with analogous powers and abilities. Verify that the character falls into a similar point range to characters with comparative powers and abilities. - Same as Asgardian Warriors, but half the life and slightly slower.

Other than a name tweak, think we're good to go. I believe Ronin mentioned he's picking up the mini, so I'll try to remember to confirm height during Final Editing.

Still another couple of weeks until I can get to them, but I figured while I have a minute...
